Shypaw had healed from her wounds, and was able to start training again. Deerpaw trotted happily through the snow-covered pine forest, excited to train with the she-cat. Shypaw had been an apprentice far longer than she, and had Murkystar as her mentor. Deerpaw hoped that Shypaw would teach her one or two things.

"Swiftheart said we should be sparring! This clearing looks good. Hold on while I clear some of the nettles away," She announced, leaping forward and pushing the fallen nettles to the side of the clearing. "Done! Who starts?" Deerpaw turned to Shypaw, her tabby tail waving like a tall reed in the wind.

Shypaw trotted beside Deerpaw through the glistening white pine forest. Above the apprentices in the night sky the moon was beginning to descend. It was almost full and had been good hunting for the small white she-cat. She had returned to the thorn hollow with rats, a nest of mice, and a few common herbs. With all the warriors injured, the apprentices were sorely needed. When the young cats weren't hunting for food and herbs, they were sharpening their battle moves. So when Swiftheart and Murkystar took the two snowy-furred apprentices out, Shypaw had blinked the weariness from her silvery eyes and shook the tiredness from her little white paws.

Deerpaw stopped in a clearing in the pine grove, and Shypaw helped sweep away the frozen needles. Deerpaw was only a little younger than Shypaw but looked at her watchful and eager which made her ears heat pink. Shypaw gestured encouragingly to Deerpaw, mewing quietly, "You can start." Shypaw took up a battle stance and circled the clearing, silver eyes on Deerpaw's amber, quiet excitement flickering between them. As she moved the little white she-cat seemed to almost disappear among the snow and moonbeams.

Deerpaw dropped into a crouch and narrowed her eyes at Shypaw. when she was so still that even she herself was thinking that she was made of stone, she suddenly lunged out and barreled the white she-cat over, their pelt clashing together to form a ball of white.

Swiftheart sat a distance away but kept a close eye on the apprentices. She wanted to see their progress and how each of them would handle this practice spar, it was important to sharpen their skills... in case the forgotten order was ever to return she hoped they would not but it was better to be prepared. She sat silently not interrupting at all her white pelt matched the two apprentices and the 3 of them were invisible to the rest of the world with the snowy backdrop... she watched the two circle tensly.

Her apprentice made the first move with a strike.

Shypaw saw the look change in the other apprentice's eyes before Deerpaw leapt and nimbly dodged the strike of her outstretched paws, the two tumbling harmlessly in a ball of white.

Deerpaw groaned in frustration as her paws landed on snow instead of warm fur. Of course Murkystar would have taught her apprentice to dodge moves. Catching a chance at an opening, Deerpaw ran and yanked the white she-cat’s tail, though she was careful not to draw blood.

Deerpaw saw the blur of white and dodged it quickly before even knowing what had happened. She threw out another paw to catch Shypaw off balance. Instead, her paw brushed against air. This was a move the apprentice never mastered before. She made a mental note to practice it later.

Shypaw's strike connected with nothing but air, and she felt the soft brush of Deerpaw's retaliating strike miss her. Shypaw panted little white clouds of breath, her whole body warm even in the snow and ice. Her silvery eyes burned with determination. As Deerpaw's paw flew past, the sleek quick she-cat's belly was exposed. With all her strength Shypaw rushed in.

Deerpaw felt Shypaw's paws slam at her belly repeatedly. of course, she should never have exposed her belly. that was rule one: watch your tail, neck and paws. keep out of your enemy's range. paws scratch, fangs kill. those were such simple rules and yet she couldn't follow them. what use was she?

she glared at the white apprentice, her amber eyes flashing. it was rare to see Deerpaw in such a rage, but all that blaming, patrolling and sleepless nights were starting to take their effect. she darted past the older apprentice, using her sleek fur to slip under her belly and clamp her jaws around the waving white tail. she yanked as hard as she could, feeling Shypaw collapse from the sudden attack. she darted out from under the apprentice just as she fell to the ground.

Deerpaw's amber eyes flashed with rage at Shypaw, and her silvery eyes widened in concern and confusion, white tail waving in uncertainty behind her. She'd been careful not to truly hurt the other apprentice... hadn't she? Shypaw paused, and Deerpaw darted past her, slipping under her, jaws clamping down on Shypaw's waving white tail. She felt blood begin to well and Deerpaw yanked, pulling the tiny white apprentice off her paws. Shypaw collapsed from the sudden attack, falling to the snowy ground as Deerpaw darted out from under her.

Deerpaw's eyes widened as she realized she had drawn blood. guilt churned in her belly as she watched the lump of white fur on the frozen ground, trying to catch their breath and get back to their paws. it's just a spaw. it's just a spar. she reminded herself, and yet she couldn't bring herself to deal any heavy damage. she could almost imagine the red clotting the white fur and pooling over her paws. trembling, she gently cuffed Shypaw's flank.
