Lightningkit’s Apprentice Ceremony

Another of Goldenfang’s kits was being named an apprentice. Lightningkit, so named for the pale orange streaks in his cloudy gray fur, had been neatly groomed before the deputy took her place beneath the Tallrock. ”Let all cats old enough to run the moor gather under the Tallrock for a Clan meeting!”

When the dust had settled and everyone but the wind was silent, Goldenfang co to use her announcement with the formal words every mother was pleased to hear: “Lightningkit, step forward.” The timid tomkit did as he was told, yellow-green eyes still cast down. He was afraid to look. Afraid to see what he had to live up to.

“Lightningkit, you have reached the age of six moons and are ready to begin your training. From this day until you earn your warrior name, you shall be called Lightningpaw. Daystar will be your mentor.”

Oh, stars. Daystar as his mentor! He was both excited and terrified. What if he failed? But what if he succeeded? Lightningpaw carefully approached the leader with his nose raised hopefully towards her. What was meant to happen would happen. There was no shying away now.
