Shypaw padded with the patrol along the eastern edge of ShadowClan's territory which bordered the Twolegplace. It was a cold, cloudy night, the moon a dim glimmer overhead. Shypaw's fur was fluffed against the chill, her posture huddled. Strange lights and sounds sometimes came from over the border, or a monster rumbled past its eyes casting a glow.
Shypaw straightened when the warrior at the front stopped and addressed the patrol. She stood watching as each of the warriors dispersed in a different direction, dark pelts melting into the shadows. She scented the air for prey nearby, having been instructed not to go far.
Shypaw scented a lizard. Ears swivelling, she heard its scuffling in the leaf litter. Her narrowed silvery eyes pinpointed it and she slunk forward, paws light and quick like Murkystar had begun to teach her.
Shypaw attempted to catch a lizard, costing her -3 SP.
It was unsuccessful.
Shypaw's head shot up, eyes widening. The lizard startled and scuttled away, but she barely noticed. The cold night breeze carried the scent of a cat not from ShadowClan. She inhaled more carefully, this wasn't a cat from any Clan, it must have strayed into the marshes from Twolegplace. A warning yowl bubbled up but stuck in her throat. Shypaw's chest tightened and her heart thundered. She slunk through the shadows, her white pelt mistakable for a glimmer of moonlight.
A tabby pelt showed past a tangle of thorn bushes. The young intruder, perhaps a little older than Shypaw, wasn't aware of her yet. Her heart fluttered in terror, but the voices of her dad and her mentor sounded in her ears:
Defend your Clan. Challenge all trespassing cats. It was the sacred code. Shypaw took a deep breath and leaped in a flash of movement, pinning the tabby with unsheathed claws, her fangs bared warningly and fur on end.
