Minnowkit stretched and stared longingly at the nursery entrance. Beyond it, she could see kits playing, warriors organizing patrols, and apprentices training. Her mother, Ghosttail, was asleep. It wouldn't hurt to explore, would it? After all, the camp was safe with all the warriors and apprentices. Minnowkit stood up and went to the entrance. She took a deep breath and crept out.
In the cool breeze, Minnowkit stared at the bustling camp. There were so many noises! Birds chirping, the river murmuring, and the warriors talking. She took another step, then another, feeling more and more free each time. She sniffed at the fresh-kill pile with all its fish, then bounded over to the medicine den. She didn't enter, but could smell the herb scent wafting out of it. She looked up at the clear blue sky, feeling happier than she had felt in days.
