Sometimes, You Just Gotta Hunt [for Badger and Middy]

The morning sun was rising further in the sky. It wasn't too hot yet, which meant it was perfect for a morning hunt. So off Shrikestorm went to the edge of camp, shaking off the rust of morning slumber. A few other cats milled around, as they too clearly had the idea of getting in a hunt before it got too hot. So he ended up joining a couple of his clanmates, and off they went onto the wide expanse of the moors.

Muddyleap could barely keep still as he waited for Shrikestorm and Silverpaw to join him and his mom. It had started out simple enough - just Hayglow and him going out for a bit of fresh air and perhaps doing a bit of hunting...Only for a few other cats to show interest in joining them to his enjoyment. He couldn't deny that he was most excited to be out with Silverpaw, having not spent enough time with his younger half-sibling since he had become a warrior. "Come on, Silverpaw! I wanna see what you've been taught so far!" he meowed, tail lashing in excitement as he turned and bounded out into the territory after Shrikestorm, who had decided to be the first of the group out into the territory. "Maybe I can show you some stuff I learned as well! I wanna see you be a warrior soon!"

Hayglow let out a purr of amusement as she followed after Muddyleap, glancing between him and his half-brother. While she hadn't chosen to get that close with any of Fawnstep's children, she knew that Muddyleap rarely wasted a moment in trying to get close to those he thought of family - even for as distant Fawnstep was in his life. And while she had just been planning to go out with Muddyleap...Well, she was thankful for a few other eyes to keep track of her energetic son in case trouble reared its ugly head.

"Coming Muddy! Let's show the prey who's boss!" the energetic younger tom called out as he hurried over to his half-brother and the rest. He offered Hayglow and Shrikstorm a polite yet chipper nod before playfully bumping his shoulder to Muddyleap's. "Let's go guys! I wanna get some catches in before the sun scorches our fur off." The apprentice let out small chortle before closely following behind his half-brother's retreating figure.

Once the group stopped somewhere random in the territory, Silverpaw wasted no time in bounding off in search of his first catch but made sure to notify the rest that he'll be going back there once he feels like he's caught enough and that he won't be wandering off too far.

The gray-furred tom scented the air while keeping his eyes vigilant for any prey that might be lurking around. It didn't take long for him to spot a bird pecking at the ground. He dropped down into the hunting crouch and carefully made his way over to it. He stopped at a reasonable distance, breaths slowed and quieted to the best he could. He waited a moment to see if it had noticed him but then didn't waste anymore time after that and pounced. Birds were always hard for him so hopefully he'd be able to catch it...

Success! His first bird catch! Silverpaw grinned from ear to ear as he proudly looked down at the feathered creature. He buried it quickly and went on in search of another critter to snatch.

"Good catch, Silverpaw," Shrikestorm purred, casting his gaze out along the moors. The prey was plentiful as the weather warmed, and they forgot that they lived in constant terror each time they stepped foot outside their burrows or nests. Speaking of that... A lean but still acceptable rabbit was hopping about some distance away. Downwind, its scent hit his nostrils, and he licked his chops. Lifting his tail to signal the others' attention, he began to creep towards the rabbit, light on his paws. Then, as he got closer, he broke out into a sprint, and...

... he was just a little bit unlucky. He had a good reign on it, but the rabbit must've realized something wasn't right. Its ears went up as it squeaked, rushing off towards a burrow that was much closer than expected. Shrikestorm swiped at it, but it got right under his paw and into its burrow, where it was likely to stay for the immediately future. "Darn it," he hissed, swiping at the ground instead. Bad luck...

Muddyleap happily leapt off in his own direction as the group reached the hunting ground, scouting the horizon and open field for any trace of prey. His ear twitched as Shrikestorm praised Silverpaw, turning to look over his shoulder to see that his half-brother had managed to catch a bird. "Aw yeah, good job, Silverpaw!" he called out to his sibling only to be silenced with a glare from Hayglow. "Right, sorry, quiet while hunting," he apologized with a sheepish purr as he went back to scouting out for something to hunt. His eyes glimmered as he spotted a hare, poking away at the grass. He smiled as he dropped down into a crouch, not intimidated by the large prey as he started to lurk closer before he made his dash at the unsuspecting beast.

The hare didn't notice him until Muddyleap was pinning its down, struggling a little to hold it in place so he could kill it. One of the hare's legs lashed out but it didn't stop the warrior from lurching forward and closing his teeth around its neck. It grew still as he drew backwards with a grin, grabbing it by the scruff as he started to drag it back to where the others went.

Hayglow rolled her eyes as Muddyleap gave her a sheepish purr and turned away, shaking her head with an amused purr of her own. She knew her son only meant the best - she could be rather excitable herself but she had learned how to remain quite on a hunting trip lest you wanted to scare away prey. She padded off a little, tasting the air as she went until she located a plover. Pin-pointing its location, she dropped into her own crouch and drew forward - eyes narrowing as she judged the distance before she sprung to her paws and dashed forward as quickly as she could go toward the bird.

The plover's head snapped toward her as she dashed, her heart sinking as it quickly spread its wings and took off. She made a leap, claws barely missing the bird but it was out of range as she landed on all fours with a small thump. "Rabbit-dirt," she muttered as she watched it disappear from view, shaking her head with a huff. It wasn't fun missing prey but she knew she would always get another chance - they could do much better than a plover anyways.

Eyes lighting up at the praise, Silverpaw beamed at Shrikestorm and Muddyleap. "Thanks guys!" he said, enthusiastically yet with less volume than normal. He saw the look that Hayglow gave his half-brother and decided it was best to quiet down a bit before he got reminded as well. They were going to spook away all the prey if they became too rambunctious. The apprentice stayed there for a bit, curious to see how the other's would do. Shrike and Hay were both unlucky with their potential prey. They had been so close too! Muddy had succeeded with his hare and Silver shot him a toothy smile. "Nice one Muddyleap!" he purred before offering the other two a reassuring nod. It was bad luck. Nobody was perfect. After having watched them, the apprentice offered them all one last grin before hurrying away, eyes and ears open for anything.

After that successful catch, the apprentice's confidence was at an all time high. He put on a more serious face and got to work on tracking down any critters. After a while, he scented a hare not too far from his general vicinity. He carefully maneuvered himself and eventually reached a safe distance from the unsuspecting prey. He wiggled his haunches for a few moments, wary of revealing his presence to it, before launching at it, paws and claws ready to catch.

A great catch! The hare was in his jaws in no time. He felt giddiness bubbling up in his chest. Two in a row! He took his prey and went over to the place where they were to meet and buried it there. He then rushed over to where he'd hidden his bird and took it back there as well. He wanted them close by and not too spread apart. He wasn't sure how many they wanted to catch but he scouted out the area for more prey just in case.

Silverpaw was having quite the luck. In fact, he was doing much better than either of the warriors, much to Shrikestorm's chagrin. Well, not exactly chagrin: it was more of a friendly competition, and he wouldn't be the only one without prey to his name. So he kept prowling, kept tasting the air, and eventually came across a hare. It would seem that this one hadn't learned the same lesson as the other. Hopefully he could take advantage of that. It was much easier than the previous rabbit: the hare didn't even realize he was there until it was too late, and he was proudly returning to the others with it clamped between his jaws.
