Seize the Moment and Stay in It [closed for the mousehunt]

The night, the hour, had come.

Beecloud gazed out at the slumbering bodies of every cat in his camp and prayed for the sweet, careful touch of mercy to grace them, no matter what happened next... or what he did. He waited hesitantly at the entrance to the dirtplace to see if any cat would join him. A quarter moon had passed, after all. If there was a cat in ThunderClan that knew, they'd be coming. Sure enough, Shrikesong and Quaildock's eyes shone through the darkness. He ushered them through the back way.

Time to go.

The evening sang a war song in the caw-caws of ravens and the beating of bats' wings. In all the time they took to choose the path that offered the most seclusion and the least sound, the three spoke not a word to each other. And, oddly, Beecloud's heart did not crackle and spark like the lightning rod he had been in these past moons. No, there was resolution interred in his very bones. A sense of completeness unlocked in his chest the strange new ability to stay entirely calm without ever having to convince himself of it. All prior infractions and missteps he had taken in devising this crusade were melting away around him, pitching his vision into fuzzy nothingness, leaving everything meaningless except the end. Finality seemed to be a running theme lately, for better or for worse.

The thunderpath was teeming with activity. The flash-and-bang motion of roaring, devilish monsters set the scene of their rendezvous. Though ThunderClan was the first to arrive, soon, many warriors were gathering to attend their modest strategy meeting. Beecloud lay in the grass, half in snow, his fur rolling out from his scruff like a lion's mane. He was as sap became amber, as nectar became honey. He flicked his tail to reign the warriors in closer. "So this," he whispered beneath the crashing of a small monster, "Is our Mousehunt. It's exactly the way I pictured it. Thank you all. ShadowClan, I hope you didn't have too much trouble sneaking out. If all goes well, when you return, you won't have to worry about being jailed for patrolling without an escort. There'll be no jail to send you to."

Despite the tension, Beecloud had no trouble allowing a smile to bloom on his large-fanged face. He couldn't be happier or more proud or more relieved. He was bubbling. "We have to be ready for anything that could lie ahead-"

A smell caught on the wind. It was a bad smell. He looked at the warriors nearest to him, eyes flickering, but his head did not move. Beecloud shut his mouth slowly. One little WindClan she-cat, it seemed, smelled it too. No.

“I WANT WINDCLAN GONE!”

It was a loud screech that stirred Roe from his slumber, taking it rather calmly as it had hardly been the first time this had happened in the last few sunrises. Once again he could see Lexine facing Theron, fur on edge and teeth bared as she growled. Her wounds had barely healed but it didn’t seem to stop her as her tail lashed. “Every single one of those cats should pay for his death! I want that Clan burned to the ground!”

This had hardly been the first time he had heard it. It had been devastating to hear about Alois’ death when she had first reported it, but as she had given more and more details on the events… He felt a pit deep in his stomach as he raised his head to look back and forth between Lexine and Theron. He...He didn’t understand. How could she not understand that… It was their fault. They had been the one to attack WindClan - that warrior had acted in self-defense. Thalia had been in the right with her actions...So why wasn’t Fawnstep?

And the worse thing was that everybody seemed to agree with Lexine. Theron had wasted no time in dispatching cats to capture Alois’ killer. Honestly, it was something else that she hadn’t agreed to Lexine’s further demands of violence. Speaking of… “I understand how you are feeling, truly, Lexine,” Theron purred back, shushing the Nightstriker with a flicker of her tail. “I’ve wanted nothing more than that since they killed my previous pack. But Eris wants them to remain and I’m not about to question orders.”

Even Theron’s feelings, which Roe had tried to defend to WindClan...He was starting to grasp the reality of this entire situation and it sickened him, if only because he couldn’t say a word. He raised a paw to his mouth, feeling the four scratch marks - perhaps scars by now - that ran down his muzzle. He hadn’t dared try to open his mouth since he had received them as punishment for speaking out of turn...He was only lucky that they had learned after he had told all the kits - when there were too many to silence one way or another. And then he was stuck here, ordered to never leave Theron’s side.

And while once he would have preferred it - enjoying the way they were like family… He was starting to grow sick of that as well. She kept trying to defend the wounds that were placed on him, that it was just a reminder for him to stay in place when he had done nothing wrong! And he truly believed that she believed every word that she said. That she did love him but...He wasn’t about to allow himself to be blinded by that again.

His ears twitched as he glanced around, before he paused. Lexine hadn’t taken Theron brushing off her demands well, still screaming for further bloodshed against WindClan as a whole for killing her brother...And every eye was on the two. Slowly, he pushed himself to his paws as he slipped into the shadows and away from the encampment. He wasn’t fleeing - there would be no escape. When Theron noticed, she would send cats after him and there was no escape. But...He needed to get away from that for only a small bit. He would suffer any punishment that followed this as long as he could have a break.

But knowing that he couldn’t get away didn’t stop him from going far. He trekked toward the Asylum camp, hurrying as fast as he could. He had heard whispers of cats being called together before the Captains and Eris - at first, he hadn’t paid much mind to it but once he had put together who they were… Perhaps if he was lucky, he would find Thalia - if she was coming from the Asylum camp, that was. He could warn her away - convince her not to… He didn’t know what they had planned - he only hoped it wouldn’t be the same as his punishment.

He barely slowed down even as he moved from grass to the Thunderpath - shifting to stay well out of the way if any of those dreadful creatures chose to choose. His paws thumped against the grass as he ran - eyes focused on the horizon. That was, however, until a yowl caught his ear.


“A-Asylum!”

He blinked, barely having time to realize the words before paws thumped into his side, the surprise of the attack sending him to the ground. His eyes widened as he flattened himself to the ground, ears slicked back as he cowered. He didn’t want to fight - he just wanted to get away...And was surprised when the paws released him. “B-Beecloud! What do we do…? I don’t want to…”

The voice was timid and soft - but familiar. Roe’s eyes tried to focus on the moon-lit form that turned its wide green eyes onto him as he tasted the air. She was...WindClan - but he also smelled all the other Clans, fresh. What was…? He tried to look around, make out other shapes but his attention was forced back onto the she-cat as she suddenly pressed her muzzle nearly into his. “...What...Happened to your muzzle? Those scars look…Fresh.” There was another pause before she straightened up with a gasp. “Roe! You are Roe, right? I-I remember, you were with Theron when she...A-And with that other Asylum lady whenever you visited previously and…”

There was a long pause before she glanced over her shoulder. “...This one is hurt - the scars look fresh, I think. I don’t...I don’t know if he is a bad one. Do you want to talk to him, Beecloud?”

Zinnia and Hayglow had made their daring escape (it had been interesting, in that she tended not to use the tunnels beneath WindClan's territory, but they had been an essential asset in this endeavor), and they stood now with the rest of the Mousehunt. Tonight they would see justice served, and reclaim what was stolen - that which could still be saved, at least.

She listened close as Beecloud spoke, but an interruption soon came in the form of an Asylum intruder. She was prepared for the assault, readying a battle stance, but - it seemed that it wasn't one. Indeed, one of the few Asylum cats she could call by name was before them. Roe, who wasn't moving to attack. There were scars on his muzzle, and he wasn't speaking...

What had happened?

(Why was he here?)

Mistyfalcon slipped from the warrior den, using the hole in the back that he and Brighteye had once used on their midnight runs. Those runs had been a way to relax, something tranquil. Tonight, it was anything but. He crept through the pines in grim silence, sticking to the shadows of the trees. At least his dark fur helped him blend in, as it did for Ebonysong who stalked silently at his side.

Mistyfalcon carefully led the pair towards the thunderpath, paws silent as they crept along. It wasn't long before the acrid stench made his whiskers twitch, and not much longer still than the dark path was in sight.

Soon enough they came upon the others, though Mistyfalcon's lean frame remained tense.

"Beecloud." Voice quiet, Mistyfalcon gave the Thunderclanner a brisk nod in greeting. "They will never learn to stalk the shadows like we do." The briefest flicker of humor in his voice, there and gone again. Hopefully they would no longer have to skulk around their own territory in fear.

He longed for the day that he would not have to place every paw so carefully, longed for the day where his every move wasn't scrutinized by outsiders in their territory. They all did. This was why they were here. To take back what was theirs, to cripple the Asylum. For their clans, for their families, there was no other way.

Mistyfalcon froze at the sudden scent, whiskers trembling ever-so-slightly as he slipped silently to stand next to Beecloud. He was smaller than the huge Thunderclan tom... And carefully aligned his body so that the other warrior's shadow obscured his sleeker frame. He was ready to attack if needed, ready to defend once the need to do so arose.

Voices. Mistyfalcon listened in silence, body poised for the first sign of trouble. For the moment none came, though he eyed the clearly-Asylum intruder with grim suspicion. Scars across his muzzle, and he made no move to attack. Still, Mistyfalcon did not relax his stance as he stood in Beecloud's shadow.

The silvery earth, bathed in the somber and desolate hues of a winter-bleak forest, passed in a featureless stream of constant motion, whirling by against the mechanically focused peripheral concerns of Jayshriek's night-sharped vision. Though the late hour and the bone-chilling bite to the plummeting temperatures reigned heavily against the bleak crest of the wilting forest, it was as though the night was alive with a rancorous symphony of war-like melodies- the perpetual hiss of a frigid gale curling past his racing shape, the clatter of barren branches whipping against their intricately-tangled neighbors, the shrill caws of idling birds high above. It seemed as though the earth itself was aware of the awaiting transgressions, a knowing undercurrent of energy stirring through all beings which resided in the forest, a knowing undercurrent of energy that had kept his quick pace from slackening despite the distance of his quiet run.

Aware enough to lend strength and speed, yet no additional courage. Even in those final heartbeats before slipping away into the deep shadows of the darkness, Jayshriek had found himself unable to do anything but linger just a pace or so before Ivystar's den, unwitting mother drifting off to dreams without any inclination of what was about to come. It was difficult to stare down the judging eyes of finality and mortality, an insurmountable task dwarfing all of the little mistakes and grievances wedged low and stubborn in the heart.  He wanted to do more than hesitate outside of her den for one final moment, but perhaps he was simply too similar in blood and bone- too scared of inflicting any more damage than necessary.

He was truly his mother's son.

The frost-stiffen bank of snow trembled faintly under the fierce roar of thundering along monsters, the hushed whispers of terse conversation just barely palpable under all the intense background noise, the sharp stench of metal and death making the environment all the more overwhelming. It took several moments for the bustling creatures of death and destruction to slow for long enough that Jayshriek could safely approach without fear of losing his sight due to their terribly intense gleam of their pallid gaze, but his intending-to-be-discrete approach was disrupted by the shrill cries of alarm sounded by those already gathered. Returning pace to the brisk trot he had previously adopted on the race here, the dark-furred RiverClanner cast a carefully disinterested gaze at the spectacle of several other Clan cats loosely strung about, reflective gazes all trained upon the wounded Asylum cat currently caught within their teeth. "It's a bit early for things to be straying from the intended plan, no?" Jayshriek eventually wreathed out, smoky rasp of his low voice resonating hard and low against the terse night air.

The cold light of the near-full moon engulfed Shrikesong as she followed Beecloud out of ThunderClan camp. Ever since she had first seen them, she couldn't bear them. She wanted to get rid of them from the minute they stepped into ThunderClan territory. And it was obvious by the numerous cats who gathered here that they felt the same. But for her, it was a little different. She didn't just want them gone, she wanted them to suffer as they crumbled, to turn into dust while the Clans stayed strong. It wasn't like her to think like that. But her hatred had twisted her into a bitter she-cat, one that she kept under a cheerful facade, but one that was always lingering in her mind.

Despite anybody who looked at her, she wasn't the same Shrikesong she once was. Most of her clanmates saw a face that didn't talk for about a moon, constantly going on solo patrols and bringing back fish for some reason. It was because by those long, time-consuming days by the river, she learned how to recognize her own emotions, and how to portray emotions differently to what she was actually feeling. With this new talent in place, she was able to converse with many Asylum cats, and even had a conversation with the Asylum Head, Eris. With every step, she knew that she needed to burn Asylum to the ground.

Whatever happened next, well, she would cross that bridge when she got there.

Noticing an Asylum Nightstriker near the Thunderpath, the brown she-cat narrowed her eyes. She would have spoken up, but a WindClan she-cat spoke first. An Asylum cat? I'm not working with him, the emotional part of her mind scoffed. But we could use the help, the logical side of her mind retorted.

He will just betray us for the Asylum.

Look at the scars on his muzzle. Those aren't normal Nightstriker scars. It looks like someone slashed him there. And look at his face. Does he look like the kind of cat who would betray us for the Asylum?

I mean, looks can be deceiving.

Like Dawnhawk? He gave me bad vibes, no matter how harmless he looked.

No! Dawnhawk has nothing to do with this! I was talking about the facade that I wore every day at almost every turn. If you're so logical, why can't you see something as logical as that?

And if you're so emotional, where is the guilt of seeing a cat harmed by the Asylum - a group that you hate, if I have to remind you - and the willingness to bring a cat like that onto the team?

Really? Every Asylum cat's the same. They're all crow-food.

Okay, you are literally blind for thinking that. You remember Griffon? He didn't seem bad like the others. Most of Asylum is crow-food, sure, but not every cat. Where did that cat who tried to see the good in everyone go?

She got hit on the head. By Asylum, obviously.

Well, you need to recover from your amnesia and think with common sense for once! I can't fathom your stubbornness in a time like this!

How about this. I will let the others decide on that Asylum cat's fate. Just don't say anything about what happened here.

Sounds like a fair deal to me.

Quaildock slipped out of camp through the dirtplace, his dark grey tabby pelt making it easy to wander off in the night. He quickly climbed up a tree, and started traversing that way. He was sure that the Asylum cats didn't how to climb trees. And if they did, surely they wouldn't search the trees first. Once he made to a few foxlengths from the meeting place, he hopped down and padded forwards... to see an injured Asylum cat, two of his clanmates, two Windclan warriors, a Riverclan warrior and the Shadowclan warrior he fought with.

He tilted his head in confusion, as he got into a defensive stance. "Whats going on here?" Quaildock asked. "Am I late?"

With the moon high in the sky, Wisteriabloom followed Jayshriek as they crept out of camp. She was surprised that the young warrior, who she didn't know very well, was also part of the mousehunt, but he seemed to be determined enough. Her paws kept moving in silence, and her eyes were glossy and distant through the darkness. Shrikefrost was gone. Killed by an Asylum cat whilst Wisteriabloom was off running around passing messages to cats outside the clans. She hadn't even been there to defend him. Only found his body out and prepared for burial when she returned to camp.

But she had no time to be upset. All that filled her was a dull determination. Destroying Asylum was the only was to protect Moonpaw and avenge her mate.

When she arrived, she scanned the group of gathered cats, I guess that's pretty much all of us, she thought. It felt big for a battle patrol, and yet still not enough. It has to work. I'll make it work. She was about to whisper a greeting to her fellow mice, but noises in the distance made her quickly snap her mouth shut. There was no point in risking revealing themselves unless this cat was going to be an ally.

Beecloud’s mouth snapped shut like an alligator as he recoiled, watching with enthralled horror as Hayglow pulled a little tom out of the bushes and asked him for direction. The mostly-white Asylum guard was without the disguise of his pelt, and it seemed that he hailed from WindClan’s camp by the she-cat’s quick recognition of him.

“Y-you’re asking me?!” he whisper-hissed as his ears folded back. It was far too early for this carefully constructed plan to crumble. It would take another moon to pass along another message, and there was nothing that could keep an Asylum cat quiet other than imprisonment or death. Blood was on their paws before the war had even begun. Beecloud took three razor sharp breaths, sucking in and out through his nose and rolling his neck, massaging his raised hackles. “Okay, okay. Let me through. Release him. Let's… let's figure this out. We're not gonna kill him yet.”

Beecloud gripped Roe by the scruff and hoisted him to his paws before pitching him into the middle of the ring of warriors. As Quaildock approached, Beecloud nodded a greeting to his clanmate. “You're right on time. Make sure this cat doesn't flee.”

The warrior took a breath, nervously shifting his gaze among his comrades. How much could he reveal without this tom becoming a liability? “You’re in a pinch, don't you think?” he hissed. “You're surrounded by warriors, in the middle of the evening. We're unguarded. Unsupervised. We're outlaws; fugitives. Very scary stuff. Not an ally in sight. You're very outnumbered. Nobody is coming for you.”

The tom squared his shoulders and lumbered forward, extending his extra claws for Roe to see as he slowly opened his jowl, exposing his long fangs. With eyes narrowed and scarred face only just healed, he was ghastly and primal. “If you value your limbs, your eyesight, or even your life, I think it would be a good idea for you to tell us everything that you know about the place with four tall trees and a large rock. You passed it on your way here, right? It's called Fourtrees. The constellation Silverpelt shines brightest there. You know something about it… and what your kind has done to desecrate it. Time to talk.”

After all the time spent with a guard or two prowling behind her, walking the territory unencumbered felt foreign to Ravenclaw. It shouldn't have, but she wasn't old enough to have many memories of a free, powerful SkyClan. Heck, she hadn't spent much time outside the camp in the dead of night like this before Asylum came knocking. However, she had to admit that she liked it. She was able to pass through the forest without anyone noticing: no guards, no prey. It was just her bathed in the darkness, her pitch-black pelt melding within the darkness. 'Like a ShadowClan cat,' she thought humorously.

She eventually reached the Thunderpath, where her fellow mice had gathered. The roar of the monsters barreling down the acrid stretch masked their sounds, though the cats had to gather close to hear each other talk. It disgusted her to mingle scents with other clan cats, but she kept telling herself that it was necessary in order to free SkyClan from the cruel grasp of the Asylum. Besides her muted greeting to Beecloud, she remained mostly silent, if only because there wasn't much time to go over the plan. Right after Beecloud's speech, a cat that was not invited came into the picture. An Asylum cat.

The whispers started immediately, along with questions of what to do. Her hackles raised, Ravenclaw could only snort derisively. There was only one thing to do, wasn't there? Kill the intruder. It's what they all wanted to do. However, he wasn't immediately killed, and though Beecloud's words were firm, it wasn't enough for Ravenclaw. "This is ridiculous," she hissed, standing in a closed circle with the other cats. Her gaze kept bouncing between Beecloud and the intruder, as if he might jump the circle and make a run for it. "These ratfaces have caused us misery. Stolen our kits, killed our clanmates. Kill him and throw his body on the Thunderpath." She let her claws come out, sinking into the snow. "I'll do it."

There was a long pause as Roe cowered, to afraid to make any moves. He felt weak, sluggish. He had been fed enough to barely keep up his strength. He nearly wanted to laugh however when the warrior - Beecloud, he imagined, noted that there was no allies in sight. He didn't have any allies, not anymore. But he said nothing, holding his tongue as he waited for the warrior to get to the point. His ears twitched as the tom mentioned the clearing, glancing up. What would they want with Fourtrees? ...Unless...His eyes glanced over the gathering of cats, grimmacing for a moment. They...They were going to take the fight to them, weren't they? Put an end to Asylum's leaders or die trying. His heart sank at the thought, before he pushed it away. ...No, it was for the better. He had seen what Asylum was truly doing. He tensed his muscles as - with some effort - opened up his muzzle. Pain flared through his mouth, causing him to wince as this was the furthest he had dared open his mouth other than to eat. He opened and closed it a few times just to be sure, before he raised his head to meet Beecloud’s stare. "...You are right," he finally meowed, lifting his head up. "I do know of that place. This...Fourtrees. But I didn't pass it. I came from there. You want knowledge? I have plenty."

He shifted into a more comfortable position but didn't are rise up - he didn't want to be a threat. There was a moment of hesitation as he raised a paw toward his mouth, running a paw over the scars that lined his muzzle. "...And you are also wrong. I have no allies. Asylum, they...My own pack gave me this. I thought...I fell for their lies, their promises of this being for the better. I was punished for telling some cats the truth on what Asylum had done to them. I’m only alive because Theron has...Some fondness for me and was certain she could buy my loyalty back,” he admitted, shaking his head. He was tired of being used - he didn’t want to fight for Asylum anymore, not now that he had seen their true colors. How wrong he had been when he had defended them… Perhaps they truly believed in what they sprouted, but that only meant that they had to be stopped before more innocent cats were killed to satisfy their own bloodlust.

There was a long pause before he blinked. "...Right, you want to know about Fourtrees. You...Have a good force but it won't be simple. Fourtrees is their - our - new staging ground. That is where you will find the Captains, the Head and a pawful of their loyal cats. But...That isn't all," he meowed, glancing around at the others. “...And the taken cats - the ones stolen from the Clans for what Asylum deems as crimes. We’ve been holding them there, where Eris and the others could keep an eye on them. If you aren’t careful, they will become hostages. I don't know how much of help they would be in your fight if they managed to raise claws...They...We hadn't taken the best...Care of them,” he admitted with a shake of his head. There was another long pause as something bothered him - before he remembered the very reason he had chosen this direction. His breath caught in his throat as he straightened up with a look of panic on his face.

“They- They are going to be there!” He pushed himself to his paws, a pleading expression on his face as he stared up at Beecloud. “Th-There is a group of Asylum cats - they are...They were kits, stolen from the Clans shortly after we first arrived. They were called to Fourtrees - I-I don’t know why or for what, I didn’t hear the conversation. I-I was hoping to run into Thalia - warn her away but…” his ears slicked back, shaking his head. “T-They don’t deserve this! They were lied to their entire lives but I told them the truth when one questioned me about it! That truth - what we did to them, where they came from - that is what I was punished for! They could be in trouble - their loyalties certainly are being questioned. Please, you have to spare them if you can! They are just kids!”

The prisoners are alive. Robinloft is alive. Orangepaw and Softpaw and Cedarheart. Minkstream, Batbite. They're alive. Family, friends. Kin, country. We will see them again.

Beecloud listened patiently and spoke not a word, though as Roe began to break down in trembles and sobs, he felt the slow and meticulous retraction of his claws. The information that the Asylum cat was so willingly ceding to the Mousehunt certainly counted for some charge of treason. If he was on a mission of espionage, he was biting off more than he could chew. No matter what he was playing at, or whether he was telling the truth or lying, Beecloud could see that this was a very timid, frail, and terrified cat. He was not capable of the kind of wrath he would have expected from an Asylum spy.

But though the tom evoked consuming emotion in his response, he had given no reason for the warriors to trust him. Beecloud looked behind his shoulder, to Zinnia and Hayglow, who would have known him best. Their faces conveyed a certain amount of trust, even past the general disdain they had for the Asylum as a whole. Beecloud's face swung back around. "Okay. Let's say you're telling the truth. You will walk with us to Fourtrees, as our hostage. Given our success, I'll make sure you're granted amnesty and freedom. If you give these warriors any reason to doubt your cooperation... Ravenclaw will have her way about it. That's a fair enough plea deal, if you ask me."

Beecloud tapped his nose to Ravenclaw's shoulder apologetically. He was not a believer in revenge, but these days it took the place of justice. Eye for eye and tooth for tooth, they took back their forest in pieces. But this tom was an asset; as long as he was an informant, he was more useful to them while he could still breathe.

"Alright, listen here," he whispered. "We storm the clearing from the four cardinal directions. Our priority is first to free the captives. Even emaciated, they are warriors, through and through, and they will certainly be enough to overwhelm the Asylum forces. I want every guard engaged in combat, even if it means you're outnumbered three-to-one. Especially the captains. Every single cat in that clearing has to be distracted, because..."

StarClan, forgive me. "... Because I need an opening to kill Eris. None of you should have to carry the burden of breaking the Code. I will not have your souls on my paws because of a plan of my devising. Our sins will be mine to take on. It will be just me and her, to the final breath. When she is dead, they will scatter like roaches. Does everybody understand?"

He waited for nods and diffused mews of confirmation. Everything suddenly felt very bleak. "Then it's decided. Let's go."

With Roe surrounded, the warriors moved off in their horde towards the viper's nest.

The captured clanmates, the missing kits... All at fourtrees, if this Asylum tom was to be believed. Mistyfalcon was by nature a suspicious cat, and yet the tom did not seem like he was lying, not in this, at least. The panic, the sense of urgency... No, he had to be telling the truth.

He flicked the dark-furred Skyclanner- Ravenclaw- a mildly amused look. In truth, Mistyfalcon agreed with her. Leaving the asylum tom alive was dangerous. If he was a trap, the mousehunt was done for, surely.

Dark blue eyes returned to the asylum tom, and Mistyfalcon felt his lips curl in a silent snarl. The rogues had let Brighteye die. They had, if the tom was to be believed, taken Burntkit and Emberkit. And now they were at fourtrees, trained to be used as soldiers against their own kin. They'd taken Murkystrike, and Crowcall. Mistyfalcon hadn't liked the tom, but he was Shadowclan. His claws unsheathed, and Mistyfalcon wanted very much for the tom to make a misstep, show the slightest hint of aggression.
