Zooming Herbs (closed)

"Smallbean, herb hunt!" Softbreeze called, not giving the tom a chance to reply before taking off, an Asylum cat and Downtuft trailing after them. "You know basic herbs, right? We'll stick to finding the basics today. Poppy seed, cobwebs, chickweed, comfrey, marigold, juniper, and horsetail."

Having explained what they were looking for, Softbreeze branched off from the other two -- three, technically, but the Asylum monster barely counted -- to go collect some plants from a patch of comfrey. "Don't gather all of them that patch; we need them to grow back, after all. If you find red berries, call for me and for the love of Finchstar, do not eat it."

Downtuft nodded as Softbreeze instructed, keeping one on his sister and one on Smallbean as he went to collect some bluey purple berries (she didn't say those were bad, right??) that he didn't know the name of, but had seen in Softbreeze's den.

At the call of his name, Smallbean let out a soft sigh. He was not in any way looking forward to medicine cat duties, nor even being called a medicine cat apprentice. He hated this whole situation; the Asylum cats, being forced to be a medicine cat, having to communicate with the cats who have made his life so horrible by taking those he cared about. It disgusted him. Even so, he followed Softbreeze, soon noticing Downtuft was tagging along. Of course, the ominous Asylum cat lurked in the background, but he didn't even want to count them as a cat, much lass a member of the patrol.

As they walked along, he made sure to pay attention to Softbreeze's words. Starclan, he had been a warrior for so long, having to pay attention like an apprentice was so unusual. Even if he hated that he was now a medicine cat, he might as well make it easier and pay attention. After finding out what he was to do, he gave an unmotivated nod and looked around, scanning the area for something he recognized. It would be hard to see anything living, considering it was Leaf-bare, but maybe something would be hiding under a rock or in a hollow log. Walking over to a hollowed out tree, he scanned the inside of it, searching for something green. He huffed when he saw there was nothing inside and began to turn around, but quickly turned back as he recalled seeing cobwebs. Scooping them up with his paw, he padded back over to Softbreeze. "I found some cobwebs... Am i supposed to put them anywhere while i go looking for something else or am i supposed to carry them along?"

"You can put them over here with the chickweed and juniper. You never carry cobwebs around unless you have to; they'll become less sticky. Nicely spotted, by the way." Softbreeze explained, then gave a soft smile. She knew he didn't really enjoy this, but neither of them really had a choice in the matter.

Padding away, she noticed a small patch of pretty golden flowers, marigold, she quickly realized, and went to harvest three of them, as only five of the buds had bloomed. Downtuft sighed in relief, thankful he hadn't accidentally brought back poison and set off to find more plants, spotting some green shrub looking thing with wide leaves and weird bell flowers. It looked similar to the first thing Softbreeze had found so he brought it back. By the delight in Softbreeze's eyes, he figured he'd found something useful. (He had, in fact, he'd found comfrey)

When he got his answer, he turned around and put the cobwebs on a leaf and pushed it out of the way. He was beginning to believe that Softbreeze herself hated mentoring him- that was until he turned back around. Something about her smile made him realize that maybe it wasn't all so bad, even if he wasn't particularly happy with the situation. His unhappy expression softened into something neutral as he turned away to continue herb hunting. Attempting to use the same tactic he did to find a cobweb, he decided to try looking on the inside of a fallen log. Maybe something growing inside was shielded by it and managed to grow. Sweeping the area with his mismatched gaze he soon found what he was looking for wand walked toward it, wondering what he would find inside. Even though he didn't enjoy having to go herb hunting, something about the randomness of finding herbs made him feel excited, the fact that you would never know what you could find, how it could be something rare or common. Peeking into the log, he spotted golden flowers growing against it's dull walls. He reached inside and snatched up some of them, leaving some to grow as Softbreeze had instructed. he turned around and ran back to where he had set the cobwebs and laid the Marigold beside it.
