never alone anymore [open hunting patrol]

The forest was cold, and the early morning sun's rays did little to warm it. Thankfully, Tigersong's thick pelt kept him shielded from most of the chill, but there was no doubt that this Leafbare was going to be a bad one. Perhaps it was the fire, having destroyed so many trees and shrubs that it was easier for the wind to cut through SkyClan's territory, but it made Tigersong feel sorry for any SkyClanner that had shorter fur than he. The Nightstrikers could freeze, for all he cared.

Regardless of the discomfort of hunting in the cold, it had to be done, and this morning the young warrior found himself as part of a hunting patrol headed out into the deeper part of the territory, where the fire hadn't destroyed quite everything. He broke off from the group, slinking through the sparse underbrush until he caught a scent. A quail, no - several quail, were in a small clearing just ahead, soaking in what sun they could manage to find, and clustered together not unlike the cats in the warrior's den.

Tigersong set his eyes on the nearest of them, a large one with its head tucked against its chest and sleeping soundly. Without much ceremony, he darted forward. The birds scattered with calls of alarm, but Tigersong was on his target before it had the chance to fly. His teeth sank into the bird's slender neck, and as the rest fled, the one between his paws went limp.

Flashpaw had barely been made an apprentice and already he was on a patrol. And he had no idea what he was doing. Flowerthorn had said this would be a good opportunity for him. But how was he supposed to learn if he wasn't being taught, just thrown in and expected to catch something. And he honestly felt a little nervous too, with all of these more experienced hunters.

A bunch of quail had come to land in a field where he had broke away from the patrol as every cat split up. It seemed like there were quail everywhere in this part of the forest. Thankfully he was alone, because as he charged through the flock, jaws parted as he tried to catch anything he could, as he was sure he would scare off any prey the others would have had a chance of catching.

Of course he had not caught anything, why would he after all? But as he stood, panting, he had heard a cry from above. Before he even had a chance to look around, he felt a sharp pain in his side as talons raked across his flank. It appeared he was not the only one who was hunting here. "Help! I need help over here!" He called out, striking out with unsheathed paws at the bird that had attacked him.

Blossomstep had decided to join the hunting patrol at the last moment, walking out with Tigersong, Flashpaw, and a pawful of others. Flashpaw was still young, and had not had much time to train with Flowerthorn, especially since she had her kits. Bounding up into the limbs above with ease, the warrior carefully maneuvered through the leafless branches, ears alert for her next catch. A sudden rustling in the branches caught her attention, and her head turned to focus on the form of an eagle swooping down towards the young apprentice. "Flashpaw!," she exclaimed, leaping from branch to branch with a skill that came from moons of experience, until she was positioned carefully just above the eagle. Her claws extended as she pushed out, crashing down on the bird with deadly precision. She rolled deftly as she hit the ground, the bird along with her, before springing back up to four paws and whirling around, maw curled as she let out a furious hiss.

Copperfox had been about to do his first patrol when heard a young tom calling for help. He couldn't quite place the voice, but he charged forward in that direction anyway. His heart pounded in his chest. He hated fighting... he always had. As he approached, he saw the scene unfold. Blossomstep, his grandmother, had dropped down onto an eagle. Tigersong and a fairly new apprentice was there as well. Flashpaw? Was that his name? It didn't matter. Copperfox raced toward it, his teeth grit and unable to find his voice for the time being. Even his attempt at a yowl resulted in a fiercely open maw with no sound coming out of it. He dropped his weight onto the eagle and pinned it in place, slashing furiously at it... all the while shuddering and barely holding back his breakfast with every feeling of flesh giving way beneath his claws.

Dawnhawk too had heard the cry. He recognized the voice. Flashpaw was far from one of his favorites, and he seriously considered leaving the mouthy mouse-brained idiot to his fate. However, the sight of his brother charging through the woods made him sigh. He gave chase, curious to see what the fuss was all about. Seeing the eagle trapped beneath his brother's claws, he had little hopes for the eagle's survival. Still... it had been awhile before Dawnhawk had run his claws through another living creature and this was a decent opportunity to relieve a few frustrations. Flashpaw's wretched little face would have been far more entertaining, but the eagle would have to do for now. He charged in, intending to demolish the bird of prey.

Rage fueled him as he leapt away from the eagle, his side blooding and his breath fast and heavy. Thankfully Blossomstep and Copperfox had come to help, although he refused to acknowledge Dawnhawk's presence. As far as he cared, that eagle could carry him away. But he was not about to let the cat get away with thinking he had saved him.

Charging at the bird of prey, he raked his claws across it's eyes, slicing the skin above it's hard beak. He was not a cat to be trifled with.

The eagle cried out as an onslaught of cats attacked him. Why were so many cats protecting this one puny one? The apprentice was small, but it wasn't at nursing age! An eagle would have left the nest at the point of it's life that cat was at. These cats were weird, that was for sure. There was a sharp pain as the eagle was knocked to the ground, her wings splayed out awkwardly. She was unable to fight back as the young cat she had attacked came back, slicing her face. She could feel a hot liquid pooling into her eyes, and she cried with rage.

Copperfox and Dawnhawk leapt into the fray then, Copperfox jumping onto the eagle and bringing it the ground. With a nod of approval, Blossomstep circled around to the front of the bird, determined to keep it from attacking the apprentice again should it try. There was a bitter taste in her mouth as she watched Dawnhawk slash his claws at the bird, and she couldn't help but see Bloodstrike in the bird for only a moment before Flashpaw darted forward again. Following up behind him, Blossomstep reared back on her hind legs, paws aimed at the eagle's head. Bringing all of her weight down, she felt the bird go limp under her paws and stepped back, head turning to the sky to search for any more the may be in the area. Usually there wasn't more than one, but a cat never knew for sure.

Flashpaw let out a sigh of relief as the eagle had finally been killed, it’s feathers splayed ungracefully on the ground. Though he would not let any cat know, he had been terrified. Had his Clanmates not come, that eagle would have easily done away with him. His legs were shaking after it all, and he decided to lie down and catch his breath.

His side had begun to ache with a searing pain that made him wince, although the bleeding itself had stopped. The fur around the wound was now crusted with dry blood, which he had begun to lap away with his tongue. He would need to have a word with Flowerthorn after this, no question about it.
