A Bird in the Hand [Closed]

Buzzardpaw trailed after the two older apprentices, repeating some of the basics he’d learned about hunting over and over in his head. He was grateful that the pair had been willing to go hunting with him, and he wanted to make sure he didn’t just become dead weight.

He didn’t totally notice when the group stopped, and nearly stumbled into one of his two companions, but managed to catch himself just in the nick of time.

After catching himself, he simply stood, statue-like, waiting for either Quailpaw or Kestrelpaw to indicate that it was time to start hunting.

Kestrelpaw didn't have much to do on this particular day, which was a rarity. For what seemed like the first time in his life, he was bored. Nobody had any tasks he could assist with and the patrols were full. His father was busy so there was no training for him. The only thing he could think of to satisfy his need to bury himself in work was to interact with the other apprentices. It was for a day. Just a day socializing. He'd be fine...right?

His little mission had led him to young Buzzardpaw. He hadn't gotten to know the other but there was a first for everything. This day seemed to have brought many 'firsts' upon him. Although, he should've already learned to expect the unexpected.

After speaking with Buzzard for a bit, the younger tom had mentioned that he wanted to go out hunting but wanted to alongside some companions. Kestrel hadn't even stopped to think and blurted out that he wouldn't mind tagging along. Their conversation had apparently attracted the attention of another apprentice, who happened to be his brother. Quailpaw, too, had offered to come along. They waited for a tad just to make sure nobody else was interested. With no other parties wanting to come, the trio set out into the territory, prey prominent in their minds.

This is where they were at now. He and Quail had stopped them, both having agreed that this was a good place to start catching prey. Kestrelpaw turned to nod at Buzzardpaw, his indication that he was free to start scenting for some prey. Before either Buzzard or Quail left, he turned to face them before speaking in a subdued tone, "Let's meet up here when we're done. Catch only what you're willing or able to carry. Be careful and enjoy yourselves." He offered them a tiny hint of a smile before he set off.

After wandering in a random direction for a few minutes, he managed to catch a faint whiff of a bird's scent nearby. He stealthily maneuvered around any debris that could alert the feathered critter. Soon enough, he spotted the prey. It was pecking away at something by it's claws. As carefully as he could he inched toward it, paws as light as they could go. He readied himself to bring it down if it chose to fly off before he could properly catch it. Once he was at a safe distance, he leaped.

As soon as his paws touched warmth, he encased the creature within a small prison of sharp claws. He gave it a swift killing bite, promptly ending it's struggle. It was a decent success. He did make a bit too much noise for his liking but he'd allow it for now.

Kestel quickly buried his catch somewhere safe and returned to scouting out any more prey. He hoped the others were having some good luck.

Quailpaw walked besides his brother as the group of apprentices slowed to a stop.



Quailpaw nodded in agreement to Kerath. "M'kay." He said before waving his tail to Buzzardpaw and started walking off in the oppsite direction of Kerath. After about 15 minutes, Quailpaw slowed down and sniffed the cool Leaf-fall air before catching a whiff off a squrriel. Quailpaw crouched down and approched the squrriel, who seemed to have put it self in the middle of two trees. Two escape routes. Didn't know Squrriels could be smart. He though before stopping and crouching down.

Quailpaw was about to leap on the squrriel and kill it when another scent caught his nose. His fur pricked up as he turned his back around to see a badger, walking around. Quailpaw crouched lower to the ground forgetting about the squrriel. "Foxdung!" He muttered. The badger turned it head towards his direction and started walking towards him. "Foxdung!" He said louder and in more fear.

Quailpaw tried to catch a squrriel but failed and instead spawned a badger, costing -3 sp

Buzzardpaw began doing his best to track after a squirrel, following slowly, step by step, having to constantly focus in on what he was processing through his good eye and ear.

Almost by chance, he managed to catch sight of a large, black and white pelt moving through the forest ahead of him. He'd never seen one before, but he knew by description that it must be a badger.

The apprentice quickly pressed himself downward, and near the trunk of a close by tree, hoping all the factors that had made him hard to notice even when he wanted to be-- his small stature, his dark brown pelt, and his quiet nature--  would actually now work in his favor. For once, he seemed to be having a stroke of good luck, and the badger went in another direction.

Relief washed over him until he began to wonder if one of the others was in said direction. He couldn't fully remember-- and he couldn't see well enough to get the answer from a distance-- so he would have to approach.

His concerns, unfortunately, proved founded, as he approached the badger approaching Quailpaw. His heart pounded-- he'd never been in a fight before, and add on top of that the fact that his seeing and hearing were weakened... What was he supposed to do?

Well, clearly whatever the answer was, it wasn't nothing.

The small tom went barreling awkwardly into the large creature, throwing the full force of his miniscule weight at it and hoping for the best.

Buzzardpaw used Run and Tackle on badger, dealing 6(+3) damage and costing 10 stamina

Kerath was mid-stalk when the sound of a battle reached his ears. He was instantly on alert, prey quickly forgotten. The fighting sounded like it was nearby. That meant only one thing, his denmates had been attacked and were in danger. He turned around and raced back to where he came from. The noises were resonating from the direction Quailpaw had gone to. His dear brother was in trouble. His heart pounded and adrenaline coursed through his body. He was mentally preparing himself to battle. He wasn't the most knowledgeable on how to fight and that made him super nervous. He didn't know how much he'd be able to contribute.

As he neared the sources of the noises, his eyes caught sight of the aggressor. It was a terrible looking badger. It's scent stank and it was making Kestrel's eyes water a bit. He paid no mind to the thoughts that were now flooding his mind. He knew this wasn't going to end very well but they had no other choice. Hopefully nobody would get any major injuries. Oh StarClan, protect them all...

He got there right when Buzzardpaw had rammed his body against the predator with as much force as a cat his size could muster. They were all much smaller than the black and white creature but maybe if they put all their might into their attacks, they'd be able to come out victorious. He doubted it but it was well worth the try.

Kestrelpaw decided to mimic his clanmate's action and tackled the beast with a good deal of momentum. Both of them managed to jostle the badger and make it quite a bit more irritated. They caught it off guard and it's previous confident movements were now a bit more sluggish. There was no turning back now.
