Dawnpaw tensed as his sister's claws raked at his belly, and her added kicking strength nearly had him retching from the damage. He managed to squirm away, but he was very ready for this to be over. Lines of pink stained the underside of his coat. He didn't like that one bit...
I need to end this quick or she'll wreck me.
Dawnpaw dashed forward, notably slower now, and aimed to slide under her and out the other side and roll back to his feet. His claws shot up at her belly as he slid, hoping to make a good hit as he passed under her.
Dawnpaw used belly rake, dealing 7 damage and -10SP
Beechpaw let out a soft hiss as claws raked her belly, unable to move out of the way as quickly this time. Dawnpaw was moving noticeably slower, but Beechpaw wasn't at her best either. Between the heat and that last blow, she was going to be hurting much sooner rather than later. For the moment though, Beechpaw was intent on ignoring the pain while the adrenaline still ran through her veins.
Shoving off of the ground, the heavily-furred she cat leapt to the branch of a nearby tree. She launched herself at Dawnpaw, aiming to land squarely on his back. They were both nearing their limit, she felt, hopefully her solid weight landing on his back would be enough to end this.
"Are we done?" She snapped at him, not bothering to keep the fury out of her tone. "This is hare-brained. Forget Spottedstar, dad and Wolfcall would rip us a new one for fighting like this."
Beechpaw used Sky Drop on Dawnpaw for -7 damage, costing -15sp.
Dawnpaw kicked off of the ground in an attempt to get away, but he was tired and the soreness in his abdomen made his gait awkward and jerky. His larger sibling plummeted from the branch and he proved to be less than fast enough.
She landed on him and his legs crumpled beneath him like twigs. He involuntarily let out a yelp that he couldn't control as air rushed out of his lungs and vibrated his vocal chords, but it was the only noise he was able to make.
He lie there for a moment, the strength in his legs leaving him. She began to speak and he turned his head to look at her.
"I won't tell if you don't..." he said between breaths. They were both pretty spent. Dawnpaw had only a bit of energy left to fight, but if they were agreed to end this and no word got to anyone else about their spat, then his energy would be better spent hiding the evidence of their quarrel.
Dawnpaw did not attack this turn. Truce and ending fight in a draw is being considered.
Dawnpaw actually yelped as Beechpaw dropped onto him from above. She'd remember that sound.
"Fine, call it a draw, then." Beechpaw panted, now that she was staying still for, she was feeling the effects of the fight. Winded. Very winded. "We're going to have to clean ourselves up first, if we go back to camp like this they'll notice immediately."
With that, Beechpaw lifted herself off of her brother and retreated to the opposite end of the clearing. It took more effort than she would admit to control her breathing. Yes, his claws in her belly had hurt. Her fur was ragged where Dawnpaw's claws had scratched her back, too. The clawmarks stung, and Beechpaw grimaced at the thought of how they'd feel later.
"...If anyone comes this way, they'll also notice." She muttered ruefully, taking in the sight of blood and pale fur that had been scattered on the ground, a result of their fight. Beechpaw, as a rule, avoided getting into trouble. She only ever got into trouble when her sack-of-fox-dung brother was present.
The large apprentice let out a weary sigh, lifting a paw to gingerly pick her brother's fur out from between her claws. Ugh. She'd actually fought a clanmate... And her brother, at that. They might not have liked each other at all, but it was still wrong.
Dawnpaw sucked in a lungful of breath greedily once his sister was off of him. He stood to his paws and briefly was tempted to jump on her back and claw her some more. Still... she had a point. There was a lot of mess here to clean up now. It would be better if both of them worked together on this. "Hiding this and cleaning ourselves up isn't a big deal, but what are we going to tell our mentors when we come back all scratched up? They will notice." He started raking all of the bloody leaves and tufts of fur into a pile, exposing the forest earth below all of the decaying debris around them.
"Look around and make sure there is no more. If you find some just put it into that pile. I'll start digging, we'll bury it, and then pee on it to kill the scent." He started to claw furiously at the earth that he had exposed. Despite the heat of greenleaf, it was still fairly moist the further down he went... and...
"You dig a little bit too. The dirt cleans the blood off pretty well." He dug even faster, burning the last of his fighting energy on making an appropriately sized hole for the bloodied leaves and fluff tufts.
"Some sort of predator, maybe... Or rogues," Beechpaw shrugged. Maybe you should've thought of that before attacking me, you fox-hearted piece of... She thought bitterly, but had the sense to keep the thought to herself.
At his instruction, Beechpaw didn't reply, merely began to scrape tufts of fur and bloody leaves over to the pile Dawnpaw had started. If she spoke now, she was sure she'd only wind up snapping at him, and then they'd be trying to rip each other's fur off once more.
Beechpaw began clawing at the dirt, imagining that it was Dawnpaw's fur instead. That made the monotonous task somewhat more bearable, at least. She had half a mind to just leave him to it and stalk off toward the river; the blood coating her fur was already drying in the heat and was less than comfortable. Beechpaw's tail tip twitched back and forth in irritation at the sensation of her fur clumping together, but for now she would have to ignore it and continue on. Dawnpaw had been right, not that Beechpaw would admit it; the dirt did help get at least some of the blood out of her fur.
Beechpaw turned, eyeing the pile of stained fur and leaves with a grimace of distaste. Wearily, she lifted a paw and began to unceremoniously scrape them into the hole. I really should just leave him to do the rest of this she thought again, now seriously debating doing just that. She could clean off her fur in the river, and hopefully it would be long enough to cover the scratches from Dawnpaw's claws. She doubted that a story about a predator or rogues would convince Wolfcall of what had happened. Smokefeather and Bloodstrike would see through it instantly, Beechpaw was sure, just as they'd seen through the pair when they'd been kits.
Beechpaw just had to keep her thoughts off of her face, just for a little while longer. She was so very sick and tired of fighting with Dawnpaw, so very sick and tired of constant arguments...
Bloodpaw glanced around very carefully for more fur tufts and leaves that were obviously blood-stained, but he didn't see any after a few moments of careful searching. Satisfied, he pushed the evidence into the hole and rapidly began to cover it back up. Once the earth was over it, he packed it down a bit by pushing down on it with his front paws like a bear might when trying to smash a bear-proof trashcan.
"We'll clean our fur in a second." He said to her, really trying to keep the irritation out of his voice. She didn't have to speak. He could tell by how she kept checking her fur that she was annoyed with how the blood clumped it together. "This is our last step, then we can go, but if need to be careful in the water too. It's low, remember? Everyone is going to be there with mossballs and I bet they don't want our nasty, ratty hides in the drinking water." Seriously.... did she ever think anything through? Water would get the blood off and he would be sure to dry in a way that floofed him up pretty good to hide the scratches.
With a sigh to calm himself, Dawnpaw squatted over the earth that he had dug up and relieved himself on it to kill the scent of blood beneath the dirt. As soon as he was done, he moved away and nodded at it. "If you have to go, then do it now." He still thought going to the river was a bad idea, but he would do it. "Once you're done, put fresh leaves over it. If anyone does happen to find the scratch marks on the ground, they'll only smell urine and assume that's all it is." He held his chin up a bit, proud of his own cleverness.
Yes, dad, Beechpaw didn't bother replying to her brother. The river wasn't standing water, and while it was low, their drinking water would be fine with two half-grown apprentices using it to clean their fur.
The more Dawnpaw kept bossing her around, the more she was tempted to box his ears in. But that would require effort, and Beechpaw didn't want to waste that precious energy on him. She wouldn't. But it was tempting.
Beechpaw did her business, then covered the results with leaves. And Dawnpaw. was. still. talking. Great Starclan. Does he ever stop?
"Okay, we're done here." Beechpaw struggled to keep an irritated growl from her voice as she turned away from Dawnpaw. Time to go clean up the rest of her fur, and get away from this self-important furball. And hopefully manage to ignore his incessant chatter on her way to the river.
