Into Sunshine (closed)

The sun was bright overhead, deep shadows mottling the leaf-carpeted forest floor as Wolfcall and Blossomstep padded quietly through the territory. He was in no rush - this wasn't an official patrol, not of the hunting nor the security variety, and he had nowhere to be except here, spending time with the love of his life. Things had progressed very quickly recently within SkyClan - the sudden influx of kits that were now apprentices had divided Wolfcall's attentions, and he regrettably got to spend much less time with his mate than he liked. Which is why today, he'd asked her to come out with him, just the two of them, to enjoy some peace and quiet together. "We haven't done this in ages," he said quietly, brushing against her with a gentle nudge of his shoulder as he walked. "Don't get me wrong, parenthood is..." he breathed out a laugh, rich and genuine, "...wonderful. But it's been so busy. It seems like we hardly get alone time anymore."

The movement near the roots of a tree up ahead made him pause, and the deputy narrowed his eyes on a squirrel with its back to them. He held his tail out for Blossomstep to stop as well, and then crouched, tensed, and bolted forward.

It hadn't even heard him coming, and Wolfcall was on the squirrel in seconds, piercing its neck with a killing bite. It grew still in his grasp, and he turned, eyes lit up, to look at Blossomstep before padding back towards her. "Much better than that first time we hunted together, huh?" he grinned, placing the creature near the edge of a fallen log and scraping moss and dirt atop it.

Blossomstep took a deep breath, exhaling as she padded next to her love. Since she had learned she was pregnant, they both had been caught in the storm of the kitting, the recovery, the rearing, and the going back to regular duties as their kits grew faster than she had ever imagined. Smiling over at Wolfcall as he spoke, she nodded. "It's been far too long.... And I agree. Our kits are growing so quickly, it's so hard to keep up... But it's nice to have some time together again." The rustling ahead caught her attention as well, and as Wolfcall held up his tail she stopped, crouching down silently. In a heartbeat, Wolfcall had lurched forward and in the next he turned towards her with a squirrel dangling from his jaws. She purred as he buried it quickly, pressing her nose to his shoulder at the memory. "Much better," she agreed. "If neither of us end up in the medicine den at the end of this, I'll be thrilled." She teased him lightly, continuing on through the undergrowth in search of a catch of her own.

As she broke through the edge of a clearing, she saw a rabbit nibbling some grass only a few tail lengths away. She froze, excitement building in her. It must have crossed Fourtrees.... After a quick check to make sure no other cats had accidentally followed it, she burst forward. In a flash, the rabbit was running as well, but having been caught off guard she swiftly caught it and ended it's life before it could draw breath to make a racket. Standing, her breathing quick from the short chase, she searched for Wolfcall's pelt.

He wasn't far, appearing through the trees with a plump mouse hanging from his jaws. His eyes widened at the sight of her catch, and he nodded approvingly - rabbits weren't terribly common on SkyClan territory, and it took quite a deal of skill to catch them. Wolfcall buried his mouse near his first kill, then hummed thoughtfully and rubbed his cheek along Blossomstep's shoulder lovingly. "This isn't an official hunting patrol - let's find a place to sit and share that, and we can hunt a little more on the way back?"

His brows raised, tail waving roguishly. He wanted to sit and relax and enjoy each other's company, and it was beautiful out. Birds sang overhead, insects chattered in the grass, but best of all, there was nowhere they had to be. "I know a spot," he told her, nudging his mate gently and not giving her the time to respond before he was prancing away, looking over his shoulder at her expectantly.

There he was, eyes widening when he saw what hung from her jaws. Purring as he nuzzled her shoulder gently, she quickly agreed with his suggestion. Following his lead, her eyes gleamed with excitement as they made their way through the forest. It was such a beautiful day, and the trees and sun seemed to be sharing their excitement at having some time for each other again. Looking over at her mate, she admired the way the sun shone off of his pelt, and her heart fluttered at the thought that she was the one he chose to share a nest with.
