Shade in a stream (Training)

Streamtail opened her eyes at the crack of dawn. It was training time for her newest apprentice, Shadepaw. Stretching, Streamtail padded out of the warriors den and poked her head into the apprentice’s den. Spotting Shadepaw’s familiar dark fur, she whispered. “Hey. Shadepaw. Time for training. Meet me outside and we’ll grab some fresh kill before leaving.”  With that, Streamtail padded towards the fresh-kill pile, grabbing a mouse for herself and a fish for Shadepaw.

Shadepaw's ear twitched in his light sleep as he heard his mentor call his name. He yawned and stretched, flexing out his ebony toes. Padding from the apprentice's den, he waved his tail at Streamtail and quietly joined her at the fresh-kill pile. Noticing a small trout, he realized she must've gotten it for him. He dipped his head in thanks, digging into the deliciously slimy fish. Shadepaw couldn't wait for training today. It was gonna be great!

(Do you want them to encounter a predator? It would help with the battle requirement.)

Streamtail nodded as her apprentice finished up his prey. “Okay...so we’re going to hunt today. Would you want to hunt on land or in water?” She knew that RiverClan relied heavily on fish, but Shadepaw would have to learn how to hunt on land too. “It’s your choice, we can always learn both of them.” Streamtail tilted her head in curiousness.

As Shadepaw finished his trout, he pondered for a moment, listing the pros and cons.

Land hunting would be useful if there were no fish.

Fishing is easy, and RiverClan's skill.

Yet... He wanted to try something a bit different. Flicking a few scraps of fish from one of his paws, he drew out a shape in the sand. A bushy, circular shape, with two lines on each side. A tree! He figured that not many cats- RiverClan, anyway- hunted in trees. But hearing nursery tales of floods that kept cats in trees for hours, or even days, he figured that hunting in the trees might come in useful. Plus- one night as a kit- he had snuck out and realized he was actually pretty good at climbing trees.

Stepping aside to let Streamtail see the image, he flicked his tail at it, then some trees in the distance.

(Predator?) 

Streamtail examined the drawing, and her eyes widened in surprise. “Climbing trees? That suits SkyClan and ThunderClan more...I have never actually climbed any trees...RiverClan is best suited for fishing a low movement on the ground. I don’t know...but we could try.” Streamtail hesitated slightly, before padding towards the trees. “Okay then...here we are.”

(Sure.)

Shadepaw reconsidered a bit after what she had said. She was right. They should just stick to ground or lake hunting for now. He flicked his tail towards the bushes and sparse undergrowth, beckoning towards a mouse nibbling a berry at the foot of a juniper-berry bush. As a kit, he had seen some of the older apprentices practicing what they called "The Hunters' Crouch." From what he knew, he instinctively dropped low, his ebony tail snaking silently over the grass and sand. He crept closer to the fat mouse, who was intent on it's berry. Trying to see how far he would need to leap, he accidentally cracked a twig and the mouse dropped it's berry, darting for the bush. Quick as a snake, Shadepaw flashed out and bit the mouse. Not the best killing bite- but he wasn't perfect. He dropped the mouse for Streamtail to see, flicking his tail in satisfaction. He hoped he did it right!

(We have a system here on WCC called the hunting system. If you go to the home page it’ll tell you everything about it. The dice decides if your character gets the prey. Please check that out first, and then you can edit your post. I wouldn’t know what to write if Shadepaw got the prey before Streamtail showed him how.)
