Hunting Or A Contest?

Ravenmist waited at the camp entrance for her apprentices. Today would be a hunting lesson for Boulderpaw, and good practice for the other two. With any luck, her idea would make it some fun for them all, putting it into the form of a contest.

Breifly, she mused on the three young toms and their differences. Emberpaw was eager, outspoken, and extroverted. Smokepaw was a bit quieter, but very vocal in his beliefs and very loyal to his Clan. Boulderpaw was the youngest, but clearly eager to learn, with a wisdom that surpassed his moons. All three were fine students, and she was sure the trio would grow to serve their Clan well.

It was a newleaf day, and the pine trees only allowed a few slices of sunlight in, mixing with the shadows on the ground to create beautiful patterns, always changing, never the same. Emberpaw's amber gaze was focused on those patterns, disrupted by the shadow he cast. One of his paws dug into the ground idly, claws swiping at the marshy ground. He removed his paw from the ground, dark fur flecked with umber splotches. His marmalade gaze moved up, wide eyes settling on Ravenmist's scarred blue ones. Was she so oblivious to the fact that he and Smokepaw were bitter rivals, at best? Or maybe she was, and this was her way of trying to help them become a bit nicer towards eachother. No. He dismissed the thought with an airy toss of his head. If that was the purpose of this, Boulderpaw wouldn't be coming. This was likely for the single purpose of bringing prey back to their camp. There seemed to be nothing to say, so Emberpaw waited for the others to show up, eyes trailing back to the ground.
