another day [closed]

Another day, another opportunity to hunt. Wildpaw’s nose twitched, catching the scent of Clearpaw. She’d hunted with Sweetpaw yestreday, and it seemed only fair to do the same with Clearpaw. No doubt he’d want a warrior with them, though, and Olivestone was out. Her head lifted, turning towards the warrior’s den, and she trotted closer. Briarthorn was the first cat she scented, and Wildpaw would welcome a chance to get to know the warrior better. Plus, Briarthorn was probably related to her in some way. Smallbean had a lot of family.

The tawny apprentice’s ear twitched as she called out, “Briarthorn, if you aren’t busy, Clearpaw and I are hunting and we’d be grateful for a warrior with us.” Wildpaw straightened, turning around, and nearly crashed into the entrance of the den. She scowled and made her way back to Clearpaw, tapping his flank with her tail. “If you need to clear your mind, - heh, clear - I asked Briarthorn to come hunt with us.”

Clearpaw had actually been considering putting a hunting patrol together so he could practice when Wildpaw called out; it seems she had beat him to it. She volunteered him for a position on the patrol and his whiskers twitched. He didn't mind going on a patrol with her, but he would have preferred if she had asked him first instead of after. The lanky apprentice raised his head, gazing across camp at Briarthorn.

From what Clearpaw had seen from the gray tabby tom, Briarthorn wasn't...the nicest cat. He was honestly rather abrasive and arrogant, but first impressions sometimes weren't always accurate to cats' true personalities. He sighed softly and got to his paws. He would at least make an effort to be nice to the older warrior, and hopefully it would be returned. Wildpaw came over then and brushed his flank with her tail (he pretended not to notice her almost running into the gorse brush). "Sounds good," he mewed in response, slipping past Wildpaw out into the clearing of camp. "I'm ready whenever you two are."

Briarthorn looked up as one of Smallbean's kits walked up to him. What was his name again? Oh yeah, Wildpaw! Olivestone's most recent apprentice. He knew he was related to him somehow. "Sure! I'll come hunting with you!" Briarthorn got up and stretched, trying to remember how they were related. Let's see... Wildpaw's father is Smallbean, who's father is Crowspirit, who's mother is Goldengale, who's my half sister. So I am his great uncle. Or is it great-great uncle? I guess it doesn't really matter.

Briarthorn padded up to the two apprentices, who were waiting for him. "Well, were not going to catch anything here in camp. To the moor!" He walked towards and out of the camp entrance, stopping to gaze across the moor. He was about to set off on his own before he remembered that he was supposed to be supervising the two apprentices. I should probably stay near them, with Wildpaw being blind and all. So Briarthorn waited just outside the camp entrance for them.

The two seemed happy to go on the patrol (or, she thought so - with Clearpaw, it was hard to tell), and Wildpaw gave her tail a satisfied twitch, starting to take the lead, but shrinking back a little as Briarthorn took the front of the patrol. It made sense - he was a warrior - but it was still a little annoying. Wildpaw fell into step next to Clearpaw, content to walk in silence until Briarthorn found a good spot to hunt.

As the trio made their way out to the moors with Briarthorn leading the way, Clearpaw stuck close to Wildpaw to make sure she was okay. He assumed she was alright enough to travel through the moor-grass on her own, but it seemed rude to take chances on her when she was disabled like that. Clearpaw's stride was longer than Wildpaw's and even Briarthorn's, so he had to watch and make sure he wasn't walking too fast. A sigh of relief left the older apprentice's maw once they moved into the moor-grass; now he could hunt in relative peace. He brushed Wildpaw's back with his tail to show he was leaving before he slunk off through the grass away from the hunting patrol. Away from Briarthorn.

Honestly, the longer he was with that cat, the more the warrior rubbed him the wrong way. Clearpaw flicked his ears in annoyance at the thought but quickly turned his mind to hunting. He had to get his head in the right place, he didn't want to make a mistake. As silently as he could muster, he loped through the grasses, the scent of hare filing his nose. There must be one nearby...A few foxlengths away from him, there was a rustle. Clearpaw froze, peering over to spot a rather scrawny-looking hare. It would have to do. The lanky apprentice dropped into a hunting crouch, prepared to run if the hare took off. As he crept closer, his tail accidentally brushed into the grass, making a noise. Sure enough, the hare bolted and Clearpaw took off after it, stretching his long legs in a steady sprint. It felt so nice to be able to run like this...

One quick chase later, and Clearpaw had caught up to the hare. He pounced on it, landing squarely on its back with his claws digging deep into its flesh. The prey cried out in fear, right before he bit down hard on its neck to silence it. Mostly satisfied with his catch, he trotted back over to his patrol and hid the fresh-kill in a small hole to keep other predators from getting it.

Briarthorn watched as Clearpaw set off on his own to hunt. He waited until he returned to where Wildpaw was before setting off on his own. He smelled the air, looking for something to catch. It wasn't long until he scented a rabbit. It was nibbling some grass some foxlengths away. It looked well fed, and it was just begging to be caught. He got downwind of it, creeping up slowly. Only one foxlength away... Just a taillength... Briarthorn pounced onto the unsuspecting rabbit, sinking his claws into it. Once it stopped moving, he proudly brought it back to where the patrol was. He placed it under a gorse bush, and turned to face Wildpaw. How would he hunt without his sight?

Her companions had caught their chosen prey. Wildpaw's fur started to bristle involuntarily. She felt as if there were loads of pressure dumped upon her to do the same, so she sucked in a deep breath and pricked her ears, nose twitching for a sign of anything. A rustle of densly tangled gorse caught her attention, and her eyes widened hopefully as a whiff of pigeon followed. Birds were harder to catch, but letting this one go would be a waste. Even if she failed, she'd tried. Wildpaw crouched down, tail lifted slightly off the ground, and stalked towards the bird. As soon as she felt she was close enough to start running openly, she did so, streaking slighty downwards, claws extended to catch the bird. Fate was not on her side, and as her paws pattered down, the pigeon squawked forcefully and lifted off of the ground, hovering in the air for a second as if to say You thought a blind cat could hunt me? Hah! Ears flattening, Wildpaw returned to the group, twitching tail the only sign of her anger.
