Snowkit's Apprentice Ceremony

Already by the third apprentice she was doing a ceremony for things seemed a little bit brighter in the camp. Maybe it was the passage of time or maybe it was the fact that these young cats were able to bring up the energy of those around them. Regardless things were looking better.

The deputy quickly jumped up to the Willow Branch before calling out. "Let all cats old enough to swim gather beneath Willow Branch for a clan meeting!"

Another day, another meeting. As usual, it wasn’t the call itself that drew Snowkit’s attention, but RiverClan surging toward the Willow Branch like their namesake. He raised his head to see Stormbringer perched on top of the branch. Huh. Maybe he was biased—no matter what position she held or how many scars she had, she would’ve won his loyalty simply by taking him out of camp—but she looked like she fit up there. Snowkit stood on tiptoe to search the ground beneath the branch. No more Torrentstars. Maybe this was a good meeting; most of them had been.

Today’s grooming (courtesy of Lightsong) had been extra thorough. Still, after he’d made himself comfortable, the tom-kit fussed with a patch of fur on his tail, ruffling and smoothing it in rhythm. His right ear remained angled toward Stormbringer.

She had taken one apprentice already but another wouldn't hurt. There weren't as many warriors as there was before. "Today another kit is to be named an apprentice. Snowkit please come forward." Once the white cat had moved forward Stormbringer's voice filled the silence again. "Snowkit from this moment on, until you earn your warrior name, you will be known as Snowpaw. K will mentor you along side Tawnypaw." She had watched the kits play along with Curlpaw, and it would do some good for the two to be trained together.

Another new apprentice? Galekit, probably. Some of the light drained out of Snowkit’s eyes, then, though he didn’t move from where he’d sat. Curlpaw, Tawnypaw, and all of his older siblings were already apprentices. Before long, the nursery would be empty, and he’d be stuck there all by himself—

Wait. Had that been his name? It was always so difficult to be sure…except for now, because it felt as if all of RiverClan had turned to look at him. Surprise dawned across his face, followed by an uncharacteristically tiny smile. As he stepped forward, he glanced over his shoulder in search of his littermate’s black-spotted pelt. Despite Galekit’s sharp, ambitious attitude, Snowkit loved him, of course, they were brothers—but he had to admit there was some satisfaction in being apprenticed before him. And to the deputy! To Stormbringer!

Half of him wanted to tear through the crowd in search of Tawnypaw, his denmate twice over and his soon-to-be training partner; half wanted him to dart toward his new mentor. RiverClan called what he knew to be his name, though pulling syllables out of the noise was all but impossible. For the sake of hearing it in his own voice, Snowpaw murmured along with them, ”Snow-paw! Snow-paw!”
