| Silver tendrils of afternoon light slipped through a cloudy sky. The river whispered gently as it flowed by the smooth rocks at it’s banks. Warblings of ice as it cracked and shifted during gentle waves that were disturbed by prey caught the attention of the large, dark tabby tom who parted the long icy grasses at the border. A border long guarded by RiverClan with blood.
Oakstar settled his large tabby bulk on the center of the rocks. The smooth cold surface chilled the pads of his paws. His amber eyes watched the edge of the territory with a calm and relaxed expression. He trusted Torrentstar. That the tom would meet him face to face, as they had met on many other occasions. Though he wondered, if he would bring company this time.
The idea wasn’t unappealing, but Oakstar frowned a bit in worry. Not every cat in RiverClan would likely accept what he was about to suggest. Neither would some cats in ThunderClan, yet they would starve eventually if they couldn’t get more hunting grounds. The sleek RiverClan cats could always rely on fish, but Oakstar knew his clanmates needed the wooded prey that sheltered along the banks.

| The paws that carried Torrentstar forward that afternoon were heavier than ever. He wished that he could have simply remained within camp. In fact, he had almost done so. Only one thing had held him back, and that had been the agreement he had made with ThunderClan's leader the night before. With the chaos that had ensued that Gathering, it would be easy to give Oakstar the excuse that he had forgotten about their meeting. The large tabby had been tempted―oh, so tempted. But his character opposed such a course of action. Filthy hypocrite that he was, standing in the ashes of his own ruin, he would still honor his word. Nothing was certain anymore.
Thus it came to be, that as Oakstar sat waiting on Sunningrocks, the reeds eventually parted to reveal the broad-shouldered RiverClan leader on the other side of the river. "Greetings, Oakstar..." The younger tom began, before he trailed off. Despite the effort he put into maintaining his usual cold demeanor, the weariness in his eyes betrayed him. |

| Oakstar’s head lifted as he heard Torrentstar’s greeting. His tail flicked in response as he waited for the other leader to reach him before he responded with a polite dip of his head. "Greetings Torrentstar… I hope you did not have trouble in camp last night." He frowned, looking at his friend carefully. The tom, so much younger than him, seemed a lot more worn out. His amber eyes softened in sympathy. To take a mate in another clan is difficult for a warrior… but for a leader, for two leaders, it seemed an impossible idea.
He wrenched his mind away from those concerns. It was not his place to speak in those affairs. They were between the leaders and clans in question… it wasn’t his job to get in the middle of it. His stomach pinched, a painful reminder to his goal. "Torrentstar… how many lives have these rocks stolen?" He asked, his gaze resting on the smooth, icy stones before them. Snow crusted in the cracks, and ice filled the river. When he had first arrived in Thunderclan, it had been immediately after a large battle was fought for these rocks. Thunderclan had lost, and come home a cat or two short.
"It’s pointless to fight." His voice dropped to a growl of disdain. "Why did our forebears insist on fighting over a resource we could so easily share. Thunderclan is not a clan of fishing like yours. Riverclan can reap the benefits of the river with ease, just as we can hunt on land more efficiently." His gaze lifted back to Torrentstar once more. He let it settle there, a steady weight as he spoke. "I wish to propose a simple truce. Let Riverclan and Thunderclan share these infamous rocks." His head lifted to the canopy of bare branches above them. "Perhaps, we can do so in shifts. Riverclan can have hunting rights from sunhigh to moonhigh, the center branch can be the judge." He looked back down at Torrentstar. "What do you think, my friend?" ______________________________________ Kestrelkit ♀ Marshkit ♂ |

| Oakstar's well-intentioned inquiry prompted only a soft grunt from the RiverClan leader. Well... he was only a leader in name now. After the incidents of the previous night, which RiverClan cat in their right mind would still follow his orders? All but the nine lives of leadership had been given to Ivybrook. He was simply waiting now―waiting for StarClan to judge him. It was odd. After he had spent so much of his life hating the starry ancestors, he no longer had any fight left in him. Perhaps something had broken within him when Mossbloom had shared the news.
"Oakstar..." He began slowly, when the older tabby had finally finished with his proposal. "If I refuse, will you go to war with us? You know better than anyone else; the blood runs black between our two clans. Can you even prove to RiverClan that ThunderClan trustworthy?" If he had been his usual self, the words would have been full of fire. But now his eyes were dead, like a cat that had no hope left, and his tone was more empty than anything else. Devastation itself was etched in his features. |
