Light Follows Darkness Empty

Dappleshine had thought she knew all she would need to know for her pregnancy. What she failed to note, however, was how many moons it had been since she had birthed Dacedream, the tiny mewling kit she had so carefully named Dacekit. The memory seemed so distant now, but her eyes softened and she was content in the warm, pleasant memory. Torrentstar and Thornstar both had been present, the cats who had taken her in and nourished her, guided her. Neither were here now, and one of them had turned his back on her completely. This kitting would happen in a much different place than her first, surrounded by those who never would have seen her first pregnancy. Something felt slightly different this time, was the kit bigger than Dacepaw had been? Was there more than one? Dappleshine had no way to tell, but she could swear that she would feel nudges on both sides of her belly, making it difficult to sleep, stand, or even sit without feeling like some tiny kits were trying to push her already swollen belly even father.

As the sun rose that morning, she watched it from near the entrance to camp, taking comfort in the quiet hours of the morning. The moors were so quiet, compared to RiverClan's camp, with no nearby river constantly babbling as it coursed around the camp it seemed so... Empty. After the chaos of the previous moons though, the silver queen would happily accept the silence over the screeches of terror and hisses of pain. Wincing at a sudden kick, she curled in on herself as the pressure quickly increased before finally subsiding, the sudden cramp catching her off-guard. "Now?" She whispered, swallowing hard as she slowly uncurled herself and shakily sat up, casting a glance to the sky. The first rays of light were just starting to peek over the horizon, and she looked towards her belly. "You can't wait just a little longer? Aspenheart will have my whiskers for waking him so earl-" Doubling over and coughing as another pang of pain shot through her body, she groaned. "Fine, my loves, impatient as you are. I can take a hint."

Standing up on wobbly paws, she half-stumbled, half-waddled to where Aspenheart was sleeping. Reaching out a tentative paw, she gently poked his flack with it, staying as far back as possible. All of WindClan was jumpy after the series of attacks, the last thing she wanted was to upset the medicine cat she desperately needed. She also didn't want to wake the whole camp, if at all possible.... But as another wave of agony washed over her body a high-pitched whine escaped her throat without permission. Nudging the medicine cat again, a little firmer this time, she gasped out. "Aspenheart, it's time...." Her blue eyes searched for the sleeping body of her mate Raventail, and she waddled over to him and roughly licked his ears and head, trying to will the next wave of pain away for just a moment longer. "My love, it's almost time." Turning to waddle away to the nursery and climbing into the nest she had made many sunrises ago, she settled in to wait for her mate and medicine cat, paws curling with every ache as she buried her head in the side of her nest, biting her tongue to try to silence her pain.

Light Follows Darkness Empty
PostSubject: Re: Light Follows Darkness   Light Follows Darkness Icon_minitimeMon Jan 06, 2020 9:33 pm

All his life, with the exception of the few sunups between losing Brookclover and losing Murkpaw, Raventail had been inclined to wander. It was part of what bound him to Finchstar, part of the reason he’d been able to reunite with Dappleshine; part of why he had everything he had now, and part of why he’d almost lost it. Still, somehow, he’d never realized just how much time he spent away from camp. Now, from the moment his nose poked out of the exit tunnel to the moment the end of his tail entered the camp, he could nearly hear the minutes ticking away in his absence. But his paws were not permitted to settle; it wasn’t in his nature, for one thing, and for another, WindClan needed fresh-kill. Leaf-bare wouldn’t soften its chill for kits, regardless of their number or importance. Thus, Raventail left the borders to his ever-capable Clanmates and continued to hunt far closer to home. (Almost too close to catch much of anything, really. What mattered was that he brought back something every time—and, of course, that he was within sprinting distance of camp.)

Though his patrols didn’t take him half as far, he fell into his nest every night roughly as exhausted as usual. With the beasts growing further by the day, he was slowly remembering how to rest. Small things still woke him too easily, but it never took long for him to drift off again. Today was no different. The absence of Dappleshine’s pelt beside him vaguely registered… Then someone was licking his ears. ”Dapple…?” Wearing a half-asleep, slightly confused smile, Raventail twisted to blink upward at his mate—there was no one else it could be. ”Almost?” he echoed.

At last, her words broke through the fog. His eyes shot open. ”Oh,” he said as Dappleshine waddled toward the nursery. Oh.” Almost time. Almost time, and—and he was here. He would be here. Why that fear had stuck with him despite all the stories he’d heard, he couldn’t be sure; there was no explaining it, only relief mingling with nerves. He wouldn’t miss his kits’ first breaths. Dappleshine wouldn’t have to go through this alone. After everything he’d done to ensure he would be within reach… It was worth it.

With his biggest worry gone, nothing remained to stop the others from creeping in. He remembered the SkyClanners’ kit; he remembered Finchstar’s story from a lifetime ago. But when he reached further, he remembered others: Barleytuft and Graybriar, Goldengale, Leaftwirl, Dappleshine herself. They’ll be fine, he thought, and believed it. We’ll be fine. The dark-furred tom picked himself up and hurried toward the nursery. ”I’m here,” he meowed as he entered, keeping close to the den’s walls. Dappleshine had hidden her face in her nest; her twitching paws were very visible. He leaned down and licked her ear once, gently, wincing in sympathy. ”Does Aspenheart know?” So saying, he stretched to peer out at the camp, quiet as it could only be by morning light. Somewhere in that quiet, he was certain he’d heard the medicine cat stirring. Raventail stepped back, shifting his weight from side to side, eyes on Dappleshine once again. Excitement and fear tumbled together inside him; the idea of relaxing enough to sit was unthinkable.

Aspenheart snorted as Dappleshine prodded him once, twice. When his eyes finally adjusted to the low light, he recognized the terrible situation that had befallen him. Of course it had to happen this early. Those kits had better thank him that he didn't just leave them to find their way out on his own! "Alrigh', hold on, 'm goin'," he mumbled as he shook out his pelt in a futile attempt to wake himself up. He half-jogged, half-stumbled to the medicine den and snatched up the herbs he had at the ready for Dappleshine's kitting.

Raventail had joined his mate in the nursery, which was trouble. He was a nervous wreck, and his queen didn't need all that extra stress. "Oh, you're definitely not going to want to be in here for this, buddy!" he said, though muffled by herbs. He placed them on the ground by Dappleshine's maw, along with a stick. "I mean... if you're that determined, then stay. But if I pass out, you're catching me! Dappleshine, bite the stick when it hurts. Okay? Okay. Let's go!" Aspenheart placed himself at Dappleshine's flank, licking her scruff and watching carefully for the first kit. The condition it came in was usually a decent indicator for the health of the rest of the litter, and he couldn't take any more heartbreak...

Raventail didn't take long to emerge behind her, she could hear and scent his arrival even as her head remained buried in the moss of her nest. She let out a sigh as the pain subsided, raising teary eyes to nod to her mate. "Yes, I woke him. He's gonna have my whiskers, I just know it." Reaching up to lick Raventail's cheek, she tensed again as the pain returned just as Aspenheart moved into the den. As it started to ebb away after what felt like moons, her ears lifted to catch the last of Aspenheart's words. Nodding breathlessly, she braced herself for what she knew was to come. She had already done this once, what was one more? With a groan, her legs stretched as far as they could as the first kit came into the world, a stunning calico pattern adorning her pelt.

Dappleshine started to relax, bring her legs in towards her body as she prepared to welcome her kit into the world when another pang rippled through her body and she gasped, confused and shocked. Her first birth had only one kit, and she had no reason to have thought this one would be any different - now she thought about it though she supposed it was entirely possible. Letting out a whimper, she pushed once, twice, thrice more before the second tiny she-kit entered the nursery of WindClan, a pretty marbling of white, gray, and black fur. Finally, it was over. Turning to look at her kits, then her mate, she brought them in towards her belly with a gentle webbed paw, ushering them to her warmth. The stick lay forgotten and unused nearby, and all that the queen could see was her kits and her mate. If only Dacedream were here, the family would be complete.

Sure enough, Aspenheart wobbled into the den mere moments after Raventail’s question with a stick, a mouthful of herbs Raventail couldn’t identify, and a warning. At the last of these, Raventail blinked. Leave? Now? He’d seen a kitting once before…from a considerable distance, through a crowd of medicine cats and SkyClanners. Maybe it was different up close. Still, as he shuffled to give Aspenheart space, every inch of him remained firmly within the nursery, even at Aspenheart’s next comment. Raventail half-exhaled, half-laughed. ”Better stay on my paws then, right?” He paused. Please don’t pass out.” Then Dappleshine tensed again, and Raventail forgot about Aspenheart.

In time, a single she-kit arrived. Patches of black, white, and startlingly bright orange dotted her thin pelt. Raventail stared. There was nothing else to do, really. His kit. Their kit. Already, a list of names whirled about between his ears. For a heartbeat, Dappleshine relaxed, and he followed suit. Her confusion sent a jolt of alarm straight to his stomach. Abruptly remembering Aspenheart, he glanced upward—but as it turned out, nothing was wrong. Quite the opposite: another kit appeared, scruffy and mottled like her sister, only in black and white. Raventail’s eyes shone.

After that, the bulk of the pain seemed to ease. It was over. They were okay. He sank down for all of a second; then he leaned closer. Tightly-shut eyes, folded-over ears. Small, fuzzy, and fragile-looking. And breathing. Would they have Dappleshine’s selfless heart or his wandering spirit? Were their paws webbed like Dappleshine’s? Would they run as fast as him someday? So many possibilities wrapped up in two bundles of fur so tiny he could probably lift both of them at once.

Dappleshine tucked them against her. Raventail raised his head, searching until his eyes found hers. The idea of running across the camp, yowling the news to anyone who would listen, crossed his mind, followed by the equally noisy idea of bursting into Finchstar’s den and personally dragging him to the nursery. Both of those involved leaving the nursery, however, and so Raventail discarded them. WindClan would find out soon. Dacedream would get to meet her sisters. Outside, the rest of the world waited. ”They’re good,” he said softly, feeling mouse-brained for having nothing better to say and being too overjoyed to care. They were good. He loved them. He hardly knew them, and he loved them. ”They’re perfect, Dappleshine, I… What should we name them?”

ooc; mobile
ic;
Warmth, followed by a sudden onslaught of cold. The black and white she-kit shrieked in distress, her high-pitched mewls a testament to her discomfort. Immediately after she began screeching at the top of her little kitten lungs, something warm wrapped itself around her and pulled her closer to even more warmth. Immediately, her maw shut, and she allowed herself to sink into what she assumed was her mother’s fluffy coat. This peace was short lived: suddenly, there was an emptiness in her belly and her new mission was to find food. The newborn she-kit began clambering around, rudely climbing over her sister to find the best spot to nurse. Once she was comfortable, the black and white kitten kneaded her mother’s belly and nurses until she was content. Finally warm and full, she relaxed, content and purring.
