At first, Frostpaw had a sinking suspicion that she had been right. Food was scarce, and she often had to venture far into the grass to find anything worth catching. It seemed that they were the only creatures foolish enough to travel so openly on the Thunderpath.
It wasn't like they weren't cautious- At first, every time Lynxtail felt the distant rumble of an approaching monster or Frostpaw's keen ears heard their howls, they would scurry off the Thunderpath and into the grass and they'd wait, completely still, until the monster passed. However, Frostpaw noticed that Lynxtail was beginning to lose his fear of monsters. He'd wait until Frostpaw's warning to move off the Thunderpath, and even then he continued to walk in the ditch beside it, the breeze left in the monster's wake ruffling his thin pelt.

Frostpaw understood his desire to reach Twolegplace. After two days of nothing except golden fields of grass, she began to wonder if they'd moved at all since stepping onto the Thunderpath. The only way she could tell that they were making some progress was by watching the clouds. Their steady, constant movement across the sky kept pace with them, and she'd spend hours staring up into the pale blue sky, memorizing their every detail, each minute curve and wisp of fog, until Lynxtail stopped walking and the clouds passed by.

Before the sun had risen on the third day of travel, as the sky had just faded into a soft grey-blue, Frostpaw peered pensively through the fog that had settled in the ditch by the Thunderpath and noticed a barely-visible silhouette on the horizon.
She blinked, squeezing her green eye shut and staring through the fog, tracing the outline over and over again, trying to determine if it was real.
Lynxtail emerged from the grass with two mice in his jaws, and Frostpaw waited for him to notice the buildings on the horizon. When he didn't, she felt a jolt of worry. Was it really there in the first place? Should she risk telling Lynxtail and giving him false hope?
She grappled with her decision while she ate, and spent most of the time staring intently at the horizon.

Lynxtail's ears twitched. "Do you see something?" He mewed, turning behind him to peer into the mist. Frostpaw shook her head. "I... I don't know," She said. That much was true, at least.
Lynxtail nodded, getting to his feet. "We should get moving," He said. "Today's the day, I can feel it."

Frostpaw waited eagerly for the sun to rise and burn away the fog. The minutes seemed to crawl by, and she found herself staring at the strange grey stone beneath her. It was different than the Thunderpath that cut through the forest: this one was much larger, and more pungent. The monsters here had claimed far more lives than the ones that roamed near the Clans. She could smell it on them as they passed, beneath the heavy scent of metal and Twoleg.

Suddenly, she felt Lynxtail's pace quicken. She glanced up from the Thunderpath to see a large rolling hill, and beneath it, a great, sprawling Twolegplace with miniature Twoleg nests dotting the landscape and small, shiny beetle-like monsters crawling on Thunderpaths, catching the light and glinting tantalizingly.
"I knew it," Frostpaw grinned, although she felt more scared than pleased. Twolegplace meant one thing: Twolegs, with great shiny traps and small, cramped cages. The dark apprentice felt her throat close, her breathing grew shallower. Traps that would catch her and never let go, not until she chewed her leg to a stump.

Lynxtail set her down, peering into her eyes for a moment. "Do you know what this means, Frostpaw?"
He turned towards Twolegplace, his eyes bright. "We're on our way home."
