| "Let all cats old enough to climb a tree gather beneath the Tallbranch for a Clan meeting!" It was time for a warrior ceremony that was long overdue. Spottedstar looked over the clan, scanning their faces for Swanpaw. She had proven her value time and time again, and the leader would reward her patience with a name and rank that she deserved. Feeling a bit excited after the past few moons of restlessness, Spottedstar settled neatly onto his branch with his tail tucked over his paws. ______________________________________ Sun // Living Characters // Deceased Characters

| The tree towered above, its branches jutting out into the cold sky above and swaying with a breeze Swanpaw's fur didn't catch from where she lay huddled next to a bush. A sudden call brought her eyes down from the icy blue sky above, and to Spottedstar's form sitting on the Tallbranch. The memory of the recent deputy ceremony came to her mind, and for a moment she wondered if maybe Foxfire had decided he wanted to take it up again. I don't think he would do that....
From Spottedstar's tone, it didn't sound like anything bad, so maybe another kit was about to join the apprentice den. At any rate, Swanpaw got to her paws, padding across the clearing to join the gathering cats below the tree, her eyes curiously looking about for the cause of the meeting as her ears twisted at her Clanmates' quiet conversations. Maybe... maybe one day she would be able to join them. For now, she turned her attention to Spottedstar on the branch, her ears pricked slightly. ______________________________________ |

| "We gather here today to give one of our apprentices their warrior name and rank. Swanpaw has proven herself worthy to climb the ranks of SkyClan and receive her warrior name." Spottedstar considered the apprentice before him. She, like Beanhert, was far too old for her apprentice title. How had he allowed his clanmates to slip through the cracks like this? They deserved better from him. He resolved to make sure none of his clanmates ever got left behind like Swanpaw had. "Step forth, Swanpaw." Spottedstar allowed her time to move forward from the crowd before moving on. "I, Spottedstar, SkyClan's leader, call upon our ancestors to look down on this apprentice. She has trained hard to understand the ways of your noble code, and I commend her to you as a warrior in her turn. Swanpaw, do you promise to uphold the warrior code and to protect and defend your clan, even at the cost of your life?" ______________________________________ Sun // Living Characters // Deceased Characters

| Oh. Swanpaw's ears relaxed as Spottedstar spoke, not a small amount of relief washing across her pelt. A warrior ceremony. We haven't had one of those for while. He head tilted slightly as she glanced around for the apprentices inevitably gathered somewhere in the crowd. I wonder who it is?"Swanpaw has proven herself worthy to climb the ranks of SkyClan and receive her warrior name." Her ears, relaxed and easy before, suddenly twitched of their own accord, swiveling to catch Spottedstar's words, and the name he announced. S...Swanpaw? Vaguely, she registered that her mouth had fallen open slightly, the sudden shock hitting her like the chill of snow on a leaf-bare's morning. "M-me?" The whisper passed her maw involuntarily as her wide eyes looked up her leader. She felt almost like the world had suddenly turned upside down, the chilly air numb all of a sudden. It was a wonder she heard him as he called the next part of the ceremony. Blinking, she hesitantly got to her paws, still half-wondering if she'd heard him wrong as she padded the seemingly endless distance to the front of the crowd, and Spottedstar's leaderly gaze came to bear fully upon her. This feels like a dream.... But her ears still caught his words, spoken in perfect clarity, and her voice caught in her throat, a sudden lump holding back her reply. - Ten Heartbeats:
"I.... Amberdawn, do you... do you think I'm ready for this? I... I'm not sure I can be the warrior everyone wants me to be...."
Her own voice floated back to her from her memory, almost as sharp as the day she'd gone on her moonstone journey. The question - the one she had struggled to answer, struggled to face. And now the day had come. Suddenly, the doubts flooded back, all of the times she'd failed - failed to be there, failed to help, failed to be anything but a failure. Memories of friends lost - Amberdawn's face as she set a bundle of herbs at Swanpaw's feet, even after her heartfelt defense of her father, and the golden she-cat's tail as it trailed out of camp for the last time. Of Leaftwirl's bloodstained body - the bubbly she-cat coming back only to die at the paws of a ShadowClan tom Swanpaw hadn't been there to face. Broken bodies she'd never known, tearstained faces she couldn't comfort.
I... can't do this. How could she be what they needed? How could she - she who had failed so many times before - be the warrior she was meant to?
The answer came on the wings of memory. "You get to choose what sort of warrior you will become. No one else - not your kin, or your Clanmates, or even our ancestors."
Slowly, a light began to dawn in her mind, things she'd forgotten coming back to her. Silver light seemed to shine around her in her imagination, a beautiful she-cat with a gentle smile looking down at her, blue eyes pooled with wisdom and knowledge as the silver tabby's pure, soft but firm voice whispered through Swanpaw's ears again.
“Just remember, my kit…nothing is free in this life. You have to fight for your dreams. Even if you fail a thousand times, it’s very important for you to get up and try again. The moment you lose hope? The moment you give up? That is the moment you know you’ve been truly defeated.”
I... I....
More memory swept past; her determination to keep her dreams alive, to not lose hope, to be better.
How... How did I forget?
“Just look at you…so strong and ready to become a great warrior. You make me so proud, my kit…."
Her eyes filled with tears as the memory of her mother's sweet voice drifted past her ears. I lost my way, my hope. I forgot.
"...Each time you feel alone, each time you feel you have nobody at your side and you fear all hope is lost…look at the sky, look at the stars. We will never turn our backs on you, Swanpaw…we promise."
As she looked up at Spottedstar, her eyes slid past to a small patch of clear blue peeking through the leaves, like blue eyes smiling down on her. In that moment, she saw it all: the path she had traveled, sometimes tear-stained and weary, but still with those wise pools gazing down on her. Not with condemnation, but love and encouragement. Oh Mother, oh StarClan. I'm sorry... so sorry.... Even with all of her mother's wise words, she had still lost her way.
But now, now she was given a chance to move on, to become the cat her mother had seen inside of her.
With wetness still in her eyes, Swanpaw turned her gaze back to Spottedstar, her voice ringing out louder than she had ever used it outside of Sparrowpaw and Tinystar's trial. "I do." ______________________________________ |

| Swanpaw was freezing up. It hadn't happened in Spottedstar's time as leader or deputy, but there had been a few cats before that were especially shy or afraid at their ceremonies. He looked down at her, neutral expression becoming concerned. What would he do if she couldn't - or wouldn't - say yes? Was she okay down there? Her distant gaze slipped past him, staring into something the leader couldn't see. He glanced sideways, asking an unspoken 'Now what?' to Sagelight as he caught his brother's eye, but then Swanpaw's voice rose loud from the clearing below. Her sudden power and intesnity was startling, but certainly a relief. Spottedstar smiled at Swanpaw before continuing. This kind of resolve was rare and honorable.
"Then by the powers of StarClan, I am proud to give you your warrior name. Swanpaw, from this day on you will be named Swansong. SkyClan is blessed to have a warrior with your kind of patience and steadfastness." He nodded as he spoke, apparently agreeing with his own assessment. He jumped to the ground from the Tallbranch, landing with practiced ease, and approached her to rest his muzzle on her head. ______________________________________ Sun // Living Characters // Deceased Characters

| Spottedstar smiled at her in the sudden thudding of her heart, and she suddenly found herself second-guessing the reality of the world around her. Is this just a dream? Shaking the thought off, she stood under his gaze as he opened his mouth. For a moment she stood beneath him, nameless, stripped of everything she'd ever known, and suddenly - however hesitantly - eager to step into a new day. "Swanpaw, from this day on you will be named Swansong."Swansong. Her name was Swansong. A breath in, a moment to contemplate in the moment of disorientation. Yes, yes this truly was real. Her leader leapt down from the branch above, a couple of padding steps bringing him in front of her, his muzzle coming to rest on her head. She felt the faint stir of his breath on her ears, the light breeze playing over her fur, the smell of the pines - of her Clanmates - the feel of the earth under her paws, and the broken sunlight warming her pelt. Sudden cheers broke the air, and she looked up - startled - as Spottedstar stepped back, her eyes widening slightly as she looked over the crowd, her ears twisted back slightly. Are they... are they calling my name?"Swansong! Swansong!" I... A hesitant smile grew up onto her maw, lighting her eyes as she stood, looking around at her Clanmates. Her family. I am a warrior.I am Swansong. ______________________________________ |
