these ghosts that i chase [solo] Empty

It was another sleepless night outside the barn for Batbite. She'd slept soundly for a time - well, as soundly as she ever had - but she felt herself growing restless once more. Her paws itched to feel something new, as the newness and novelty of life at the barn began to fade. She was started to feel as she'd felt in the Clans, but without laws and codes to blame for the way her paws itched to run. She had started to think she was getting to be too complacent... But now she felt the opposite.

She ventured far, some days. As far as she could go while still making it back to the barn at the end of the day. Still, she couldn't seem to find contentment with it any longer.

The restlessness came in different forms - a trick of the light, the shape of a ghost in the corner of her eye; a far-off star that caught her attention; rippling reflections in the water. Anything and everything was a sign, a shadow; something she needed to chase after in order to catch and understand.

There's a whole world out there, and I've still only seen such a small part of it!

The mountains she knew, from the aftermath of the flood. A part of her wondered how Chirp was doing in the Tribe, and from there how Ferretnose was faring back in ThunderClan. But she quickly brushed those thoughts aside. ThunderClan and the Tribe, Ferret and Chirp, they were familiar enough to her. But there was a lake the other cats spoke of, saying they'd washed up on its shore. Maybe she could search for it.

Strom was here, though, and she couldn't expect him to follow her on a journey so far from home. She wouldn't go alone, not this time. She thought of her brothers, and wondered if something had happened to them in her absence. Wouldn't someone have told her? She told both of them, and she even told Oakstar...

Oakstar. Her former mentor. He had given his blessing, an allowance for her to wander, and for that she was grateful. But to turn her back on everything she'd ever known, even when she held it at a distance as she did now... Could she?

She felt happier without the warrior code to weigh her down, this was true. A part of her, though, still held tight to the name of the Clans. She kept her warrior name, though she had no alternative to rely on as Strom did. Bat was a nickname, but her name was Batbite.

A warrior name.

The name her father had given her.

Glancing up at the starry sky, she wondered if Leopardstar could see her now. If she was disappointing him somehow. Did he think it was a mistake, to take her in along with her siblings? As far as she knew, they were still loyal warriors, working to serve their Clan.

If her brothers hated her, as she thought they had when she left. She was just like their mother after all, it seemed. Worse, perhaps, as she'd left when the wound of Leopardstar's death was still fresh in everyone's minds.

She'd always thought of Oakstar as a father figure as well. But she'd left him too, when he wasn't just her teacher but her leader. How could she claim for herself the name of warrior even now?

(The only service she'd ever done them, really, was to leave.)

Her thoughts cycled back to Strom then. Had they remained in the Clans, forever dissatisfied with their lives, she would likely have never acknowledged her feelings. She had kept away from thoughts of romance with cats of other Clans, less for the sake of the code than for the sake of her kin. But here, beyond their borders... There was no such thing to keep her from happiness.

So why did she still feel incomplete? Was she destined to never be satisfied with any one decision?

Memories flooded her mind, in no particular order: Ferret catching her when she was putting cave beetles in her nest at the Tribe. Her and Lynx returning from the Twolegplace, and Copper being there to greet them. Meeting Strom and the others at the Gathering after they returned home. The time she'd accidentally started a fight with a thornbush and wound up in the medicine den, seeking Mossbloom's assistance and fearing Pricklebush's wrath. Wasppaw, and how she'd called SkyClan's leader a stubby little apprentice.

To turn her back on the Clans completely would mean leaving behind each and every one of those memories, and the cats within. It would mean leaving behind everything she'd ever known, but more importantly, everything she'd ever loved.

She wasn't strong enough.

(Then again, she never was.)

But she couldn't keep living her life like this, chasing every shadow that seemed to call to her. Tricks of the light were no basis for a life, she knew that now that she'd tried it. That left the question of what she was meant to do now. If she didn't want to run, and didn't want to stay... What other options did she have?

There was still one place she could go. Oakstar had not exiled her, after all... In her heart, perhaps there was still a place for ThunderClan; and in ThunderClan, perhaps there was still a place for her.

The ghosts that haunted her now were still living cats, after all. Perhaps it was time to face them once more, as the warrior she had become.

She'd have to speak to Strom first. If he wouldn't leave, neither would she. She'd come to value him too much to leave him behind. She'd already abandoned everything else, broken every other bond. This was the last thing she had, and the one thing she was determined to protect at any cost.

(Perhaps she'd still feel incomplete, but she was certain she would feel that way whatever choice she made. At least this one gave her the chance to see her family again, whether they wanted her back or not.)
