ooc note;; this topic is set to take place in camp during/at the end of the the current plot topic, dust in your pocket, and should only be answered by cats not with the fighting patrol OR by those members when their part in the topic has been concluded

For the most part, it was quiet here. From the depths of the medicine cat's den, the bicolored tom peered from the strewn together nest. In this peace, he paws sought to fidget and run. However, the twisted paw condemned him to this space. Arcayus was not used to stopping. In his older age, he had grown accustomed to the constant flight. And for the first time, that had become an impossibility. After he had attempted to run from Windclan, Elmskip had found him with one paw in the moors and a pain through his leg. Together, the two of them had made it back to camp underneath the stillness of the cool night air. He doubted that any cat knew of his his attempt to leave other than the kind warrior whose raw voice pleaded him back in a way he could not refuse. It wasn't just the injury that prevented his desire to run. No, Elmskip had drawn him up and pulled him back to camp. Perhaps it was indeed safer this way, at least for now. But there was a lingering discomfort that he knew the aching in his chest for companionship was now becoming untamable. That terrified him far more than it excited him. The concept of living among other cats once again was overwhelming, frightening, especially since he had not done so for many seasons.

Rolling to his side, the tom found his footing on three paws once again. However, even hopping with such an unusual gait jarred his healing paw. Aspenheart had attended to it and thankfully it was healing far quicker than he had imagined. The clan medicine cats did seem to have an extensive herb knowledge which was unmatched by most groups the Oasis had known of outside of its own borders.

As he peered into the soft light of day, concern crossed his maw. Although he rested in the heart of their camp, it seemed he was disconnected. There was something in the air. A disturbance seemed to trouble the cats of Windclan, but he had yet to find out what it was. Maybe Elmskip would let him know later, or the off-balanced medicine cat. Regardless, he was hesitant to step from the shallow dip of the medicine cat den that had provided him solace. For now, the concept of engaging with any strangers was disconcerting. But... the chirp of kits outside the den was a pleasant sound. He hadn't heard it in moons. To Arcayus, he had always loved kits. In his own youth, he had not been allowed to play with others of his age due to illness. But kits held an innocence and lack of fear to the greater world around them. He supposed that he admired this. Even if it was unrealistic, maybe they would never lose that edge and still grow into big strong cats. Like Artemis. Like Marie. Like Titus. His eyes squeezed shut as he remembered his family. For a moment it almost felt like they were there, sitting behind him and supporting him like they always had. He did know they were somewhere up in the skies, looking down on him. But how far did the Oasis skies run? And after everything... did they still desire to watch over him?

Elmskip had been pacing back and forth outside the medicine cats' den for what had seemed like moons, his lean frame tense with fear and worry. He had been delegated to stay behind at the camp to protect it; while arguably an important job, he couldn't help but feel like he was being punished. He wanted to go and kill those mangy beasts just as much as the rest of them, why didn't he get to go? And what was happening out there to his friends, his family? The tortoiseshell tom's hackles raised at the thought as he paced. He couldn't bear the thought of seeing any of his Clanmates come back gravely injured, or what's worse, dead. Even Aspenheart and Mistystripe had gone to the front lines to help. The warrior's face scar tingled uncomfortably but he didn't stop in his walking. At this rate, he would wear a line into the ground from his repeated pawsteps.

He glanced over his shoulder to look at Patrick, who looked just as haggard as Elmskip felt. It felt selfish, but he was grateful for the tom's presence, even though he was in pain from his twisted paw. Just having Patrick close made him relax a little, for whatever reason. He enjoyed the loner's company. The three-legged tom's paws began to ache so he finally stopped in his pacing, padding into the den for a break. He settled down next to Patrick, heaving a heavy sigh. Maybe he should talk a little, to get his mind off it. He opened his mouth to speak after a long stretch of silence, his stutter from his youth resurfacing from his nerves. "H-How...How are you f-faring? Is your paw feeling an-any better?" All the while, he kept his gaze on a swivel. Camp entrance, nursery, Patrick. Camp entrance, nursery, Patrick. When his gaze fell on Patrick, he got an inexplicable urge to press into the other's fur for comfort. They hardly knew each other, what was wrong with him? Idiot. You have more important things to think about than your silly kit-crush.

A wave of relief washed over the tom as Elmskip joined him. Once, he might have run at the thought of another cat approaching, and he still fought the desire to in the midst of this camp, but the three-legged warrior didn't stir any such emotion within him. In fact, something else was brought about, similar to the roots that anchored a tree to the earth. Arcayus managed a soft smile. While the stuttered words took a moment to gather, he reveled in them. But the concern resurfaced at a moment's notice. Perhaps something trouble the tom he was surprisingly quickly beginning to see as a friend. There had to be a reason for the stumbling, for the pacing, and for the tension that fell over the clan. A measured silence passed between the pair as the so-called Patrick steeled away his own reservations. And then, finally, he rested his tail along Elmskip's back before meeting his gaze. Only for a flicker of a moment, before it was pulled away and rested on the ground. His ears grew hot as he spoke.

"It's better than before. Your healer really knows what he's doing. I was certain I would have to lose the paw." Arcayus joked lightly, trying to shake away the embarrassment of the comforting embrace. But his words grew serious then, betraying his concern, "Is something going on with your kin? There is something troubling you, troubling everyone..." As his breath trailed off, the bi-colored tom frowned softly and looked away. It was tough to shake the inherent nature of self-preservation that had driven him so far. This was sparked up once again as his anxious mind considered what terrors may have befallen these cats, just as one had his own kin. But, swallowing, he found himself deeply troubled for these other cats. There was only so far he could run right now. Besides, even the overwhelming desire to flee from danger could not shake the care that his heart held for others. And, especially in this moment, Elmskip.

A comforting tail laid across his back and he shivered instinctively at the touch. It startled him, and the tail moved away again just as quickly as it came. Elmskip found himself longing for the touch again, yearning for any other touch from the tom, any other source of comfort. Swallowing hard, he tentatively brush his own tail against Patrick's, letting their two tails rest together on the ground. He flicked his ears, ignoring how the tips warmed from embarrassment, before he looked back up to meet the other tom's amber gaze. He stared at him for a moment, looking deep into his eyes with a troubled expression. The scarred warrior had to take a deep breath to steady his nerves before he spoke, his gaze growing distant, his voice soft. Patrick's presence helped with his anxiety.

"WindClan is...in the midst of a war," he began, turning his face away to stare out across camp. "It s-started maybe two moons ago, I'm not sure. One of our ap-apprentices, Puddlepaw, was out of camp on her own and never returned. P-Patrols were reporting more and more predators appearing. F-F-Foxes, dogs, badgers...Two patrols were sent out to try and find Puddlepaw. I...I was a part of the tunneling patrol, the one to go down and search the tu-tunnels for any sign of her. It was me, Barleytuft, Grousefrost, and...S-Sandpaw. We...we were attacked by several foxes underground and we barely escaped with out lives. That's..." he paused, glancing over his shoulder at the deep scars on his back and sides. "That's how I received all of these scars. We met up with Finchstar and his patrol. Puddlepaw had been...murdered by these beasts. Aspenheart came up with the idea to poison the foxes by putting deathberries in rabbits, but..." Elmskip shuddered at the images of the dead rabbits, reeking of fox, deposited once more in the middle of camp alongside a dead finch. A message. "That...that plan didn't work. Finchstar declared war on the beasts. That is where we are now. They're out there, fighting for their lives..." Finally, the tortoiseshell tom trailed off, emotionally exhausted from his speech. He was here, and they were out there. He should have been there with them.

"I guess I'm useless..." he mumbled, drawing his tail back around his thin frame. "I should be out there with them, not...not here...This stupid leg of mine..." His tail curled tightly around the stump of his missing leg and Elmskip fought the urge to bite the useless lump, to tear it from his body. No one needed him, no one cared, why was he even talking to Patrick? Patrick didn't care...right?

OOC: This topic is now open for those who were in Dust In Your Pocket. Aspenheart is currently leading the group back into camp. Feel free to congregate~

"GET OUT OF MY WAY!" a nasally voice shrieked, cutting through the peaceful silence of the camp. Somewhere, a bird took flight, feeling endangered by the harshness and feral nature of the sound. Aspenheart's paws hit the ground with more severity than they usually did as he stumbled into camp. "Get those two to the medicine den and lay them down in the two empty nests. Raventail, do whatever it is deputies do when their leaders go missing. An announcement? You know what, figure it out. And whoever is in there, MAKE ROOM!"

The only comfort he took was control. Since he could no longer control himself, why not give everyone else orders? He decided it was a service to Raventail, who was in enough shock as it were. With Finchstar gone (no, missing, he reminded himself) and Grousefrost incapacitated, someone had to be efficient around here. Besides, Aspenheart had officially stopped giving a rat's tail about what anyone else thought of him right now. Pushing past the entrance to his den, he saw the newcomer, Patrick, and Elmskip in the pale moonlight. He didn't mean to scowl at them, but he couldn't help it. Everything was horrible. He was angry at the burr that was stuck to his scruff, he was disgusted by the brokenness the creatures had left his clanmates in, and the mere sight of two mostly-able-bodied cats nearly made him screech with frustration. Still, he sucked in a breath and tried to keep his voice temperate and even. "Thank your lucky stars that you're in here, because I'm putting you to work. They nearly killed Grousefrost, I brought him from the brink of StarClan. I have no idea what's wrong with Ploverpuddle. Half of the patrol is convinced they saw Puddlepaw's ghost!" he barked, shuffling between them to his herb stores and grabbing some generic supplies while those who came out of the tunnels mostly unscathed delicately laid the two wounded toms on moss nests. When he turned to face Elmskip, his eyes bled with a pain unspoken. It was easy to be vulnerable with the tortoiseshell tom, who understood all too well what the medicine cat truly went through... "The tunnels collapsed. We never found Goldengale or Finchstar. I need water, they've got dirt all over their pelts I need to mop up. If you can hobble, you can soak moss balls."

Finally sitting down properly for the first time, he realized how badly he was shaking. No time for falling down. No time. He lapped up a few sprigs of thyme from the pile he had collected, chewing them weakly between his molars. It was little help. Grousefrost and Ploverpuddle both looked positively helpless... he couldn't even tell if Ploverpuddle was conscious anymore. He waited for Raventail to say something, for his patients to be situated so he could diagnose their injuries, and for his involuntarily appointed nurses to return with the moss. He waited, in simpler terms, for somebody to do something so his world could stop spinning mindlessly out of control. Aspenheart waited for somebody to turn off his brain.

It was as he’d feared. As Raventail gently shifted Grousefrost onto another patrol member’s shoulders, directing Crowpaw with a mixture of tail signals and murmured instructions, he felt a new weight settle over him. He was no stranger to feeling out of his depth in deputyship—and he had accepted that when he’d accepted the position. But every step he took and every order he heard Aspenheart bark, muffled as if through a fox-length of water, was another reminder that this was not deputyship anymore. Without Finchstar (without Finchstar; though he hadn’t seen Finchstar since the battle’s beginning, it was unimaginable that he could be gone), he had to become something in between.

His legs carried him away from the group to the center of camp. This wasn’t a battle; he couldn’t blindly throw himself wherever instinct directed. He couldn’t open his mouth and let the words tumble out unexamined. His legs rejected any attempts to move them. Part of him yowled what he knew he had to do, and part, in a voice half as loud and twice as piercing, reminded him that he didn’t at all understand how to do it. It should have been simple. Haul himself to the Tallrock. Call WindClan to him with hollow words of ceremony, only to deliver news he himself could barely wrap his head around. Tell WindClan their leader had vanished, Goldengale was dead, Grousefrost and Ploverpuddle were in critical condition. Tell them all their fierce, fire-bright courage had amounted to nothing. Tell them the war was…

He breathed in, and out, and in until that thought went silent.

WindClan! The shout took an alarming amount of energy. Raventail wobbled on all four legs rather than sit, leaning more to his right side as WindClan gathered. Suddenly, he understood why Finchstar called so many meetings from here. They could see him, fur matted, eyes dull—but he could see them, too, and there was comfort in that. Bowing his head, he began. “The plan…the plan failed. Finchstar is missing. We didn’t hear his signal, if there was one. The tunnels collapsed wrong; Grousefrost and Ploverpuddle were injured, and Goldengale—” He stopped before his voice had a chance to waver. ”They’ll be sitting right here where we left them.” ”Goldengale was buried.”

Fragments of things he was probably meant to say flickered in his head. An assurance to the patrols that they had fought well; commendations for Spotpaw and Crowpaw, unflinching in the face of danger despite, or because of, their inexperience. Words slipped through his paws. Nothing he said would soften the blow. An absent leader. One dead Clanmate, potentially two or three or four. The beasts might have been killed by the tunnels, but Raventail wouldn’t call it a victory until he saw the bodies. ”Tonight, we had to retreat; now, we need to focus on healing. But this is still our home. We’re not done fighting for it. We’ll bring Goldengale and Finchstar back, and once we've recovered, we'll chase the beasts away for good.” If he couldn’t keep those promises, he could at least try. ”Until then…you can count on me.” Another breath. Raventail stood, the tip of his tail snapping back and forth in a jerky sort of rhythm, and waited—either for WindClan to depart, or for their near-inevitable questions, confusion, objections when they put the pieces together and realized just who was left to fill Finchstar’s prints.
