| He grimaced as he looked at Foxpaw's back leg, certain that it wasn't supposed to be bent like that. It was a little nauseating, but Spottedleap did his best to mask his fear so Foxpaw wouldn't panic. He remembered launching himself out of a tree by mistake during his own apprenticeship, but it had much more of a forward trajectory than Foxpaw's fall and his sprained paw hadn't looked anything like this. Gritting his teeth, Spottedleap crouched close to his apprentice and meowed orders in sharp, short breaths. "You'll be ok. We'll get you to Amberdawn. Try to get up. Make sure you lean against me, don't put any weight on that leg if you can help it. I promise I'll support you. Amberdawn can fix anything, you know."
Spottedleap's ruffled and dirty fur was still standing as though he expected the owl to stand up and strike again any second. But he could see the way its empty eyes stared at the trees above, and he knew they were safe. He supposed he would bring in their squirrels and even the owl after he got Foxpaw safely back to camp and looked after. | Fear threatened to overwhelm Foxpaw, perhaps even more than the pain but Spottedleap's firm voice and simple reassurances kept him grounded. He wanted to shake his head, to deny trying to get up. He was in so much pain, he couldn't stand - he couldn't. But...His breath left him in a shaky murmur as he spoke silent words of determination...And slowly, he found the strength to shift his three remaining paws beneath him and clamber to his feet.
The lack of support nearly sent him tumbling to the side, but he caught himself on Spottedleap's firm shoulder. "O-Okay," he managed, doing his best to keep his voice from revealing how terrified he was. He didn't know Amberdawn, he had never met the medicine cat apprentice properly...He had seen her around the camp and he had climbed on her den a bunch when he was a kit but never interacted directly. He closed his eyes, letting Spottedleap take on most of his weight before he slowly started to trek toward the camp, wincing at the slightest movement sent a wave of pain through his body. "Ow." He took another step. "Ow."
This was going to be a long trip.
