Mintwhisker slowly eased herself out of her nest, rolling her shoulders to shake feeling back into her legs. She glanced the rose-streaked sky and nodded to herself, seeming satisfied. Since Windclan was so close to Highstones, they wouldn't have to leave camp until well after sunrise.
Back in Skyclan, she'd have to leave before the first golden rays of the sun were even visible on the horizon. Sleeping in was definitely a welcome change.
Mintwhisker yawned, drawing a shaking paw across her graying muzzle and then over her ears. She supposed she should wake up Aspenpaw... and maybe tell him what was happening. The two had talked about his ceremony before and he knew that it would be soon, but she hoped he'd still be a little surprised. Mintwhisker could still vividly remember the air of excitement and mystery when Featherlight woke her up countless moons ago- the surprise at the beginning of the ceremony had made all the difference. If all went well, her apprentice would be able to look back on his ceremony with the same fondness she felt when he was her age.
"Aspenpaw, wake up," Mintwhisker mewed, nudging the silver tom gently until he stirred. "Do me a favor and prepare two bundles of traveling herbs- I'll grab something to eat."

Aspenpaw yawned as he was awoken from an uncharacteristically peaceful rest. He stretched his back paws out behind him, smacking his lips and grumbling. Mintwhisker's demand was a peculiar one, as nobody's mentor had asked him about their apprentices' journeys in the past few sunrises. Unless, of course, he already forgot. He moved to his paws and prepared the herbs somewhat mechanically, absentminded in the grogginess of the morning. He lapped up a leaf or two for his own sake in preparation for the journey ahead when he suddenly became cognizant.

"Wait a minute, why are you coming?" he asked curiously as she returned with food, "There's only two bundles. There's no way it's already the half moon, Mintwhisker, I checked."

Mintwhisker returned with two pieces of fresh-kill, one of which she dropped at Aspenpaw's feet. "You're right," She purred, pulling a bundle of herbs closer with one paw. "Today, we're going to Highstones for a different reason. You've worked hard over these past few moons, and I think it's high time you got your full name. Now eat up-" She nudged one of the pieces towards the gray tom, "-and meet me by the camp entrance once you're done. We've got quite a big trek ahead of us, and I'd like to get there by sundown." With that said, she quickly ate her herbs and trotted jovially through Windclan's camp, her tattered ears twitching as warriors and apprentices scampered past her.

Aspenpaw was admittedly taken by surprise by Mintwhisker's promise and smiled warmly at his mentor as he ate. He recalled the first journey he took, the worry and fear. He was more confident in his abilities now, but grappling with WindClan's need for him was a mental journey on its own. It was hard not to other himself emotionally from them, though he was routinely included. Why him was a question that he asked himself often. Why him, he thought, when StarClan could have said no? He was different from the other medicine cats on a base level. He was cynical, analytical, and lacked tact. Even so, Mintwhisker trained him and StarClan accepted him. Was there some kind of higher reason, or was he just in the right place at the right time?

Even with all the thoughts in his head, he was happy. With a new name came new freedom, and though he had warmed up to the company he would almost always have to endure on patrols, the other apprenticeship pains still irked him a little. Mintwhisker herself was an easy mentor, but it was objectively annoying to have to endure apprenticeship for many more moons than he expected to when the flood came. With this in mind, there was a spring in his haphazard step as they left camp. The walk was easier now, with a season of practice with his awkward legs. There was a pride to be had in his surefooted steps. Most of the time, he didn't feel like a cripple, though it was apparent from the outside. How the times had changed.

"I should probably thank you," Aspenpaw said suddenly as they walked along, "You could have said no and just gone back to SkyClan, but you gave me a chance." He nudged the she-cat's shoulder softly. "You're probably sick of us rabbit-chasers, huh? I hope SkyClan has some brighter times when you go home." The subtle mention of the last Gathering hopefully did not go unnoticed. He felt a little bad for his outburst, but he didn't regret it. The revelation didn't really change how he saw Mintwhisker and Amberdawn deep down in his heart. After all, it's not like they could have really stopped him. They deserved to move on, didn't they?

He hoped Amberdawn would accept an apology when he saw her next.

Mintwhisker's tattered ears twitched as Aspenpaw spoke. "No need to thank me- Honestly, I've enjoyed taking some time away from Skyclan." She mewed. "I'm looking forward to being back under the trees, though. I just can't get used to the open sky..."
She hesitated. Thinking about Tinystar's actions brought back several bad memories, and that kind of thinking was dangerously close to the edge of... something. Whatever was in her head, she'd much rather avoid it until she could no longer afford to; even thinking about not thinking about it was too close for comfort.
"Yes," She began, finally breaking the silence that had stretched between them. "I hope so too."

timeskip!

The journey passed quickly, and the sun was barely beginning to set by the time the pair had reached the base of Highstones. The second part of their journey had begun: the dangerous trek up the side of the mountain. Mintwhisker mewed words of caution as they wound their way across the steep, rocky terrain, pausing every so often to make sure that the silver tom was still behind her. She breathed a sigh of relief when they reached Mothermouth, turning to glance at the sky, which had erupted into a blaze of burnt golden light during the climb. "We're right on time." Mintwhisker waited for Aspenpaw to catch his breath before padding towards the cave.
"Stay close," She called over her shoulder before plunging into the darkness, her taupe tail streaming behind her. Aspenpaw had made the trip through the tunnels countless times before, so she wasn't worried about him getting lost.

The cave was dark, but Mintwhisker wasn't worried. The Moonstone would brighten.
She couldn't see Aspenpaw, but she could hear him.
She turned towards the gray tabby tom, her voice echoing throughout the large chamber just like it had moons ago. "Aspenpaw." And the voice that bounced off the stone walls was hers and hers alone, alive and earthly, so different than it had been before. It was the voice of generations of medicine cats' teachings, learned and spoken through one. Starclan's link to the world of the living.
"Are you ready?"

Aspenpaw felt a little lightheaded when he entered the dark cavern, but in a comforting way. Following Mintwhisker down had been like muscle memory. He hardly registered the strange tweaks of his limbs. They were a part of him now, and they got easier with each day. This journey, specifically, was a familiar one.

As Mintwhisker's voice echoed in the small chamber, Aspenpaw nodded, feeling the same sense of overwhelming calm he had when he came here before. "Let's do it," he purred. He longed to see Nightrunner again. How odd, to have a friend from beyond the grave. Aspenpaw made a note to tell the kits about a dead tunneler who he would tattle to when they disrespected their mothers.

Mintwhisker grinned as the Moonstone burst to life behind her, bathing Aspenpaw's fur in light until he shone like the stars themselves. "This must be a sign that Starclan is present." She thought to herself, her ringed tail twitching. Despite her doubts in the beginning that Aspenpaw wasn't fit to be a medicine cat- having not been initially chosen by Starclan -it seemed like their ancestors had accepted his decision to change his path. She'd heard stories of medicine cats being unable to contact Starclan because they were meant to be warriors, or due to their rogue heritage, and there was always a chance that an apprentice wouldn't be recognized by Starclan...
She nearly scolded herself aloud for having any doubt in the first place. Aspenpaw was meant to be a medicine cat- he had handled several high-pressure situations calmly and dealt with concerned family members to boot, not to mention he'd memorized more plants than she had known at his age, all while dealing with a debilitating illness that would've kept him in the medicine den without moons of hard work. Frankly, she was shocked that Starclan hadn't made it clearer that this was the path he was meant to take.

"Very well," She mewed, taking a deep breath. "I, Mintwhisker, medicine cat of SkyClan, call upon my warrior ancestors to look down on this apprentice." The ancient words flowed through the cave just as they had countless times before. This was a ceremony that Mintwhisker knew by heart, although she didn't recall ever taking time to learn it.
"He has trained hard to understand the ways of a medicine cat, and with your help, he will serve his Clan for many moons."

She turned her scarred face towards her apprentice, her murky eyes almost unnaturally bright. "Aspenpaw, do you promise to uphold the ways of a medicine cat, to stand apart from rivalry between Clan and Clan and to protect all cats equally, even at the cost of your life?"

Familiarity was to be expected when he shimmied down the long tunnel that led to the dark chamber. He didn't expect the tranquility, the pride, or the apprehension. A few thoughts crossed his mind, with the largest being "what now"? Why stop, when there was so much more he could do? Was there hope still for cats like Swiftstep and Cloverpaw, with symptoms and signs that would never really go away. How come there wasn't answers for their former deputy, and how come an apprentice's tail had to be forever kinked? Maybe he was ambitious to want to be more than what was expected of him. It was hard enough being looked at like he was a charity case. He looked at Mintwhisker and felt at peace with his decisions he had made. Time to make it worth it.

Of course, maybe he was just a crippled herb chewer. Sometimes, you just didn't get to choose. Aspenpaw gulped. "I do."

Mintwhisker nodded. "Then by the powers of StarClan, I give you your true name as a medicine cat. Aspenpaw, from this moment on, you will be known as Aspenheart. StarClan honors your perseverance and intelligence."
Mintwhisker finished her speech with a smile. "Congratulations, Aspenheart!" She mewed. "You're officially Windclan's fully-named medicine cat."
She gestured towards the Moonstone. "Go on," She purred. "I'm sure that Starclan is eager to speak with you."

Aspenpaw's Medicine Cat Ceremony Empty
PostSubject: Re: Aspenpaw's Medicine Cat Ceremony   Aspenpaw's Medicine Cat Ceremony EmptyWed Aug 28, 2019 12:50 pm

Aspenheart, suddenly feeling a very heavy burden being lifted off his shoulders, let his new name roll around in his brain. It wasn't Aspenwiggle after all, was it? He felt whole and complete, and full of respect for Mintwhisker. It was a name with meaning and dedication. He was a medicine cat now. His mentor could return home, and life could carry on. His teal eyes caught the bright Moonstone as he shifted to lay beside it. He stared into it, the dreamy glow hypontizing him, before his eyes fluttered shut and his nose pressed against the cold rock. He felt as if he had become a blank slate, where any destiny or life could be carved into him at a moment's notice. He gave himself up with haste to the sleep that threatened him.

The starry field reminded him of home. It was calm and bright, and the scent of moor birds drifted on the Greenleaf breeze. It was perfect and whole, and before long he had forgotten he was in StarClan. The silver tabby rested his paws in the plush grass and allowed himself rest. It was something he didn't often have, a sense of idleness. WindClan's bustling camp was chaotic and full of surprises. The rabbits in the field paid him no mind. Aspenheart viewed them with a sense of curiosity. Prey was not so easily observed on the real ground, and he marveled at the clarity in this one's eyes when they were full of life. Its velvet ears were long and pointed. What strange creatures, rabbits. They could run better than he ever would again, and he ate them each sunhigh! He was indeed so engrossed in his watchfulness that he did not notice the smaller cat that sat down beside him until the StarClanner purred. He was long-furred, cream and fluffy. He was also young, taken too soon. He was merely a whisp, a memory now. He bore the smell of dirt and must underneath the wildflower scent that all WindClan cats bore. Quailpaw.

"You're missed," Aspenheart assured in a soft whisper. "All of WindClan grieved for you. Your siblings are extraordinary."

Quailpaw did not speak for many moments. His ears twitched as if he was thinking. From all Aspenheart could perceive, the little tomcat was at peace with his eternal rest. They sat in comfortable silence and watched the sun gleam until it was nearly dipping past the mountains. Sometimes, the starry apprentice would rise and dance about, chasing bees and little songbirds around the ethereal land. For both of them, time both rushed by and slowed to a halt, as if the entire day took place in one singular time that lasted until the end of days. "If you intend on not speaking, at least let me tell you what's happened since you've been here."

And so, Aspenheart began. He wove a tale as if he spoke to a litter of kits in the nursery. He told the apprentice all that had been done in pursuit of a better life for the forest. He told Quailpaw about Goldengale's ceremony, how the entire clan gathered to watch her grow into her own paws. He told him about Nightrunner, the ancient one, who taught him how to seek his way in the cold dark earth. Aspenheart mentioned the Gathering, when Finchstar revealed to everyone a grievous crime. Raventail's deputyship, Grousefrost's poor lost mate, Swiftstep's mysterious illness... Aspenheart found himself recounting the story of WindClan to the silent StarClan dweller. Now what? he said to himself, The wind is carrying me, but where does it lead?

"The wind'll only carry you if you let it."

Aspenheart's ears pricked as he turned to face Quailpaw in shock. His voice sounded kittish in quality, but mature in tone. "Let it take you by the scruff and watch the grass roll by as it pulls you. You were always meant to get here. Trust in the journey, not the destination..."

The familiar tug of a dream about to end nipped at Aspenheart's back legs.

"You aren't like the others. You're practical, quick-thinking. Tact and patience does not come easily. Your wit is worth more than its weight in fresh-kill. Keep it about you."

Aspenheart fought the feeling. He wanted to keep talking. He wanted something to tell the apprentice's brothers and sisters, to give them hope, not ominous messages from the stars through Quailpaw's vessel!

"And when it seems time for the journey to end, do not go gently. Not every ending is set in stone, Aspenheart. Good luck."

With the swirling of one million stars, Aspenheart returned to the cavern with bleary and tear-wet eyes. When Mintwhisker woke, it would be time for her to leave.

Time for the wind to carry him.
