July Gathering 2019 Full-moon-yoga

The once wet clearing had now dried up and new grass could be seen since the last time the moon was high and round in the night sky. A soft, fresh breeze crossed the lands of the Fourtrees while the silent Great Rock waited patiently for the travelling cats to arrive. Soon, the clearing will be filled with shiny eyes and a bunch of different scents from the corners of the forest.

The Riverclan leader, thinner than usual, travelled with his clanmates through the camps of reeds, crossed the part of the river next to the Twoleg Bridge and finally made it to the reborn clearing of the Fourtrees. The large tom didn't say much to his clanmates in the way to the Gathering Meeting, not even to his deputy or apprentice. Too much lurked in his head to even have a proper, nice conversation with his clanmates. In his eyes, open or not, all he could see was that fox...
Jaystar jumped on top of the rock, his green eyes lost while gazing at his clanmates taking place on their usual spots. He curled his feathery tail around his body and waited... silent, still, like a statue. Maybe that was what he was meant to be according to Starclan's will. Why would they let be the leader after all? To witness death, suffering? To mourn his loved ones... the ones who were killed by predators and the ones who perished in the flood? Meadowpaw... Fallowlight... two young she-cats who didn't deserve what happened. And there he was. Alive. But why? What was the reason for him to thrive when so few survive? So many cats deserved to live more than him but... maybe this was a type of punishment from Starclan, from his ancestors. He was meant to suffer... yet... it was unfair... it was unfair other had to die and be wounded just for him to suffer. What did Starclan want from him?

Berrycloud followed his clanmates keeping a close distance to his siblings, Sparkfrost and Ivypaw. He didn't say much as he walked in the clearing. The warrior merely looked over for a dry to spot to sit down and once he found one, he made himself comfortable there. He wrapped his massive body with his fluffy tail and looked around, noticing they were the first to arrive, just like last time. The golden tom let out a sigh and thought to himself... I hope Maplepaw is all right... Ivypaw was a little rough on her... I wonder if she would even want to talk again...

The moon lit the sky with a brilliant light, stars twinkling overhead. Finchstar hadn't seen it in such a way before. In the last gathering, his eyes had been dull, senses clogged, mind broken. While the WindClan leader had put on a good façade, this gathering would forever feel more real than his first as a leader. His clanmates walked by his side, splitting into groups as they merged with RiverClan. The leader watched as his friends wove between pelts of silver and gold, twinkling and glittering as beautiful as ever. Every day seemed to astound the tom, he had been blind to so much life, and now that he had made peace with Brookclover, she brought the beauty to him. Leaping atop the Great Rock, the shadowy green leaves rustled with the wind. "Jaystar." Finchstar dipped his head to the RiverClan leader, meeting the silver gray tabby on the rock. There was a strange relationship between the two kings, and as they locked eyes, Finchstar could see that he had lost, too. It was a quiet burden they both carried, the grief of their loved ones, the weight of a clan. And each and every death, each and every injury clawed through them like it was their own. Finchstar didn't think such a thing existed, until he lead his clan down the mountain and saw them fight those dogs with the strength of LionClan. He knew he loved them then, and would even die for their souls if asked. He had almost abandoned that commitment, but the love waiting for him, it led him back.

The shell of a tom he was last gathering had not meant a good first impression for WindClan's new leader, but he couldn't bring himself to care. It was a freeing feeling, throwing it all to the wind, and submerging himself into the things that meant something. Tensions were low, and no jabs would be made today. A quiet acceptance between himself and the forest, that whatever grief had plagued him before, had been forgotten by Fourtrees. Another gathering, another game. And tonight, Finchstar would play it well. Before finding a seat on the boulder, the orange and white tabby let his tail rest across Jaystar's, an odd gesture, but that feeling between them, that commonality, it wasn't fiction. "It gets easier." Finchstar mewed solemnly, nodding in respect before padding off to his side of the rock. Loss was a difficult matter, but the kings of the forest hung it on their shoulders, and held their heads high anyway. Finchstar wasn't good at it, as he would forever be subject to the grief that plagued him. But some days were better than others, and on those days, he felt free. Some days were hard, and on those days, he would fake it until Brookclover could stand by him again. Cats below merged with each other, and fate saw all of them. Finchstar was excited to hear the stories that had taken place in their lives. WindClan had much to report as well.

Mistypaw had followed her leader into the clearing. This was going to be the she cats first gathering, and she was stoked. Everything was so new to her! It seemed like there was so many cats, and the smells! There were so many smells, prey predator and cat alike. Just being amongst it all was so exhilarating! How had they kept all of this from her before? She loved it here! And who knew, maybe she would get to meet some new friends? It was worth a shot!

As he padded into the clearing behind Finchstar, Raventail made the mistake of looking up and promptly stumbled over his paws, earning some grumbles and annoyed whisker-twitches from the cats whose way he was blocking. Even at the grand reunion of the shores, he had never seen so many cats in his life. He had to wonder, how many of them had been at the lake with him? Suddenly, he was glad he’d skipped the previous moon’s Gathering; there was no way he could have faced all these strangers with a smile then. But now…this was just another step forward. A rite of passage, in a way—even if he was finishing it a few moons late.

WindClan scattered. Raventail followed their lead, mingling with the crowd of RiverClanners. He knew Dappleshine was most likely here, but she wasn’t the only cat he was looking for. Weighing on his mind now were two cats who weren’t yet present. Unlike Dappleshine, meeting them wasn’t as easy as strolling up to a border; in fact, WindClan shared no borders with either of them. At the very least, he wanted to be sure Mosspaw and Leafpaw were alive and well, and this was the first chance he had to do so.

The light of the moon guided a dark silhouette through the soft undergrowth of the forest. Once drenched and flooded land was now dry and blossoming with life. He glanced at a couple flowers as the forms of cats followed him until they reached the edge of a large clearing. Massive oak trees stood at the four corners as they seemed to since the dawn of time. It felt strange, for Marshstorm to be at the helm, rather than following the golden pelt of Leopardstar. Still, he had a job to do. Not a single gathering could be missed... alliances were important.

With a deep breath, he turned his head to the gathered cats behind him. A single nod directed at them before springing down into the clearing itself. His dark pelt becoming illuminated in the moon's glow as he padded over to tall rock and glanced over at the deputy spot near the base. Where he would normally be. He leapt onto the massive rock before he could let anxiety take a hold of him. He had to be strong.

"Greetings Jaystar, Finchstar." He nodded respectfully to each leader currently on the rock. "My apologies, Leopardstar injured his leg, so I'm filling in for him tonight." The explanation was simple, but his amber eyes fell to Jaystar the heaviest. Tensions between RiverClan and ThunderClan seemed to be growing again, and he wasn't sure there was anything he could do to stem it from becoming worse. He turned to the gathering cats. It was almost familiar. He could almost picture being in camp instead, with daylight instead of the moon and his clan waiting eagerly for an announcement. It helped ease his mind as he thought about it that way.

Graypaw followed her deputy, keeping her head low. She tried to pretend to have an air of confidence, but the truth was, she was scared. Scared of everything being an apprentice meant. The responsibilities that fell on her shoulders. No longer having her mother's guidance. She didn't even have the same name. And now here she was, about to face a bunch of cats she had never before seen in her life, knowing one day she might meet them in battle. She hated what all of it meant. But she just had to deal with it, so she did.

This was yet another time when his mother and mentor being the same cat came in handy; there was no debate about who to travel to the Gathering with. Galepaw trotted along beside Emberheart, staring up at the Great Rock. It wasn’t as big as he’d expected, but, then, a rock tall enough to touch the clouds was a ridiculous idea.

It was time to see all those other Clans Emberheart had told him about. Two were already there. One smelled like the river (rather, the river smelled like them); that had to be RiverClan. The other’s scent was completely new, nothing like the strains of mud he’d caught at the Thunderpath or the foresty smell of those cats he’d fought at the Fallen Oak—it belonged to WindClan, their elusive allies across the forest. Galepaw’s eyes turned toward WindClan’s apparent leader, sizing him up. Being an apprentice, an inexperienced one at that, he came away with exactly one conclusion: Finchstar was tall.

Dappleshine padded among the group of RiverClan cats, casting a look back over her shoulder to her apprentice. She was confident in his ability to keep up, that wasn't why she kept checking on him, but she was excited to see the tom's reaction to his first Gathering. As they reached the clearing and waited for the signal, she reached her head up to his, maybe it was weird that her apprentice was taller than she was, but she was used to it by now. After all, Ospreypaw had always been taller than she had, for as long as she had known him. "Now, Ospreypaw... The leaders are a very diverse and unique group. If you have any questions about them, please come and ask me and I will answer to the best of my ability. Oh, and regarding SkyClan's leader Tinystar, please for the love of StarClan don't mention his height out loud. If you do, I will ensure that you are taking care of the elders for the next half-moon." She fixed him with a look that was light, but definitely somewhat serious. As they made their way into the clearing, Dappleshine moved towards the WindClan side of Fourtrees, seeing if her apprentice was still behind her. "You're free to talk to whomever you would like when the other clans arrive, but try not to wander too far. Come sit next to me when the leaders call the Gathering to order, okay?" She smiled at the tom as he made his choice regarding what to do, settling down while she waited for the other clans. It didn't take long before the scent of WindClan came from behind her, and she looked over her shoulder to the cats that were streaming down, trying to pick out the two pelts she knew. The first cat she saw was Raventail, and she smiled at the sight of him. He had a rather small she-cat next to him that looked like a mini-Barleytuft, and she tilted her head as she approached the two from behind. Tapping his far shoulder lightly with her paw, she waited for him to turn towards her with a smile on her face.

Goldenpaw followed behind Raventail, her entire body quivering with newfound excitement. Her pride had been wounded by the words of her parents and her mentor at the meeting a few sundowns before, especially by what her father had said, but they had been able to talk and sort things out somewhat. Although she felt less like the wind had been taken out of her after their chat, her confidence was still dampened, and it showed to those who knew her as she stayed silent despite the almost constant shiverings of anticipation. As they walked down into the clearing, she smelled the air, there were so many cats but she was only able to smell one particular scent, one she recognized vaguely from her first training as RiverClan. She settled down next to Raventail, holding her head high - no one else had to know she wasn't quite herself, and she was determined to make a good first impression. Movement out of the corner of her eye made her turn her head, and she was surprised to see a pretty silvery gray she-cat with white paws that smelled strongly of the water and fish. A scent she had only smelled once before, by the Gorge. She narrowed her eyes, staring at this strange RiverClan cat that had approached herself and her mentor before turning her face up to Raventail. "Who is this? Who are you?"

Mosspaw had hesitated back in camp before deciding to come to the Gathering. Leopardstar was not in any critical state, just one where he needed to stay off of his leg, which contributed to her decision to leave him under the watchful gaze of a couple warriors back at camp for this Gathering. No sense in risking further, or even re-injury for the meeting between clans, not when Marshstorm was capable to lead them himself. She felt as though many pounds of worries had been thrust onto her shoulders since the last Gathering - Dewpaw had failed in his attempt to harm her and died at her paws, a single kit had been found and a fox had attacked, Pricklebush had been spending time in RiverClan, leaving her to care for ThunderClan's needs as he helped guide Mistlepaw's paws to aid her own clan. She was proud of him for taking them both on, but she would be lying if she tried to pretend that she didn't miss the large, ginger-furred tom most of the time. It was a lot of work, and she wasn't sure how he had done it alone for so long. Besides, Flintfang was still no where to be seen or heard from, despite numerous trips to that strange, eerie tunnel under the Thunderpath. She couldn't help but worry that something had gone horribly wrong, and she would never see him again. She padded towards her place by Fourtrees when an pelt she hadn't seen in a long time, and one she could hardly recognize with how much growing had been done. Eyes brightening momentarily, she waved her tail from across the clearing, preparing to call for the tom as their eyes met when another sleek she-cat approached the tom and a much smaller she-cat that looked strangely familiar, although she couldn't quite pull from where, turned towards her. She smiled as she watched from afar, imagining what the exchange must hold before taking up a position at the base of Fourtrees, waiting patiently for her fellow medicine cat and medicine cat apprentice's to arrive.

Emberheart led her son and apprentice into the Gathering, sitting quietly beside him and waiting for the other Clans to arrive. Marshstorm had joined the RiverClan and WindClan leaders... Where, then, were Tinystar and Scorchstar?
~
Batbite had never been one to pass up an opportunity to learn something new. Each and every Gathering presented such an opportunity; and she was determined to learn all that she could. She made sure to keep an eye on where her family was, yes, but she was also studying the leaders on the Great Rock and the other cats gathered at Fourtrees. Observation, she'd found, was one of the best ways to learn things.

Staying silent, Tinystar jumped up onto the Greatrock and sat down near the edge of the leaders, per usual. Much like the previous gathering, he couldn't bring himself to feel much joy, or anything else for that matter. The rest of him family was safe, which he had been overjoyed about upon such a discovery, but having his mate practically ripped out from this life had taken a toll on the little legged tom and only StarClan knew how long he would be in such a state of hopelessness. For now, all he could do was stay silent, for it wasn't like the other leaders were very keen on chatting with him anyway.

Sparkfrost padded into the clearing. It felt like he was staring into a crowd of cats about as familiar as those whose camp he resided in. He had learned all their names and was getting a hang of their ranks and culture, but without having grown up at their sides, or rather his lack of memory of doing so, the attachment was about as in depth as with those he had met during the flood journey. There were a few who he spent his time with, like Magpiepaw who was at his side often, mostly due to circumstance. But the blue cream calico often found himself enjoying the younger cat's company. Although, the brotherly kinship was something that he no longer felt as he had once before, Magpiepaw was great to be around and Sparkfrost loved to support him during the moments in which his confidence was lacking. If there was one thing he had managed to learn about himself, it was that he did not meet fear often. Little thing shook the strong willed, and some how lax, tom. Even his memory loss. Despite how it nagged so consistently at the edge of his consciousness.

He missed having the apprentice her but perhaps some of the other cats he had met before were among the crowd. If the leader and deputy had not kept him so busy with patrols and training, he likely would have gone to see them already. Padding into the somewhat sparse crowd, Sparkfrost settled near the center of the cats. It never really overwhelmed him to be around so many different scents and bodies. Riverclan camp had felt rather empty after their return from the lake. Settling down, his dull green eyes scanned the crowd for a familiar coat; it had to be one of the cats that he met after the flood. Was Amberdawn here? Or Sagepaw? As he waited, his tail flickered back and forth. Or even the handsome Thunderclan warrior that he had spoken to only in brief snatches?  Hopefully one of them would arrive soon to quench his eager soul.

ooc; he is being saved for lynxtail

~~

Beartooth had not wanted to leave camp tonight but without Leopardstar here, there was no choice but for the bulky warrior to accompany his deputy. It was his duty as one of the clan's elder warriors. His head was low but due to his stature each step was still as powerful as the last. So many things had happened recently, emotions he dared not to attempt to process. Undoubtedly there was disappointment he longed not to express, and worries that were better left unconsidered. A slight frown crossed his maw as he padded towards the fringes of the clearing, sticking near the other Thunderclan cats. The desire to speak to any cat was gone. Not even the presence of Ridgelight could bring him comfort tonight. He wasn't sure what would help to ease him mind now. Hopefully, this gathering would end soon and he could return home. Even if it was the last place he wanted to be at the moment, there was much more familiarity there than in this vast clearing.

ooc; reserved for amberdawn

This Gathering felt different than the one prior for many reasons, not the least of which was merely that time had passed and given grief and loss time to run their course and become less overwhelming. As Barleytuft approached Fourtrees with his Clan he was surrounded by kin and Clanmates, and he gazed ahead at his leader and friend, Finchstar, remembering how a moon ago he had been a shell of a cat. Barleytuft had really only gone to support his mourning leader, for facing a full forest after the loss of a loved one had to be even more difficult than facing Clanmates. Tonight, however, the ginger-and-white tom had learned how to carry his grief more bearably, and so Barleytuft came for the reason most cats did: to socialize with other Clans and receive news firstpaw.

On the way, he mewed to his children in attendance, "You're welcome to stay with the Clan if you want, but I would encourage you to go and meet some other Clan cats. It's good to learn about the cats on the other territories." Maybe in a different moon he might have warned them not to reveal too much about WindClan or its happenings, but the thought didn't cross his mind. Things between Clans had been fairly peaceful while they all settled back into their homes and he saw no reason to plant seeds of mistrust or encourage the building of walls where the building of bridges would suit just as nicely. "Make sure you're polite, and if anyone tries to start an argument ignore them. Tonight there's a truce."

Then they had arrived and Barleytuft veered a little towards the edge, trying to find a spot where his kits might find him easily if they needed him. By the time he had settled into his spot, however, he was surprised - well, not unexpectedly surprised - to see that they had already scattered into the currently small crowd. The pale tabby tom chuckled and settled himself, looking to see Finchstar murmuring something to Jaystar before padding to his own pace on the Great Rock. Barleytuft narrowed his eyes and gazed at the large RiverClan leader with a thoughtful expression for several long moments. Some of the shine seemed to have left the silver tabby's pelt; had RiverClan been suffering this past moon? He supposed he might find out soon.

Cloverpaw didn't pay his father much mind as he strode with WindClan towards Fourtrees. The silver tabby tom practically vibrated with excitement as they drew nearer to the border when WindClan ended and the sacred meeting place began. Finchstar had of course shown him the borders and he'd walked near there several times but this was the first time he would get to visit in person. It was so much different now than it was during any other day - well, night - of the moon, for scents of other Clans wafted gently on the breeze from their destination. He knew as they drew nearer that it would be worth the wait. He glanced aside at his sister, Goldenpaw, walking with her mentor. Raventail seemed nice enough; poor Mistypaw seemed to have gotten the biggest stick-in-the-mud mentor in history in Grousefrost. Cloverpaw hoped he'd allow her to enjoy the Gathering.

At last they slipped into the clearing underneath the four massive trees and Cloverpaw breathed, "Wow!" as his light amber eyes landed on all five Clans mingled together. He'd thought WindClan was big, but he had no idea how wrong he was! All kinds of scents drited in the air, so many that the WindClan apprentice thought his head was going to burst. "Hey, Goldenpaw, we should go find..." he started as he turned to find his sister, but she had already disappeared; he could see the tip of her tail behind her mentor's as they slipped into the gathered group of cats. Cloverpaw frowned and grumbled but turned to see his twin sister Mistypaw still staring with an amazed expression around the clearing.

"Mistypaw! Hey! We should stick together," Cloverpaw announced, and without waiting for her opinion he padded to her side and brushed her tail with his. "We'll meet more cats and learn more stuff that way. Right?" Truthfully, he was just blown away by how much was happening. His eyes finally seemed to notice the Great Rock, and he exclaimed, "Oh! That's where all the leaders sit! I wonder how high up it is?"

Amberdawn didn't know if she should hope to see her mentor, Mintwhisker, at the evening's Gathering. Surely she would want to come so that she could see her Clanmates and check up on SkyClan, right? Disappointment in that aspect had come too recently, though; Amberdawn had certainly expected her mentor to greet her before or check in with her after, but instead the she-cat returned to her temporary home in WindClan without a word. Amberdawn had been crushed, and while talking with her new friend Mosspaw had helped, the problems hadn't really changed. The SkyClan medicine cat felt sad and alone even with all her Clan around because Leaftwirl had drifted away towards her warriors duties and Tinystar was struggling with Moonlight's death and Mintwhisker was gone. Not forever, but right then it felt like it.

She entered the clearing with a tired, sad darkness in her eyes and was surprised to see that all the Clans had arrived. Perhaps it would be a quick night and she could return to rummaging around the medicine den trying to keep it perfect for a cat that wasn't there. The golden medicine cat paused on the edge and saw Mosspaw of ThunderClan already waiting. At least she's here, Amberdawn thought, I hope things are going better for her. As she started making her way towards her spot she passed a throng of other ThunderClan cats and a faint, familiar scent touched her tongue. She paused and looked to her side to spot a large tom with a distinctive set of scars over his eye. "Beartooth?" she ventured, turning towards the tom with one paw lifted hopefully. Her eyes lit a little as she fully recognized him. "It is you - I'm so glad to see you. I remembered seeing you here and there on the walk from the lake, but..." She didn't know if he would be upset that she hadn't tried to check on him earlier, but she suspected that he had other things on his mind.

It had been a while. Minkpaw took a careful breath as he hesitated a moment before the line of bushes. The last time he had been here, things hadn't ended well. The memory of twolegs rushing out of these bushes he now stood among didn't haunt him as much as... other things... but it had been the beginning of the end. Bracing himself, he shouldered his way through the leaves and into the open. Moonlight streamed down from above onto the rock in the middle of the clearing, just like that first time. It looked like most of the leaders were already there, their eyes glinting in the light as they settled on top of the Great rock. Strangely, the clearing looked almost untouched by the flood, only a few scattered clumps of tangled branches showing that it had been there.

The fur along his back prickled slightly as he stuck near the edge of the clearing, the uncomfortable memory of shouting twolegs bursting out of the shadows and snow flitting at the edges of his mind. But as laden with memories as this place was, it was still better than the RiverClan camp. Here, every sigh of the wind through rushes didn't bring with it a ghostly echo of laughter, a brief half-formed scent that tickled his nose before it was gone.

He had practically begged to go. Since he had been pronounced fit enough to leave the medicine cat den - practically thrown out when he refused to - even his friends' efforts to include him and try to raise his spirits didn't help, though they had helped him to at least try and get back into things. Every night sleep refused to come, and even when the dreams were good they still reminded him of what he'd lost. What he could never have.

He needed a distraction. And along with that need came another hope that he would perhaps see the others - those cats who had been with him in one of the worst times of his life, and the bond which they'd forged almost as strong as that of him and his family. His eyes scanned the clearing, and his ears pricked as he spotted a couple of pelts he hadn't seen for a while. Among them was Aspenpaw, who was sitting with the medicine cats, though Minkpaw had no recollection of anything about the tom being chosen as a medicine cat. It wasn't his place to try and talk with the medicine cats, so he resigned himself to perhaps being able to talk to him later. But the other... he padded up to her, clearing his throat slightly just in case she hadn't heard his approach, though considering the way she was analyzing the rest of the clearing, that was a slim chance.

A wan but genuine smile broke over his maw as he dipped his head slightly in greeting. "Batpaw, it's nice to see you again. How have you all been?"

The RiverClan deputy might have been physically present at Fourtrees, but a large portion of his thoughts remained back in the island camp. It had barely been a day since Lionkit and Risingkit had first opened their eyes. Now that they were able to leave the Nursery, they were sure to become far more active. It would not be long before they were getting into all sorts of trouble. He knew that Pebblestreak was watching over them, but he could not keep from worrying. That aspect of his personality had not changed one bit since the time when Dappleshine and her littermates had still been kits. Of course, Scorchclaw tried to suppress it. He was still Jaystar's second-in-command after all, and he knew he had duties to fulfill. Tonight would be another long night. Neither he nor Jaystar had forgotten about Meadowpaw's body being found in ThunderClan territory. As always, it seemed that not a single Gathering could go by without some further conflict between the two clans. It was far from surprising now. As soon as he had entered the clearing, the large tabby had instinctively tensed up. His expression settled into the stony mask it always did during these full-moon meetings. Before he left for the Great Rock, he left a few words of instruction for Otterpaw. It would be her first time attending a proper Gathering. "Stick with your clanmates, Otterpaw. Watch what you reveal to those beyond our clan, for we will seldom know who an enemy is." There was no time for more. Lightly flicking his tail against her shoulder, he turned and headed for his usual seat. As he stepped into the shadow of the Great Rock, he realized that Marshstorm was standing among the leaders tonight. His brow furrowed, but he said nothing. The truth would be revealed as soon as the Gathering began. With his customary silence, he claimed his seat.

OOC: I'll post with Hail later. She is attending this Gathering.
