Sleep was hard to come by for a certain she-kit.

Meadowkit remained utterly still in her nest, feigning the sleep that evaded her. The moments laying in the nursery dragged on when there was no one to talk to. Gentle snores surrounded her. The sounds were normally soothing, but now, they pounded into her skull, driving the urge to sleep further away. She shifted her paws with a sigh. It appeared that her mid-day nap was taking its toll.

There was nothing to do, nothing to say, and no one to talk to. Unless she wanted to speak to herself, but then she would look like a complete idiot if anyone awoke to her mumbling. And she certainly could not afford her reputation just to satisfy her boredom.

Her sole option was to leave the nursery. It was not the perfect idea - no - far from it. She could get lost or hurt. And there was no guarantee that entertainment would greet her outside of this den. But anything had to be better than staying in this prison until dawn. Plus, at least this way she could talk to herself without anyone noticing. Meadowkit shrugged the moss around her away. Night strolls were supposed to be refreshing. It could be the most calming experience of her, somewhat short, lifetime. The cream-coated she-cat rose to her paws, and began to pick her way through the den, hyperconscious of the tails and paws littered about.

Though, it seemed she had nothing to fear, as the night terrain that greeted her was surprisingly nice. The stars glittered relentlessly above and the crisp night air was a welcome break from the stuffy insides of the nursery. Her sky blue eyes scanned the camp, searching for something - anything- to do. Maybe tonight was her lucky break. Perhaps she would meet a warrior. Now that would be something. Even an apprentice would be a welcome break from the over-excitement that kits exuded. Meadowkit scoffed at the idea of such kit-like behavior, even though that same excitement and eagerness bubbled through her own veins.

As much as he enjoyed how quiet the nights here were, Lightpaw had never been one to stay up late. Hunting, sparring, and helping the elders kept him busy. More often than not, he fell into his nest too exhausted to keep his eyes open, much less talk to his denmates or venture out into the camp to look at the stars. Even when he couldn’t sleep, he had to keep his paws busy, whether that meant grooming his fur for hours on end, readjusting the moss in his nest (much to the annoyance of his denmates), or simply wandering around until some small problem caught his attention.

Tonight was one of those rare nights. Maplepaw was getting better, Mistyrain was healthy enough to resume his training, all was right with the world—yet Lightpaw couldn’t seem to shut his mind down long enough to fall asleep. The more he thought about how much he needed the rest, the more insistently it eluded him. Finally, with a quiet sigh, he stood and made his way toward the apprentice den’s entrance, careful to keep his tail high. After all, the point of leaving was to not make the others mad at him.

He’d expected to find a near-empty camp, and near-empty it was, save for a pale-furred kitten. Were they supposed to be out of the nursery? Narrowing his eyes, Lightpaw started forward; then he stopped himself. She didn’t seem to be trying to sneak out… Maybe she was like him. Awake for no clear reason at all.

He had been an apprentice just long enough to forget how one should speak to kits. Not that he’d been a particularly normal kit, anyway; as long as he could remember, he’d tried to be responsible, serious, older than he was. Being raised so far from what he now considered home had played a part, as had the race down from the mountains with dogs and a Sharptooth at their backs, but the rest was ingrained in him. Lightpaw hesitated for what seemed an embarrassingly long time, even to him. This couldn’t be harder than talking to the warriors—he couldn’t let it be harder. ”Excuse me,” he meowed softly, padding up next to the she-kit (with small steps, of course). ”What are you doing awake?”

She had never realized how beautiful the stars were. She had never had the chance to witness them alone and undisturbed. They glowed with a startling brilliance, each star giving off a different aura then the previous. Some were larger and burned brighter, while others twinkled softly, seemingly content with their smaller size. Meadowkit fought the urge to reach up, she knew the effort would be in vain, just to touch those glittering stars. To hold one in her paw. Her breath caught in her throat just imagining it. But  it was nothing but a fantasy. She knew the stars were unreachable, and the fact only grew her desire to hold one for herself.

But tonight, she was sharing the miracle of star-light with another cat. The pawsteps of another cat were painfully loud in the silence of the night. She turned her head to see the pelt of a pale tom who was exceptionally tall compared to Meadowkit's relatively small stature. The kitten came to her paws, sitting only made her feel shorter, and perked her ears. His voice, she was fairly certain he was a tom, was much deeper than the high-pitched mewling of the kittens within the nursery. It was a stark and alluring contrast.

The cream molly met his blue eyes as he questioned her. Immediately, she realized she had no answer to his inquiry. She had no reason to be about this late at night. She should have been sleeping at her mother's side, dozing away without a care, but she wasn't. Meadowkit could not fathom how to put that choice of activity into words. She wanted to say something clever, impress this apprentice, and saying she was star-gazing or something else equally as mouse-brained, well, it was far from the grand reply she desired.

So Meadowkit did the one thing she knew wouldn't make her look completely ignorant. "What are you doing up?" Confident that this answer was unbeatable and quite clever, she had turned the question on him, afterall, Meadowkit  glared daggers at the tom, daring him to answer her question wrong.

Though the she-kit, now standing, couldn’t match his height, Lightpaw couldn’t help but wonder if she was trying to glare him down until he was at her eye level. Had he done something wrong? Most of the kits he knew weren’t so immediately defensive…except the only kits he’d ever really met were his littermates, canceling out whatever benefit that knowledge might have otherwise had. Figuring out kits was so much easier when you were one yourself.

Still, it was hard to be intimidated by someone so much smaller than him. Something about her odd response inexplicably helped ease his nerves. He didn’t quite have the guts to speak his first thought (I asked first, of course), but he sat down with little further hesitation, arranging his tail over his paws as he often did. ”I couldn’t sleep.” By this point, he had settled on simply speaking to the kit as if she was his age; it was the only thing he knew how to do. Besides, regardless of her tone, she had asked. Lightpaw raised his muzzle to the stars. ”It’s a nice night, so I thought I’d spend some of it in the camp.” It wasn't a terribly interesting answer, but Lightpaw had never considered himself terribly interesting.

Maybe it was because he was speaking to a younger cat, maybe it was because things had been going so well lately, maybe he was more sleep-deprived than he thought—whatever the reason, Lightpaw chose to stay. More importantly, he chose not to march the kit back into the nursery. She hadn't bolted at his approach; that was good enough for him. Making an extra effort to inject friendliness (and the faintest bit of curiosity) into his voice, he turned toward her and once again meowed, ”So, what are you doing up?”

Meadowkit's ruffled pelt settled slightly as the tom offered no resistance before answering her question. He was a harmless - and cute - apprentice. One that, hearing him reply to her, could not challenge her when she questioned him. So he was harmless. Which was a relief, for he was twice her size with, most likely, triple the skillset. If he had been in a sour mood, Meadowkit doubted she would still be standing with such sheer confidence.

"I couldn't sleep." was his answer. Simple but insightful. So he was restless and harmless. Meadowkit's glare softened to a curious gaze at his uplifted muzzle. He soon spoke again. "”It’s a nice night, so I thought I’d spend some of it in the camp.” another fair response. The she-kit, though he did answer, was incredibly bored with his reasons. He could have at least been a little more exciting. But stargazing? It was so dull that she hardly knew what to comeback with. Why couldn't he have been sneaking off to have a secret rendezvous with some mysterious clan cat? Now that would have been interesting.

Meadowkit knew she could not avoid the question this time. It swung back at her as the apprentice opened his maw for the third time since her initial inquiry. What was she doing up? She didn't want to be some basic she-kit and recite exactly what the tom had said. She had been restless, as he had, and was now up and about. But that was boring, and Meadowkit was certainly not boring.

"I was going to sneak out." a lie and a reveal to a crime she was, in fact, not going to commit. "But it seems you caught me, mid-escape." Meadowkit shuffled her paws. "Which is kind of annoying. Unless you are here to help me escape." the she-kit looked up at him with a sly smile. "Because that would be so helpful."
