Birds flew from branch to branch with tufts of hay in their beaks, weaving new nests in the crooks of whatever trees were left. A long-legged spider plucked the dew off of its partially-finished web, which was strung up between two stalks of grass and trembled in the morning breeze. Tendrils of mist clung to the muddy earth. Overheard, the sun shone weakly, bursting through the low, thin clouds; remnants from the light rain that had begun to fall just a few hours before. It bathed the fields below, murky puddles shot through with gold, until the entire territory seemed to glow with warmth.
A long-legged she-cat padded through the territory, her tail-tip twitching meditatively. The soft, quiet hour just after sunrise was Cloud's favorite time of day. She loved how it changed everything. Dark, creeping shadows that had once frightened her became things of beauty, and even the dullest clay-filled pools were captivating. She was never able to appreciate the glory of sunrise from Skyclan's territory, and during her walk, she had paused many times to marvel at just how many colors the sky had become. She hesitated now, her white paw hovering over a puddle. She sighed. With a twitch of her ears, she stepped over it, taking only a moment to peer over her shoulder with wide blue eyes. Cloud couldn't afford to hesitate for too long- she didn't want to be caught by the morning patrol. No; this time, Cloud wanted everything to be on her own terms.

The timing was perfect. Brindlestar had yet to return to Windclan, and her deputy had been named Finchstar in her absence. Sharptooth would've urged her to take action before the former leader returned. The black-and-white she-cat walked faster, casting a quick glance skyward as if the tabby warrior was looking down on her. She owed a lot to the grizzled old she-cat, and wherever she was now, Cloud hoped that she was happy.
Cloud's black-rimmed ears perked as she reached the crest of a small hill. Below her was a sprawled-out series of woven nests; some of their occupants were beginning to stir, and others were empty. The rogue cleared her throat nervously and began to approach them, her tail-tip twitching in time with her steps. Already, some warriors (or were they apprentices? Most Windclan cats were tall, and she couldn't quite tell) were beginning to move towards her. "I need to talk to F-Finchstar." She had rehearsed what she would say for ages in her mind, but the tremor in her voice threw her off balance. She cleared her throat again, trying to assume the noble expression that she'd seen her father use whenever he'd addressed Skyclan.

The sky had been beautiful, clouds billowed overhead, and birds chittered through the moor grass. WindClan's territory was finally beginning to heal. The puddles that once sat in large divots grew smaller, and warriors had been working hard to shore up the gorse wall of camp. Finchstar's paws were sore from weaving thorn thickets into the nursery, but Barleytuft's mate was due to give birth anytime now, he wouldn't let his offspring be cold. It was a repetitive task, one that required no thought or effort, Finchstar needed it. If he were to stop for even a moment, then his mind would drift back to his dead mate, her green eyes fading out. But the leader kept himself occupied, Brookclover would have wanted clan life to march on.

Grousepaw would need to be made a warrior soon, and of course, Barleytuft and Graybriar's kits would need mentors in a few moons. Finchstar wondered what he would feel in the next moons to come. Would he feel better? Or would he be more depressed then even the beetles in the dirt? The leader had more of his lives to waste, he was tasked with carrying WindClan through the storm, but the storm had taken away all his assets, leaving the tom with a broken heart and meager wits. Aspenpaw was confined to camp, a medicine cat of SkyClan making frequent visits to see him. Finchstar knew he should do the same. Aspenpaw was his own apprentice, after all. But that task was not an easy or repetitive one. Visiting his friend, playing the game of wits, it was difficult. And Finchstar did not have the capacity for difficult things, his heart was shattered.

There was a commotion by the camp entrance, and a crowd of warriors split to reveal a black and white she-cat, smelling of the forest. She was no clan cat, Finchstar had not seen her at any gatherings. She spoke his name, and the leader took note of her desires. What could the loner possibly want with him? Narrowing his yellow eyes, the orange and white tabby padded up to her small frame, letting out a soft grin. It was a poor façade for his broken soul, but conversing with this loner cat would be a numbing task. Anything to dull the pain. "You are looking for Finchstar?" He questioned, knowing full-well of who she sought after. "I went on patrol with him last sunrise. Come, I'll take you to his den." Perhaps today, Finchstar would be a warrior. Perhaps today, he could through all his cares away, and run with the grasses once more. It seemed the she-cat knew no difference, and no harm would be done from this game. The truth would be revealed soon, and the tom wanted answers.

"Here's the spot." He remarked, stopping in his own nest, but this time as a stranger. "Perhaps the leader is on patrol. I can keep you company while you wait." Finchstar smiled, gesturing for the black and white she-cat to sit. "Tell me, loner, what is your name? I find that cats not of a clan carry interesting names. Starlord, for example; he was no leader, and yet carried the word "star." Curious, if you ask me." The tom sighed, wrapping his striped tail around his paws. He was sinking into the conversation, safe from his mind. This was good. "If I may, a question." He wondered if the life of a loner was truly as freeing as Finchstar imagined it. Perhaps fate would lead him there. "Do you love someone? Did you leave them?"

Cloud smiled weakly as a stranger approached. Her ears twitched as he spoke, although she said nothing as he lead her towards the Windclan leader's den. Perhaps it was lucky that Finchstar wasn't in camp- the young she-cat didn't think she'd be able to muster the energy to treat him with the courtesy that his rank called for.

She sat down with a grateful nod, studying the warrior with clear-blue eyes. He was difficult to gauge; he walked and spoke with the grace of a young warrior, but his tired expression would suit an elder far better. His ginger fur wasn't marred with scars, so his battle experience was surely minimal. The one thing that stood out to the black-and-white she-cat was how close in height she was to him. She'd almost forgotten how old she was, now that she didn't have a clan name to go off of. It struck her that she'd be at least as old as Mintwhisker had been when the Medicine cat helped her leave Skyclan.

"Tell me, loner, what is your name?"
"I've had a few." There was something strangely liberating about talking to a stranger. He knew nothing about her, and she, him. Cloud felt as if she could say anything, open her heart, share her secrets. She felt free. It was easy to let your guard down if there was a chance you'd never see the cat you were talking to again. "I..." Still, something stopped her from telling him about her first name. Lilypaw was something sacred, untouchable. Besides, she wasn't sure that she wanted him to know about her past in Skyclan. She knew from experience that deserters weren't likely to be welcomed into a clan with open arms. "I'm calling myself Cloud, now."
The tom's next question caught her off guard. "Do you love someone? Did you leave them?" Something in the ginger warrior's voice changed, and Cloud's tail-tip twitched. For a moment, silence stretched between them, and the young she-cat stiffened.
"Yes." She loved something. Her old life, in Skyclan, feeling like she belonged. Looking up to Tinystar and her father, and staying up late at night in the nursery retelling their stories to a rapt audience of kits. Sunny afternoons spent sharing tongues with Dandeliondapple, her mentor, her mother-figure, her confidant. When the snow fell, she spent her nights curled up beside her sisters and brother, warm and safe between them.
She missed that part of her, but she knew that there was no way to get Lilypaw back.
"But she left me."

A pause. "Did you... love someone?" Perhaps that was the answer- rain and exhaustion didn't hurt this warrior. He was missing something too. Suddenly, Cloud felt a rush of embarrassment. This was a stranger after all. "I-I mean... Sorry, I don't even know your name."

Cloud... Finchstar smiled, a rare thing. The loner carried herself differently, like someone who had grown up with structure and a code. An interesting thing, indeed. Her answer was curious. Even a loner like herself was tied with strings, the leader was naïve to think otherwise. Abandoned, Cloud spoke. It drove the orange and white tabby to tilt his head. The black and white she-cat carried a thoughtfulness behind her eyes, and Finchstar found himself subconsciously leaning forward, ever interested. It felt good, to be in the presence of another who had experienced what he had. Brookclover had not abandoned the tom, but StarClan had torn them apart, casting the leader back into the mortal realm, against his better wishes.

The grass swayed and for a moment, Finchstar thought could lose himself in the conversation. It was working, the distraction, and it didn't hurt his paws like the gorse thorns did. Sunlight flickered and his yellow eyes blinked lazily, watching Cloud with a burning curiosity. He hadn't felt much emotion ever since Brookclover's death, but there was nothing like helping others to tear away the feelings of grief. The loner's question took Finchstar by surprise, but he should have been ready for it. In the game of wits, both parties could take shots, and he had left his defenses down.

"It's quite alright." Finchstar sighed, shooing away Cloud's apology. "I did love someone...yes. I still do. But they've left this world, and I think a part of me died with them." Who was he, to vent to some wind-blown loner? Her wise blue eyes were enticing, the perfect prey to receive a heart-strung story. But Cloud's story was just as interesting, and Finchstar found his desire for hers was stronger than the removal of his. "What brings you here? To WindClan?" The leader flexed his claws, pelt warm with the sun. "Tell me, what does one do, when their love leaves them? Did it drive you to adventure? Did it lead your paws here?" Finchstar felt as if he was on the verge of a discovery, some kind of change from the mundane. It would be something to shatter the course of his depression, small, but still something. It was strange, that a loner should be the one to bring it to him, but fate was a fickle thing. Finchstar had been betrayed by it, but he was still bound by its laws.

"I think a part of me died with them." The black-patched she-cat blinked, looking at the warrior with new eyes. They were the same. Cloud could remember the day Rippedstar died, the confusion, the loss. That, paired with Sedgestrike's training, had left her a completely different cat. Sometimes she wondered who she would be if she still had her father; if he had been around to protect her from his apprentice. Luckily, she'd had her siblings to support her. During her early apprenticehood, her older sisters had basically become her parents. She could remember Mintwhisker's comments: For she-cats growing up without a mother, it was remarkable how well they'd all taken to it. It was true- grooming, training, making sure Lilypaw ate and slept; all of these things came naturally to them.
She'd found them annoying, then. To Lilypaw, their love was a burden, always getting in the way of fun that she could have and adventures she could partake in. There were times where she hated them with all of her heart, shouting that she wished they had never been born, that they should've gone with Rippedstar to fight those dogs. Now, Cloud wished she had loved them, told them she loved them, while they were still alive.

The patched she-cat glanced at the golden tom. Cloud wanted to learn more about him before she told him about her past in Skyclan. She didn't know if she was ready to take that final leap into the unknown, and she couldn't yet trust him to guide her if she lost her way.
Finchstar would arrive sooner or later, and until then, she was content to watch the orange tom speak, and answer his questions when he asked them.

"When someone's love leaves them..." She turned her gaze away from the tom, her horizon-blue eyes searching for Skyclan's treeline. "They freeze. At least at first. Nothing moves- nothing changes. It feels like you're stuck in one moment in time." She paused for a moment. She wanted to tell him everything, but she still balanced on the edge, too scared to trust the warrior, but too enticed to remain silent. If he knew that she left Skyclan, would she even let her explain why? Would she be escorted out of camp, or merely told to leave? Would she be forced to wander on the outskirts of the clans forever?
Despite her doubts, Cloud felt like she was ready to take the first step, to give him a glimpse into her past.
"The first time I lost someone,- my father -I almost lost myself, too. I was still a kit, and when they brought back his body, I... I didn't understand, at least not at first. If it weren't for my sisters, and my brother, I'm sure I wouldn't have been able to survive. They took care of me, fed me, taught me, but most importantly, they helped me hold onto my home.
"Eventually, all but one joined my father, but... it still felt like they were with me. It wasn't until..."
Until Moss told her. Skyclan wasn't her home, they weren't her family, she didn't share a drop of blood with her denmates. Everything she'd built herself on was fake. It had destroyed her.

Nothing moves. Nothing changes. Cloud was a wise cat, which couldn't shock Finchstar. Over his few moons alive, the tom had learned each and every living thing had some semblance of wisdom, but hearing the wisdom apply itself to his own life was difficult. He wanted to fight it, to claw at Cloud's words. She was right, of course. Nothing had changed since he had lost Brookclover to that pit, he was sorrowful, depressed beyond repair. Was their hope? Was he evil to believe in it even after all that had happened? Finchstar had come to scorn his optimism, it was pitiful, a stubborn thing that kept wanting to cling to his pelt when he wished for darkness. It was as if he was locked in a battle with his very emotions, wanting to tear at the part of himself that pleaded for anything more than the mundane. He would never love again, never live again. Finchstar was merely a shell of himself, walking the moor, a defeated tom.

Cloud's father, lost. Finchstar pricked his ears at the words, wanting to throw himself back into the distraction. She spoke of the rest of her family, the cycle of grief, and their ascension to join the first dead. The loner had lost so much, and Finchstar meant her blue eyes, seeing himself there. His orange and white tabby face reflected in her pupils, his glazed yellow eyes staring back to haunt him. Both had lost, and now here they both were. Finchstar wondered if she knew where she was going, he certainly didn't know what his life would entail. Empathy, it felt good to share it, to stare into her eyes and feel her pain. Cloud, a wandering loner, strung up with more emotions then Finchstar thought possible. He was naïve to believe a life alone would fix his problems. The life of a loner didn't tear away the baggage, it only tore away friends. "Are you lonely?" The leader questioned, his voice almost forced, emotional, like the answer to the question would save his soul. His façade had failed, and even his favorite game of conversation could not save him from his grief. "Why are you here, Cloud? What brings you to WindClan?" Finchstar's eyes narrowed, pointed upwards as they conveyed his desperate sadness, now spilling out for all to see.

Cloud's turned her blue eyes towards the ground, her heartbeat leaping like a nervous rabbit, but her body completely still. Was she lonely? Time spent alone in the barn, with nothing but mice and hay for company. Living in Skyclan, knowing that everything she'd built her life on was a lie, that she was never who she thought she was; that was lonely. But in the mountains, surrounded by clan cats, each with a warm smile, a piece of fresh-kill, and a story to tell... that felt more like home.
"I was." She said.
And then she took a deep breath.
And started her story.

"I grew up in the clans." She began, hardly pausing for breath, terrified that if she stopped she wouldn't be able to start again. "My father, Rippedstar, was the leader of Skyclan, but he didn't let that stop him from spending time with us- my mother died when I was born, you see, so he was our sole caretaker. My father rarely talked about her, so I didn't know that I was missing anything."

It was like a boulder rolling down the hill. Her voice faltered in the beginning but as soon as she started, she found that it grew easier to speak than to stay silent. Soon, it felt impossible to stop talking. She was pouring out her life story, her inner turmoil, every thought that had gone through her head. She didn't stop to think. She knew that if she did, she'd realize just how foolish she was being.
"When my father died... I was the only one who wasn't an apprentice at the time. I was smaller than the others, weaker. I was the last born, and I always thought that... well, the medicine cats always said my mother died because she had one kit too many. When my father died, torn up by a pack of dogs in Twolegplace, they brought what was left of his body back into camp. I was apprenticed shortly after. My mentor..." Her tattered ears twitched, but she didn't stop speaking. No matter how much it hurt, she knew now that she wouldn't be able to carry on if she didn't get this off her chest. "My mentor was Sedgestrike, my father's former apprentice. Rippedstar wasn't perfect, and although he tried to teach Sedgestrike, I think in the end, h-he broke him. My sisters told me that Sedgestrike was cruel to me because he wanted revenge for what my father did to him." There was so much to tell. She hoped she'd be able to tell him all of it before Finchstar arrived.
"That didn't fix what Sedgestrike did. I was a different cat, hurt and angry, a-and I lashed out at my sisters when they tired to tell me what was going on.

"Sedgestrike did what he said he would, and I became an excellent fighter. After Poplarstar was killed by the dogs, Tinystar chose me to join him and several others to finally put an end to the dogs' reign of terror. Fighting alongside him, I felt like I belonged. My father, my sisters, they were my family, but so was Tinystar, and all of Skyclan. We were connected by blood and bone, something that couldn't be broken or forgotten. After the battle, I remember feeling... different. New. All the pain I'd been through, the death of my sisters, my father, Sedgestrike, it was all washed away."

Her claws dug into the dusty earth. "That didn't last long. Before she died, my last sister told me the truth.
I wasn't a Skyclan cat. Rippedstar, my father, was born in Windclan."
She remembered the shock, the denial. She remembered stumbling through the forest that stormy night, fighting the owl, talking to Mintwhisker and Tinystar. That whirlwind was the final blow that knocked Lilypaw off her feet.
"Do you know what it's like to lose everything you thought you had? To learn that everything you knew was a lie? I know that blood isn't what makes a clan, but... I was adrift. I had nothing left. A-and Skyclan wasn't there. Knowing that we were tied was one thing, but now that I was able to take a step back, I could see everything hidden behind the lie.
When I was apprenticed to Sedgestrike, nobody did anything. When my father died, nobody comforted me or my siblings. When I was an apprentice, set adrift, nobody took care of me, nobody asked if I was okay. I was surrounded by strangers.
"The only one who saw what was happening was Mintwhisker. She came up with a plan, guided me to the Windclan border, and told me to return to Skyclan if Brindlestar turned me away. I knew I wouldn't be able to step foot in that forest again, though. It would destroy me from the inside out."
The she-cat blinked.
And was filled with a sense of horror. "Oh Starclan, I'm sorry, I didn't mean to... I-I," She felt so ashamed. This stranger didn't ask for her life story. What would he even say? She'd ruined everything. "Look, I-I didn't... I-I... I..."

A clan cat, Finchstar scolded himself for not seeing it earlier. Cloud let her story drift through the clearing, and the leader loved every bit of it. The constants, the twists, the turns. There was nothing quite like a story, and why would there be? A few words, strung together, telling the tale of another life, stitched together before his very eyes. Perhaps this is what Finchstar needed. To drown himself in the stories of others, and to forget his own.

Rippedstar... Cloud spoke, SkyClan's late leader. Finchstar remembered Ryecloud listing off all of the forest's past kings and queens. He was enamored with their names then, curious about their reign. But it was more than a nursery tale, but a reality. Here, before him stood the daughter of one of the giants. The offspring of the great leaders that walked so long ago. During his apprenticeship, the orange and white tabby thought their names felt so distant, yet fate had brought him here. A strange thing, it was.

She went on to speak of her SkyClan mentor, and Finchstar winced at his treachery. He seemed to be a beast, and if Cloud could smile because of his death, the leader didn't doubt his evil intent. And the truth, the twist. Finchstar leaned forward as Cloud spoke to him a secret that seemed ever so important. Rippedstar, a WindClan cat. It was funny really, the ties that were strung before Finchstar was ever born. That was why she was here, the clan cat - turned - loner. To belong. The leader didn't blame her, SkyClan seemed a mess.

Cloud spoke of her intent, and her strength seemed to falter. The leader was wrapped up in her story, rocked slowly back and forth as her every word drifted him into her own life. And she stopped, apologized, and meant his eyes. "Shhhhh." Finchstar whispered, resting his tail over her paw. "Why are you ashamed? If anything, I should be thanking you. Stories are curious things, but I've grown a liking to them. A gateway into another life that's not mine. Yours. Yours was a tale." He wondered what drove Cloud to do the things she did. Safety, maybe. Or a sense of belonging? "I've only heard tales of Rippedstar and the clan he led. When I was an apprentice, he seemed so distant. Yet here you are, the daughter of a king. And you were never once SkyClan. Funny, how fate tears away all comforts, leaving us naked, exposed, and lost." Finchstar's voice was borderline angry, the parallels he drew from Cloud's life too closely resembled his own. Oh, what a thing a story was. He had begun to like the black-and-white she-cat, and began to love her story. "But your blood means nothing to me." His voice softened out as he meant Cloud's blue eyes with those of yellow. "If you look at WindClan, what are we really? I myself was born here, yes. But Graybriar was a SkyClan cat, and destiny pulled her here. Murkpaw, an orphaned loner, and yet he's just as much a WindClan cat as the rest of us. I would die for each and every one of these cats, lay down my life for theirs. But it's not the name of WindClan I fight for, but for their souls. The strength of the cat is the clan, but the strength of the clan is the cat. WindClan would be nothing without these wonderful cats. And you, Cloud, you could be one of them." Finchstar sucked in a breath, close to something, on the verge of an enigma. "It doesn't matter who your father was. You could be the daughter of Lichenmask for all I care. Your soul, your intentions, your actions. That is what makes you a cat. And that is what makes WindClan."

He was still ever so curious, the life of a loner was still so tempting. Strings, no more strings would hold him them. Yet even Cloud, now, on her search for belonging was just as tied down as the rest of them. Perhaps Finchstar could never outrun his grief, only keep it at bay. A story, it was enough to spark a small amount of emotion in him once again. Finchstar decided he would follow the wind as he once did, Cloud had given him answers, but there was still so much left to discover. A wonderful soul, sitting in the clearing Finchstar hadn't left for sunrises. Perhaps it was the lives of others that could heal him, he would wrap himself in them like a wool nest, and he would love them as if each and every one was his own life. Cloud. Thank you. "You, loner, have done more for me than you know. And I am ever so curious. Now, forgive me, I haven't properly introduced myself." He threw the façade away, letting down his warrior coat and once again pulling the responsibilities of a leader upon himself. It was ever so heavy, but the power that came with it would be wielded well, even if done during sorrow. Even if it was his last act as a clan cat. "I never expected to learn a lesson from a loner today, but here I am. Perhaps we're all tied to our burdens, and maybe we can never escape them, but you carry them well. For that, I admire you. Here me as I say, I, Finchstar welcome you to WindClan. I would be honored to be your clanmate."
