Hailpaw did not quite know how she had made it to Highstones. Even though the force of the floodwaters had lessened after some time, the situation remained just as treacherous. One wrong step, one slip up, and she would have perished within their depths. Having never made the journey to Highstones, she knew little of the route there. Throughout her apprenticeship, however, she had talked to many who had. Those fragmented memories were what guided her; they were all she had to rely on. It was a miracle that she did not drown that day. Perhaps the only reason she had been spared a watery death was StarClan's mercy. Looking down from on high, they had laid eyes on a struggling young she-cat far from her home. Her time had not yet come, for they had decided to give her one more chance. When the white of mountain peaks flashed against the stormy sky, Hailpaw realized that her intuition had led her in the right direction. The surge of hope had given her enough strength to press on. Now she was standing at the base of the Highstones, water running in little rivulets off her thick white fur. The ground was dry. At last, she had escaped the river's reach.

How many days had it taken her to get here? Hailpaw had no desire to dwell on the hardships she had endured during the journey. In the first place, the trip to Highstones was usually made after ingesting the appropriate herbs. Even with those herbs, the trip often took about half a day. With the current circumstances, the difficulty had only doubled. Lost and alone, Hailpaw's first night after the flood had truly been the Dark Forest. For all she had known, she could have been heading in some random direction, travelling farther and farther away from Highstones with every step. She had only herself to keep company with. Sharper than ever before, Hailpaw had felt the sting of loneliness. If her family had not headed to Highstones as she had predicted they would, all her efforts would be for naught. For what or for whom did she fight? From the moment of her consciousness to the present, what had everything she had done amounted to? Had she ever done anything worthwhile? What was the point in fighting, if she no longer had a family to share her joys with? These questions, buried in the deepest portion of her heart, had begun to worm themselves out. She could no longer shut them off.

Is there any point to my living?

As soon as Hailpaw stepped paw into the Highstones, her sense of smell was immediately assaulted by strong clan scent. RiverClan, WindClan, ShadowClan, SkyClan, and... even ThunderClan—her time spent in previous Gatherings allowed her to easily pick the mingled scents apart. All five clans were here! Her assumption had not been mistaken. By extension of that thought, her family was nearby as well. They had to be. At that realization, an overwhelming relief flooded through her being. Her legs practically giving out beneath her, she plopped unto her haunches. In a little while, she would be able to see them again. She would—she would be able to see them again. The momentary happiness draining away, a cold weight settled itself in her stomach. But would they be happy to see you? A voice asked quietly within her mind. The last time she had seen her family, Leopardstar had condemned her for maiming a RiverClan apprentice. In reality, she had not truly been trying to protect her sister. She had torn Icepaw's eye out and beaten him into the ground even after he had been rendered defenseless. Using Ridgepaw as an excuse, she had been nothing more than a hypocrite trying to hide her twisted, grotesque nature. She had enjoyed making sport of a defeated opponent, and that pleasure was what had driven her to go so far. She had known the truth deep down, but she had tried to deny it. Her actions had deeply hurt her family members and betrayed the trust her clanmates had in her. The last time they had spoken, she had shut herself off and pushed them away. Who would be happy to see such a cat again?

Hailpaw clenched her jaws tightly. She had not come so far only to turn back at the last moment. The day that the flood had first broken forth, she had made up her mind never to run away again. Standing, the ThunderClan apprentice headed in the direction of the strongest scents. She could tell that a large group of cats had gathered ahead. While she was hesitant to reveal herself so quickly, she needed to gather information and observe the situation.

The scattered, wearied state of the clans made it possible for Hailpaw to slip into their midst. While a few odd looks were pointed her way, the stocky she-cat shrugged them off easily enough. After a whole moon of living in no-clan land, it was no surprise that she could be mistaken for a loner. Still, the faintest scent of her home remained with her. Staying away from the RiverClan and ThunderClan cats, she lingered at the edges of the crowd. The sight of the five clans working together once again was somewhat surprising, yet not totally unexpected. Only the time of trial would tie these cats together, just as Lichenmask had in his reign of terror. Upon a closer inspection, many cats who should have been present were absent. Brindlestar, Scorchstar, and even Leopardstar were nowhere to be seen. The sight caused her heart to thump heavily within her chest, and she swallowed. Had they been swept away in the flood? Casualties had been more numerous than she had expected. As she swept her pale-yellow gaze from side to side, the young she-cat quickly became aware of the fact that she could not see her family members. For a second, cold panic swept over her in a wave. However, an all too familiar spiky ginger pelt soon entered her vision.

Pricklepaw! Hailpaw blinked in surprise to see him with the other leaders. He stood tall even when faced with Jaystar and Tinystar. What was he doing there? He was a medicine cat. Was he taking charge of ThunderClan now that Leopardstar was gone? Truth be told, she would not find such a development strange. Their time as kits was so far behind them now. Pricklepaw had grown more than she ever had. That he would be worthy to take up leadership was only fitting. The way she was now, she could only gaze after him from afar. She made no effort to suppress the dull pang she felt at that moment. This was her punishment—the consequences of all the time she had wasted. Retreating towards the rocky wall, she allowed the shadows to swallow her up. It would be some time before she could talk to Pricklepaw.

The meeting had ended some time ago, and the various leaders scattered to their clans. Ever since, Pricklepaw had been busy attending to the wounds of his clanmate. Hailpaw sat in silence, patiently waiting. At last, he seemed to have a moment of spare time to rest. Taking advantage of his stepping away from their clanmates, the white-furred apprentice intercepted him. "... Pricklepaw." Words froze on her tongue, and only his name awkwardly rolled off. "I'm back." As the last thing she wanted was to be seen by either Jaystar or Lightstep, she had made certain that the two of them were out of RiverClan's sight.

Pricklebush didn't let it show, but he was exhausted. His work wasn't the easiest, generally, but it was more than that. The stress was really beginning to get to him. He'd seen half of his Clanmates swept away by a freak flash flood, listened to their calls for help and been unabke to do anything about it. If he hadn't had a kit safe in his jaws, his panic might have overcome his common sense and let him jump in to try and rescue someone... even though he probably couldn't swim if his life depended on it. Plus, he hadn't even begun to train an apprentice yet- he'd barely gotten his full name. ThunderClan, or what was left of it, couldn't be left without a medicine cat again. Especially not on his watch. But the side effect of somehow managing to scramble his way to freedom, and rescuing the kit instead of his herbs, was that now he was stuck in charge of his remaining Clanmates and didn't even have the right plants to heal most of the injuries. Some shoddy replacement for Leopardstar or Marshstorm he was. And seeing that happy-go-lucky nuisance Briarpaw up staging him with a rescued bundle of herbs didn't help... nor did the fact that through his emotions, StarClan was urging him to leave Highstones- and their ally, WindClan- to set off into the unknown, accompanied only by Jaystar, who was still leader for some reason, and some random ShadowClan warrior who had apparently been put in charge by his leader. Not by any means an ideal situation.

But he made the best of it, as he always did. Wouldn't make it very far in this mouse-brained job if he didn't. After some scavenging and a little borrowing from Briarpaw, swallowing his pride, he'd tended to as many wounds as he could. None of what he would've ideally used, like poppy seeds for all the poor cats in shock, but he made do. He wasn't keeping track of time, but the sun had moved almost halfway across the sky by the time he looked up. The fluffy tan tom let out a breath- half huff, half sigh- and looked at the two leaves he had left. He couldn't do much else, and his paws were shaking so much... He had to rest.

The second that Pricklebush settled down, though, the thoughts that he'd been pushing away for hours returned with a vengeance. Where were his sisters? Would his mother be okay? All his herbs were gone... Were his other Clanmates dead or only stranded somewhere? Why had StarClan done this? Were they punishing him again? Was there some obvious solution he wasn't seeing? Was this all his fault?... His weary, sage-green eyes slid closed, and he pushed the nagging inner voice away. He didn't have time for worries. He... never did.... All he needed was a few seconds of rest.... But he shook himself awake. He had to get up, walk somewhere else. No way could he go to sleep here. But when he got up to move again, he saw a strikingly familiar she-cat staring him in the face. A cat he'd known all his life, but hadn't seen since she was sent away for her mouse-brained mistake.... "Hailpaw?" His eyes widened, and he couldn't process his thoughts correctly. "You... I... What? How did you....?"

Pricklepaw seemed completely flabbergasted. Within those familiar sage-green eyes that were now stretched wide, Hailpaw saw herself reflected in their depths. There was nothing unexpected about his reaction. She supposed it was only natural. Ever since she had left with the RiverClan patrol more than a whole moon ago, neither of them had seen the other's face until this moment. She was certain that he had heard of her escape. On the way to RiverClan camp, the small patrol had been attacked by a wounded fox. While the RiverClan warriors had been engaged in battle, even defending her, she had seized her chance and fled. It was a choice she doubted anyone had ever expected her to make. In reality, the idea of leaving her clan was not entirely new to her. From time to time, she had entertained the thought. Perhaps the rogue's blood in her veins had really been an influence. She was a fighter, someone who wanted to live a free life doing what she truly enjoyed; at times, the clan's rules had seemed all too stifling. She had always pushed the notion away, on account of her family. She had thought that she could never leave them. But then Icepaw had happened. When faced with an opportunity of escape, she had instinctively taken it without any further thought. It was a decision that had been partly impulsive. She did not expect anyone to understand her reasoning, even Pricklepaw. She had been fine with being resented from afar, thinking that there was no going back. But now, here she was. After everything that had happened, she was standing before him again. Who could blame Pricklepaw for his shock? She might have been one of the last cats he had expected to see at Highstones.

If ever there had been an awkward reunion, this one would certainly qualify. "Yes, Pricklepaw. It's me, Hailpaw." The white she-cat forced out a teasing tone of voice. "You really didn't think you would see me again, did you?" Her smile faltered, growing cramped. The discomfort in that scene was almost thick enough to be cut with a claw. Perhaps she had made a mistake in showing herself to him. Now that she had arrived at Highrocks, she was safe from the flood. She could have gone on living the life of a loner after surreptitiously ensuring her clanmates' safety. Had there been any real necessity to meet Pricklepaw face to face? Yes. Yes, there was, she argued fiercely. In all the time that she had spent watching the ThunderClan cats, waiting for a chance to speak with her brother, she had not caught a glimpse of Ridgepaw, Beartooth, Streampaw, or Gladepaw. She had to find out if they were safe. In addition, she had promised herself that she would never run away again. There was no point in backing out at the last moment. If she did not face Pricklepaw now, she never would. Hailpaw swallowed, calming herself down again. Unconsciously, she had been scuffing at the ground with one dirty forepaw. As she straightened up, her expression grew solemn. "There must be a lot you'd like to say to me. I promise I'll explain everything—why I disobeyed Leopardstar, why I ran away from the clans. I have no excuse. But, Pricklepaw, please tell me first. Where is the rest of our family? They're safe, aren't they? They're not in any danger?" Anxiety flashed in her pale yellow eyes as she spoke. They had to be all right.

This couldn't be real. It had to be his dreams haunting him again. Pricklebush blinked hard, shook his head, and willed himself to wake up. It was too painful, not really being with her... but when his eyes opened, to his wonder, she was still there. "Hailpaw," he whispered hoarsely. For so long, he'd missed her, feeling so estranged from every member of his family. Beepaw was long dead. Streampaw and Gladepaw had never liked him. Ridgelight always preferred Beartooth, for reasons he could never understand. Hailpaw had been one of his closest siblings for as long as he could remember, despite their diverging paths. They hadn't been so different as kits, but when he was forced to take the path of a medicine cat, his personality had changed. She, however, seemed not to have changed a bit. She was still the mouse-brained, battle-hungry she-cat she'd always been. Always getting into trouble, causing Blizzardshine grief, teasing him mercilessly and beating him up whenever she got the chance.

And he loved her so, so much.

The medicine cat flung himself forwards, almost smothering the smaller she-cat, squeezing her tight with his spiky tail and burying his face in her fur as if he would never let go. Tears streamed from his eyes, and the normally stoic tom's body shook with repressed sobs as his emotions finally overcame him. His sister was back. His sister was back. "Hailpaw," he whimpered, "you stupid, stupid cat. I missed you so much." After moons of keeping his feelings inside, they tore out of his chest with a vengeance, reducing him to a pile of weakness. He'd be mad at her for doing that to him if he wasn't so darn happy. "Where have you been? Where have you been? Mom was worried sick, I was worried sick, when we got the news. I'd never have forgiven myself if.... I could've stopped..." Finally, he came to himself. With a shaky sigh, the tom stepped back a little, staring into Hailpaw's eyes. He could at least answer her questions- and then, she would answer his. "First of all, it's Pricklebush now," he corrected her gently, a small touch of pride puffing out his chest. "I got my full name while you were gone. Guess StarClan finally made a good decision for once. As for our family..." His eyes grew slightly worried. "I don't know. Except for Blizzardshine, and you, the rest of them got swept away by the flood. I can only hope they're safe."

Of all the things Pricklepaw could have done, the one thing Hailpaw had not been expecting was an embrace. One moment, her brother was standing in front of her, still looking as if he could not quite process her presence. In the next, he had sprung forward. His fluffy tail curled tightly around her, and he pressed his face into her white fur. "Pricklepaw...?" She began, uncertainly. What kind of tackle was this supposed to be? Such was the first thought that flashed across her mind. She could understand his being upset, and she could understand his hating her now. Perhaps those responses were to be expected, after all that she had done. Even if he were not quite as angry as she had expected, she was still prepared for some form of criticism. But, this... Her features twisting with a mixture of confusion, she could only stand there in an awkward freeze.

"Hailpaw, you stupid, stupid cat. I missed you so much."

When she heard those words, Hailpaw lost her breath, and her pale yellow eyes grew wide. She could feel the dampness of tears on her pelt, literally experience the trembling that was taking hold of Pricklepaw. Her brother—her strong, intelligent, sharp-tongued brother—was crying. He was crying because of her. Even when StarClan had chosen the spiky-furred tom to become a medicine cat, ripping the path of a warrior away from him, he had never openly shed a tear. What had she done? To think it was possible for someone to miss her this much. At that moment, she felt a stab of pain sharper than any physical blow could cause. Of course it was possible. She had missed him too, more than she had been willing to admit. In the past moon, she had been nothing but miserable. "I'm sorry." She choked out. "I've always been a mouse-brain. You know that. It was never your fault." Lowering her head, she rested her chin on his head. This familiar scent was one that she had doubted she would ever breathe in again. Yet here they were.

As the medicine cat pulled away, the pale yellow gaze locked with the sage green one. There was so much to be said, so much they had to catch up on. But first, there were more important things to deal with. Hailpaw chose to listen silently while her brother spoke. Her expression betrayed little of the emotion that swirled within her. When he finished speaking, the white-furred apprentice simply twitched one of her pale ears. For a moment, there was a blank look in her eyes. She opened her mouth only to close it again. Pricklepaw was no longer a 'paw, but Pricklebush. As for the rest of their family, most of them had been claimed by the flood. Her features crinkled with the difficulty of choosing a single expression. She had been gone for a moon—only one moon. Was she to be happy or sad about these developments? On one paw, she was happy for her brother. With everything he had done for ThunderClan, he had definitely earned his full name. But on the other paw, the distance between the two of them had only grown more vivid. Not to mention the rest of their siblings... Blizzardshine. She needed to see Blizzardshine, needed to make sure their mother was truly safe.

Hailpaw's chest ached with a pain that she could not put words to. Why did she feel this way? Why did it hurt this much? She hated the pain that could not be mitigated with herbs. She hated the enemy that she could not fight with her claws.

Drawing a deep breath, the white she-cat put on a small smirk. She had to force her feelings down—deep down, where they would be unable to affect her. "Our siblings are tough. We have to believe that they'll be fine." Oh, really? "StarClan won't claim them so easily, not again. Beepaw's protecting them." But Beepaw hated Beartooth. "Congratulations, Pricklebush. I'm sorry that I'm so late. They really did choose the right name for you, didn't they?" She raised one nonexistent eyebrow in a jocular manner. There was a brief pause, before she finally added solemnly, "I've come back, brother..."
