Boring. Boring was the word for everything these days. Hollypaw was too smart for her own good, and these past moons in ShadowClan territory had failed to stimulate her mind. It felt so frustrating... No one understood her. Not that it mattered, but at least having her clanmates around her provided her with thinking material. But today was a quiet day, most of the warriors were out on patrols, and the camp was empty.
Hollypaw had made her way into the forest, long fur fluffed up against the icy wind. It cut through her pelt mercilessly. The sky was a foreboding gray color, and the scent of snow clung to the air. Soon ShadowClan's bog would be covered in white. Furrowing her brow, Hollypaw trailed through the nettles, head down, frustrated. The black and white she-cat knew it wasn't wise to be out on the territory without her mentor, but she wasn't one for rule-following. Where am I even going? Hollypaw asked herself, feeling a cold nip in her paws. She wanted to get away, to run from the cloud that seemed to plague her mind. But the forest had other ideas.
It was the flash of red under a pine tree that would be Hollypaw's demise. The sight of the fox made the apprentice gasp. A chill shot up Hollypaw's spine as she turned to run. It was the first instinct, to get away. Avoid. Hide. Nettles shot up from behind the beast as he closed his jaws around Hollypaw's scruff. He shook her hard, causing a squeak to escape her jaws before she was thrown to the ground. Hollypaw's mind was a haze. It all happened so quickly, one minute she was flying over the bog, and the next she was propped up against a tree, blood soaking into the white parts of her fur. The apprentice sputtered, watching blearily as the russet fox stalked closer to make the killing bite. Hollypaw gazed up to the sky, a small patch that was visible between the bows of the pine tree. Hopefully Starclan will be more interesting than here... The world went black, and the lithe she-cat slumped to her side, now on a quest to find out whether or not her thoughts were true...
Unknown to Hollypaw, the fox trailed off into the forest after delivering the last fatal blow, leaving the apprentice alone on the forest floor. Perhaps it was the sound of an approaching cat that spooked it, or maybe the grace of Starclan, who had gained another cat for their ranks.
