Limping through the territory with his gaze at the ground, Ryecloud didn't know where he was going or really doing. As long as he kept walking, he'd be fine. Originally, his absence from camp was supposed to be from a hunting patrol, but after several failed attempts at catching even the biggest and fattest of rabbits, he decided to give up. So here he was, wandering across the territory with only the conciliating songs of moorland birds and his thoughts to keep him company.

He wasn't meant to be a warrior, any cat could see that. Why Ashstar had given him his warrior name, seeing as though he had a grave disadvantage to being successful at the warrior life, was beyond him. Maybe she'd had faith in his abilities, or even hope that he'd get better over time? Well, whatever she'd thought, it was more than anyone else had of him.

Letting out a sigh, an unfamiliar scent suddenly hit him like a smack to the face, and snapping his head up from looking at his paws, the crooked jawed tom stared in disbelief at the sight before him, the Twolegplace. Just a few foxlengths in front of him stood the towering fence wall, which went on for as far as the eye could see, and the strange, potent smells of Twolegs sent a shiver up his spine. How in StarClan's name had he gotten here? Had he really wandered that far? He really must've not been paying any attention for the past while...

Shocked by disbelief and fear, the warrior began to slowly hobble backwards into the tall grass, when the sound of a twig snapping made him jump in his pelt. Crouching down to the ground with his ears flat and tail curled around his body, Ryecloud's eyes scanned the area in front of him, fearful that rouges or a grumpy loner had found him, but what he saw scared him even more.

Standing next to an opened part of the fence wall was a Twoleg, who carried an oddly familiar scent and stood staring right back at him. 'Dont. Move.' he reminded himself, pressing himself as far against the ground as he could. If he needed to run, he was ready, though he knew it'd be a struggle with his leg. While part of him wondered if the Twoleg had even caught sight of him, deep down, he knew perfectly well that she was deliberately looking directly at him. 'StarClan, please make it go away,' he prayed silently, but to his dismay, the Twoleg crouched down and held out her had. Watching as the human made clicking type noises while holding out one of its fur-less paws, Ryecloud continued to stare in disbelief. Was this Twoleg summoning him?

Confused and still scared for his life, he began to back up once more, but something stopped him. Her voice, though not understandable, was calm and somewhat... soothing? As she sat in front of him, her hand out in a welcoming gesture, her cooing seemed to be calling out to him like a Queen's soft voice, but he shook his head, ridding himself of the odd feelings he just witnessed. No, he couldn't become hypnotized by this human and had to get out of her presence before she reeled him in any more.

Shuffling backwards, the grey and white tom awkwardly twisted his body around and ran as fast as he could, leaving the Twoleg behind him. For some unknown reason, something wanted to pull him back to her, but he knew that he had to return to camp, seeing as though he'd been gone for who knows how long now.

Continuing to hobble back towards camp, his limp leg trailing behind, he swore to himself not to tell anyone of the being that he'd just encountered. She was just a Twoleg, but even so, her pacifying voice, whatever she had said to him, allayed his anxiety and kept replaying in his head. No, no, no. He couldn't fall into her trap, he just couldn't.

{to be continued...}

{several sunrises later…}

Oh, but he did.

For the past few days, Ryecloud, on his usual lonesome patrols, would make time to visit the Twoleg, usually near the end of the day before he returned back to camp.

Of course, at first, he had been cautious, not letting her get too close and keeping a comfortable distance, but when she brought the magical can of pre-caught food, he’d been won over. In the beginning, he’d been somewhat ashamed for taking food from a Twoleg, but it didn’t take long for him to push aside any regret. Eating delicious food without having to work for it, it was a dream come true for the disabled tom.

Tonight, as he sat a rabbit length away from the twoleg, licking up the delectable dinner, he let the girl touch him for the very first time. At first, he couldn’t help but flinch under her cold, hairless, paws, but after a few strokes, his body stayed still as he focused on the food. Everything the clans had said about Twolegs… it couldn’t possibly have been true, could it? This one was so kind and he couldn’t even imagine what an evil Twoleg was like.

On top of her feeding him, she held a strangely familiar scent, one of which he couldn’t quite pinpoint, but he was positive that he recognized it from somewhere… but wherever he knew it from, it was oddly calming, which drew him towards her even further.

Licking his chops as he finished the can, Ryecloud looked up to the Twoleg, purring as she continued to gently pet him, the crippled tom stood up. Taking a few steps towards her, he rubbed his back along her crouched leg, which made her chuckle some sort of gibberish, of which he had no idea what she was saying. Watching as she reached forward with her weird shaped paws, he couldn’t help but take a step back as she placed them under his belly. Upon her grabbing him, there was something deep down inside him that told him to run and get away, but he pushed the thought away. This was fine, he was fine, so why fight it? Besides, all she’d shown him was kindness, so it would’ve been wrong for him to claw her, right?

Being pressed against her side, his muscles relaxed as she placed a paw under his rump to give him support. Her warm embrace and soft words… it was truly a mystical spell that he’d been put under and couldn’t escape. If Smokepelt could see him now… he’d be so disappointed. His last living son, captivated by a Twoleg. Which was exactly why he hadn’t told anyone, for he’d probably just be exiled anyway.

Continuing to speak softly to him, the Twoleg slowly stood up. Gently brushing the fur along his back, she began walking away from their little meeting spot, with him in tow. She was most likely taking him back to her Twoleg nest and while most cats would’ve had second thoughts by now, he had none. Of course Ryecloud felt bad for suddenly leaving his clan… but he couldn’t help but feel like this was the right thing to do. He was a cripple after all, so they would be better off without him slowing them down anyway. Once less mouth to feed, one less cat to look after… would they even miss him? Well, maybe some of his so called friends, but even so, they were all strong warriors and he knew they’d keep moving forward, even without his silent presence there.

Looking over the girl’s shoulder as he left the moorlands that he once called his home behind him, the grey and white tom let out a deep breath and closed his eyes. Tonight and for sunrises after, he would have a new home, a new life. There would be challenges in getting adjusted to such a type of life, but he was ready.

'May StarClan light your path,' he prayed silently, wishing his clanmates the best of luck one last time.
