Old Rivalries Never Die (CLOSED)

The sun was back and that meant the Sunningrocks were once again the best place to hunt and relax at the same time. Even though this was the place where he and Firepaw played and trained together, the young apprentice couldn't resist to come back, even if his best friend was gone. He stepped in and went straight to a rock next to a puddle of water. He laid down there and looked at his reflection, a sad expression was clear on the surface of the water. Berrypaw missed him a lot... He wanted to see him one more time but he couldn't even be sure if he was going to Starclan with him when he died since he wasn't a clan born.

"You're a little close to the border, don't you think?" Bushpaw commented. The brown tabby was in the branches of a tree a small distance away from Sunniningrocks, and jumped down gracefully as she spoke. After her first time training with Scarletsong, she had decided to surpass her mentor in all of the skills she learned. That would be impressive, and hopefully make her seem more successful. A successful apprentice was far more likely to become a honored warrior than an apprentice who failed at everything. Padding up to the border, she knew that the RiverClan apprentice was in no way too close. But winning a fight would definitely gain her a bit of respect from her clanmates. It would make her seem stronger, which she needed. She needed to be strong and a skilled fight, but not overly aggressive and impulsive. Attacking this tome out of nowhere could lead to her being branded as violent, which she couldn't have happening. Yet, at least. It was likely she would not win this battle. After all, she had hardly been battle trained yet, and didn't have too much experience. This would be her trial run. To see how border fights worked, so at the next one she could win with perfect form. "Are you going to move further away or just stay there? I will not hesitate to attack invaders."

The tom lifted his head just to see a Thunderclan apprentice. He tilted his head to one side and then jumped off the rock to see the apprentice, a frown in his face. Close to the border? Did this she-cat not know that the whole land of the Sunningrocks belonged to Riverclan? The larger apprentice stepped closer, his tail flicking eager for some action. "You must be pretty dumb or ignorant to truly believe I'm close to your border. My mentor told me all the Sunningrocks belong to us so technically, you're the one that's stepping too close." He mewed as he approached the ThunderClanner with a cocky smile and defiant eyes. "But honestly, it doesn't matter too much... I was looking something to distract me and you are going to be perfect for my training." Without any other warning, the large tom jumped over the she-cat and rolled with her until he could pin her down with his weight.

He remembered when he played fight with Firepaw and used his front paws to immobilize her shoulders and the rest of her body. He chuckled but with the intentions to mock of her. It was more in a playful way. "So, what do you say, squirrel-muncher? Wanna prove what a Thunderclan's apprentice is made of?"

"Squirrel-muncher? How creative," Bushpaw said dryly, looking up at the RiverClanner's face with a smirk. He talked too much in her opinion, and she thought it was quite foolish to think logic would change the mind of any normal apprentice in the clans. Even her mind technically wasn't changed, because she had believed that in the first place. But now she had to act angry, but not too angry. Like a kit who had their favorite mossball taken away from them. "Sunningrocks may belong to RiverClan, but you got it unfairly! And ThunderClanner's are made of strength and honor, unlike your clan, which is made out of fish!" Deciding that she sounded convincing enough, she stopped acting like a stupid kit. The one thing that hadn't changed the whole time was her expression, which stayed as an arrogant smirk. Trying to kick him off of her, she hit her feet into his legs, but didn't have a good enough angle to knock him off.

The tom couldn't but laugh at the also lame insult of the she-cat. They both truly had to make up with better ways to humiliate their rivals. "Made of fish? Seriously? It seems we both suck with using our words, sweetheart." The larger tom stepped off since he couldn't keep her still for too long but as he was backing away, he saw a soft spot and without a doubt, he attacked her belly with his right paw, dealing her a barely visible wound. It wasn't his intention to kill her. They were just apprentices after all and this was just a mere skirmish.

Berrypaw leapt away, feeling how happiness and excitement started to fill his chest. He loved fights since he was a kit and he didn't mind if his rival was a Riverclan or Thunderclan cat. It was still an enjoyable thing for him. " Also, I'm pretty sure my clan kicked up your warriors' butt fairly enough with nothing but their claws, strength and the courage of a lion. It's not our fault that your clan couldn't win a simple battle." He mewed with an arrogant smirk too.

"Yeah, and I'm pretty sure the fact that you were well-fed while we were starving might have had something to do with it," Bushpaw retorted, her smirk growing into a grin. Even though she knew she was supposed to be acting whiny and mouse-brained, she couldn't help but through some sarcasm into her fake arguments. "And I'm pretty sure you trespassed onto ThunderClan territory to attack me." While talking, she had figured out two things. First off, in her next battle, she had to strike first. Waiting around for him to initiate fighting had been wasteful. She also noticed how the move he had first used made it hard to fight back, allowing him to be able to attack her for longer before she could hurt him. That would be useful in catching up with him. Leaping for the apprentice, she hit her outstretched claws into his shoulder blades, burying his face into the dirt. Keeping him pinned, she dug her claws deeper into his skin, feeling blood pooling near her claws. "How do you like it now?"

He lifted his head at her first words and just kept having the same defiant, cocky look in his face. "Well then. Your clan didn't lose because your warriors fight but because of your leader's foolishness to try to steal the land of a clan when their clan couldn't even feed their bellies. That's even better, don't you think?"He mewed before the she-cat could jump over him.

Even if dirt covered his face, the tom couldn't help to smile. This had been the perfect distraction for him to stop thinking about Firepaw and his sorrow. He mourned his death but he knew that his friend would have never wanted to be sad all the time. The pain on his shoulder just made him feel alive and as he shook his body to attempt to throw the she-cat away, he managed to look her from the corner of his eyes. "Not bad for a Thunderclan apprentice at all." He complimented her, with honesty. He was not the type of cat that went all mad over a fight but instead admired his rivals when they had proven to be great fighters.

Berrypaw is stunned for one turn more.

"Not bad? Maybe by a RiverClanner's standards. But trust me, if you met any older ThunderClan apprentice here, then you wouldn't stand a chance," Bushpaw mocked, her face no longer showing any emotion. It didn't matter if he couldn't see her. If anyone had been watching, it would have been rather creepy, watching her speak with such feeling while her face stayed neutral and emotionless. After his words, she was completely sure it was the right call to have her insults not make any sense. After all, niether did his. Continuing to slowly and steadily sink her claws deeper into the tom's shoulders, she made sure to get some of the blood on her pads. Just in case he ran home saying she provoked him into battle, she could spread his scent further into the territory and say he was too blame. It most likely wouldn't be necessary, but extra precautions would be fine. Her muscles began to feel sore from using all her strength to hold the tom down, but she ignored it. Now there was a third technique she had learned from this battle. Push past the pain.

The tom just laughed and moved even harder so she would fell. It seemed her claws were started to pull off his flesh so it was just a matter of time before he could attack once more. "To be honest, I doubt that. Your clan only spends time hunting and battling while we do both things AND we train our muscles to swim, which is way harder than just running around after some squirrels. Most of Riverclan's apprentices are stronger than the ones that belong to your clan, sweetie." He mewed with a flirty, confident smile as he unsheathed his claws for his next counter-attack.

"Wow, you can swim. That must make you waaaay stronger. I'd like to see you try tree-climbing and still say that," Bushpaw laughed, actually beginning to not hate this. While she didn't enjoy having to pretend as mouse-brained as he was, succeeding at something always was a plus. The feeling of blood in her claws was natural to her, and feeling dominant was a feeling she cherished. However, she could feel her strength subsiding. One carefully aimed strike from the RiverClan tom could take her out, she could tell. Legs growing sore and resistance becoming stronger, her paws slipped from his shoulders. Before he could get up, she readied for another attack. Remembering something her opponent had done earlier, she added a fourth note on to what she needed to do in battle. Aim for the weak spots. The stomach was the perfect option for that. Lunging at the tom's belly, she quickly swiped with her paws. She was careful to draw just enough blood to get her paws bloody, but not enough to open a large wound. Causing major blood loss, maiming, or infection would just lead to her getting in trouble.

The tom chuckled happily when he finally got to hear the she-cat's laugh. Finally, she was getting some fun from this! But the tom could not just stay playing around. He knew he was getting weaker as well as the other apprentice was. If he wanted to win his first border battle, he had to be fast, just like Aspenstrike taught him. When she got his belly, the tom didn't let her a chance to move away before he himself attacked back, reaching her own exposed belly with his claws.

He stood up as quickly as he could after that, his breathing heavy but a permanent smirk on his face. The adrenaline felt great and he had to admit he was rather close to being defeated. "Well, maybe I can try one day and see what you mean, ThunderClanner. After all, it's not like we don't have trees in our land." He mewed taking a glimpse to a Beech tree that was a few minutes away of walking. Berrypaw soon returned his sight to the Thunderclan she-cat and smiled. "That was a nice battle. You're almost as good as Firepaw was... But it seems fun has to come to end and you should be returning to your clan, sweetheart. If you ever get bored again, we can fight again. The name is Berrypaw. It was good to meet you." Despite the sad memory of his lost friend, the golden-furred tom just smiled at the brown tabby. He knew their clans hated each other and he had to admit that he disliked Thunderclan a bit. However, that didn't mean he couldn't have a good time with a cat from another clan.
