For once, the Abandoned Barn was no longer a hive of frenzied activity.

Hardly the hub of vivacious activity that it formerly was just a few hours prior, only the faint remnants of snores drifted through the shadowy evening air. Rare was the day that these unfortunate creatures encountered such luck that they could truly sleep through the night with minimal disruption. Perhaps the severity of the lingering situation hung much too heavily on the inhabitants that currently resided within the alien structure, perhaps it was the realization of the potential fate that awaited them with the dawning of the next morning- irregardless, whatever weights that his followers appeared to be laden with, for once they seemed truly able to fall into the clutches of the unconsciousness that they desired so dearly. With what came with the dawn, they needed every last minuscule second. Slender forepaw reaching out, Lichenmask gently prodded the plump little bodies that sprawled alongside the lightly swelling and deflating curve of Brushgaze's belly. Apathetic gaze hardly registering the slow stirring of the drowsy kits, the young tom beckoned them forth from the makeshift nest that their mother had pulled together, "Wake up."

Tried as he might, Lichenmask was unable to properly garner a single fiber of emotion in regards to the kits he had fathered. Even from the moment they had first emerged into this terrible world, he had simply felt... nothing. No love, no affection, nor pride. Whereas others saw them as a symbol of hope, a glean of chance upon the dismal horizon, he saw only darkness and grief. It had been cruel to bring them into such an existence, and even crueler still to bestow such a fate upon those who couldn't even comprehend the weight that they carried. Perhaps it was the legacy of their blood, to walk along an absolute fate with no choice to alleviate them of a purpose with no choice. Lichenmask had condemned them, something which he held not a singular thread of doubt in regards to. Yet, he could not bring himself to take action- to give them back to the earth that they had came from, to ensure that no more suffering would be ushered back into existence. He was no fool, he could see how they gazed after him, yet he had failed them all the same.

"Come here." Lichenmask's soft voice rang out amongst the dreary noises of slumber, void of emotion as he watched the young kits tumble after him.

Lids sticky with sleep at the sudden interruption, Duskkit was hardly able to register what was transpiring as he was nudged awake by his father. Drowsily shaking away the foggy tendrils of unconsciousness that stubbornly clung to his fur like a cobweb, the young tom's heavy limbs trembled under his initial movements as he scrambled after Lichenmask. They had never been up so late before! Why was he waking them up at such a time? Was it a secret adventure?! Thick fur prickling slightly as consciousness gradually returned to his mind, the pale tabby was quick to scamper the rest of the remaining distance.

Redkits scruffy head lifted as she looked blearily up at her father, a cat despite not showing any sort of emotion towards them she held so strongly towards and highly regarded. Redkit's mouth opened up into a yawn, reveal a tiny pink mouth and pearly white teeth, a small little noise escaping as her mouth clamped shut. Getting to her paws she yawned once more before following after Lichenmask and her brother, unknowing of what was to transpire soon.

Dawnkit trailed slightly behind Redkit and Duskkit, her fluffy tail dragging on the ground as she trotted towards her father. Her fur was messy and stuck up in places from rolling in her sleep just moments before. She really wanted to stay tucked into Brushgaze's pelt, but this was more important. Lichenmask hadn't ever smiled at them, but the young she-kit was determined to get his attention and his approval. She bumped against Redkit by accident when she picked up her pace to race after Duskkit, stumbling a bit but hurrying up all the same.

The young tom was not one who enjoyed sleep. If it were up to Burntkit, he would be awake throughout all hours. A lot more could happen when one was not ensnared within the confines of their own mind. However, Brushgaze coaxed them all into the nest at night and had reassured him that sleep was necessary. Despite giving into her words, the calico tom had still struggled against the heavy fall of his eyelids until it was nearly impossible to hold them open for any longer. He simply relied on the fact that most of the barn would likely be deep within their own dreams for the night as well.

Not long after a much larger paw prodded his side and Burntkit's eyes snapped open almost instantaneously. Once he registered the frame of his father, the kit was up on his increasingly steadier paws and following after. If Lichenmask had something to say, apparently for their ears only, he would be ready. Abandoning the warmth of their nest and the soft, plumpness of his mother's stomach was not difficult when he was spurred on by the thought that the great leader of the exiles wanted to speak to him personally. As he woke further, Burntkit's chin raised higher and his still fluffy tail flickered behind him.

Prying open his eyes, Slatekit let out a yawn. What could his father possibly want at this hour and what could possibly be the rush? Standing up, the hefty kit gave his claws and stretch and trotted after his siblings, his tail high as if he wasn't a bit tired. No matter what, he wasn't going to let any possible weakness show through his fluffy pelt. Not now, not ever.

The terse night air was wrought with the scuffing of sleep-clumsy paws, which weighed heavily upon the crumbling wood of the Abandoned Barn. It took a fixated amount of patience, patience that Lichenmask rarely ever exuded, to shepherd the slow-going party away from the confines of their nest. A happening which took extraordinarily long, considering how many steps the young kits had to take in place of his own singular movements. Only occasionally peering out at the train that scuttled after him as he herded them towards the sagging entrance of the Abandoned Barn, his mind couldn't but drift ever so slight. They seemed quite eager at the prospect to come along, tail flicking slightly as he halted in a shadowy expanse of red light that bled profusely from the gaping entrance in the wood, but then again they didn't even know what was happening. Brushgaze and the others were too tight-lipped, favoring ignorance over merely telling the truth. Settling himself down into a seated position with a flourish of his feathered tail, the dark-furred tom watched as the kits scampered up after him. Gazing down at the wide eyes that peered up at him unabashedly, Lichenmask's next inquiry was void of any deferring emotions, "Tell me, do you know what comes in the morning?"

Duskkit merely shook his head in response to his father's questioning, ears tipping and swaying harshly under his frenzied movements. For all the attention they often received from the many strange inhabitants of their home, they were often never informed of the more interesting events that lurked just beyond their reach. They may be kits, but they outta be told things! "Nope!" Lips curling back to reveal a mouthful of kitten-sharp teeth, the light-furred tabby's interest could not erase the tendrils of exhaustion that still weighed upon his fur. Duskkit wasn't a fan of guessing-games anyways- his littermates could handle that kind of stuff!

His paws just barely kept from scuffling the worn floor of the barn. As awake as he was, the tendrils of sleep still attempted to clutch the young kit as he trotted after his father. Although his sheer will won out, Burntkit still hung closer to the middle of the group for a moment before galloping swiftly to the head of his litter. Once Lichenmask stopped his haunches quickly met the ground and his ears perked eagerly. Each word spoken was something he clung to. Not only was this his father and the inherent kit-like desire to please was overwhelming but in his short life the calico kit had been raised to see this tom as one of the greatest to ever walk the barn. Underneath the crimson light, the emanated through a break in the wood, any white of his coat was rendered a faint scarlet.

"No." Burntkit meowed simply, shaking his head slightly as if to emphasize his words. A soft frown curved down the edges of his maw. Being the kit of the leader, he hoped to know of the happening of this place. It displeased him to know there was something coming that he was not yet made aware of. However, the unhappiness flickered into satisfaction that Lichenmask was telling them something. Given his youth and inexperience, Burntkit was unable to pick out any in-depth emotion, or lack thereof, within his father's words. Instead, he simply heard the serious nature of the words and took solace in the fact that they were to be delivered some important news.

"Shade told me that there was gonna be a biiiiig battle!" Redkit chirped, puffing out her chest as she displayed her infinite fountain of knowledge compared to her siblings. Bouncing onto her back paws she slapped her fat front paws on her father's leg as she looked up excitedly at him, her tail lashing wildly with her excitement. "And we're goin ta win I bet! We got the real blood of clan cats in us! Not them!" Redkit directed her attention to her litter-mates, bowling into Slatekit and wrestling him into the dirt.

Dawnkit's face scrunched up in concentration, wondering what her father had in store. Something big and important for sure, or he wouldn't have said anything. Her ears perked at Redkit's announcement, at first angry that she got to know but Dawnkit didn't. "What? Lichenmask, do we get to fight the forest cats? Are we gonna be in charge?" She mewed with her eyes shining at the prospect of the violent encounter, her indignant attitude forgotten. She'd heard the whispers of the other exiles about the dread clans and all their evil ways, and she was enthralled by the zeal of stories of Lichenmask's control over the skies. Dawnkit hopped out of the way of Slatekit and Redkit and mewled at her father with a newfound energy despite her lack of sleep. "Why are we waiting so long?"

Gathering with his littermates, Slatekit looked up at his father, eyes wide and ears perked. Thinking about Lichenmask's question, he suddenly remembered the answer. "Th-" he opened the jaws to speak, but before he was able to get a single word out, Redkit tackled him. Lichenmask was just about to tell them something important and she wanted to play? Letting out a low growl, Slatekit quickly regained his bearings, an odd aurora of elation pumping through his veins. Having stood up, llunged forward, his jaws open and showing a set of sharp, pearly white teeth. Clasping his jaws around his littermate's soft neck, the hefty kit kept a firm grip as he held her head pressed against ground. His sharp teeth just about to pierce through skin, something inside of him drove him to keep going, but he was somehow able to bring himself to loosen his grip ever so slightly.

After a moment of continuing to hold her down in a threatening way, Slatekit let go and licked his chops, looking down to Redkit with a scowl on his face. What a mousebrain, wanting to play at a time like this. Giving his ruffled pelt a shake and flexing his claws, his stern yet now calm gaze turned back to his father. "The sun, duh," the fluffy grey kit mewled with a roll of his eyes. While he didn't actually know what this 'sun' looked like or did, he'd heard rumors from the older cats of a time before the 'days of darkness' in which a bright light engulfed the sky each day. Whatever the sun was, it was surely a weak being, seeing as though it was currently hiding, well, as far as the exiles has said.

Before Slatekit had a proper chance to react, the young kit was sent staggering from the sheer force of a merciless clout. Leering down at the dark-furred tom, there was nothing but disgust and faint hatred gleaming within the disconcerting amber depths of a gaze void of affection. "If you are more content to behave like the little rat you apparently are," There was a sharp snarl bubbling up from behind Lichenmask's curled lips, "Then go play with them, for I have no use for you." He held no love in his heart for the unfortunate brood he had sired, but a clear distinction was becoming apparent- Slatekit would forever be held in the absolute lowest regard within his gaze if the tom was more enthralled with behaving like a mindless, detestably brutish newer version of Shade. One would think that they would be fortunate enough to act as their blood demanded, but apparently they either lacked the wit or the luck for such a feat. Promptly turning upon the squabbling pair with an exasperated sigh, he was tempted to merely just send them back to their mother's belly for a terribly long moment. Pressure throbbing sharply within the limited confines of his temple, the dark tabby's gaze remained tightly shut for an agonizingly long period of time, chest heaving and nostrils flaring.

Why must you be so hard on them? They're only kits.

Whether it was actually Sparrowleaf whispering within his ear, or merely the faintest glimmer of a consciousness he was unfamiliar with, Lichenmask did not know.

Kits I do not want, nor need.

Yet, here they are all the same. If they were not to have purpose, they would've not been given onto you.

"Not just a battle." He finally rebuked Redkit's claim with an unreadable tone, gazing out upon the dismal shadows that crawled across the still night, "The ending and the beginning, the first morning and the last evening. The death of the moon, the birth of the stars. It's not just a battle, it's the birth of a new life, the coming of a new age." Tail flicking lightly, his gaze remained fixated upon the dreary red smear that laid heavily within the colorless night sky. Although the outcome of what would come on the morrow was unknown, it did not matter very much to his weary heart in such a trying moment. If there was one thing that he had learned throughout his existence, it was that there was no escaping what had been written by the strings of fate. "With this dawn, you will be faced with a choice. Your blood demands something of you, something that far beyond the comprehension of normal cats. The legacy you hold is a heavy one, heavier than most could bear to burden themselves to carry. In time, you will come to understand just what it means to be who you are. But you must come to a decision, first- will you look to the past, or to the future?" Tilting his head slightly to peer down at the kits who scampered about, unknowing of the severity of the situation that hung precariously above their heads.

Heavily weighted with both sleep and curiosity at Lichenmask's words, Duskkit paid no mind to the particularly stern reprimanding of Redkit and Slatekit. In time, you will come to understand just what it means to be who you are? The light tabby's features pinched slightly at his father's words, unable to comprehend the meaning of the odd statement. What it meant to be who they were? Was there a reason they were supposed to figure such a thing out? Peering over at Burntkit and Dawnkit in hopes of being greeted with similar confusion, the young tom remained silent as he mulled over the words.

As his littermates tossed out half-answers into the air, Burntkit's ear flicked. They knew little more than he did, so there was no point in the wasted time. He simply waited for their father to speak once again. But the moment was interrupted by Redkit's overly kit-like mannerisms. He wanted to box her over the ears in an unplayful manner. But the kit exercised a born self-control that even he did not understand yet. Unfortunately, Slatekit chose to respond to the mock attack, displaying his reckless mannerisms in turn. The desire to howl at them for their irritating behavior was overwhelming. Dawnkit and Duskkit were fairly tolerable in showing their own measures of restraint, or at least no uncharacteristically annoying behaviors.

Admittedly, Burntkit did flinch ever so slightly at his father's rebuke of his brother's actions. It was unexpected but quickly caused a soft smirk to flash across his feature. Perhaps Lichenmask would be able to make them less of a daily annoyance and teach them their place. Teach them to be respectable. Not that he thought of such matters of respect but rather he considered them within his own kit-like terms. For a moment the idea crossed his mind that perhaps it was a lack of their father's involvement that created such unfavorable actions in his kin. Within the short time of their lives, Burntkit had finally begun to notice how much less he was around compared to Brushgaze. It had built up a growing frustration in his chest that was only soothed by the understanding that Lichenmask had a task as the leader.

He still looked up to his father at this stage in life, as any kit would, sitting in the desire to ultimately please the cat who had sired them. And it was for this reason that he instantly forgot the worries of his siblings as soon as their father pressed on. Burntkit's eyes were focused and his ears pricked as he sought to cling onto every word. While he struggled to fully understand the meaning of everything that had just been presented to them, there was something stirring about the words. Every ounce of his being wanted to cling onto the few things that his father had just spoken to him. Without meaning to, the long-furred calico found himself on four paws with a determination in his eyes. Where it had come from or what it meant was lost on him.

"The future, of course." He meowed decisively with as much confidence could be mustered up in his state of semi-ignorance.

Redkit squealed and yelped in terror as her litter-mate snapped his jaws around her neck, a paw pressing threateningly against her head. The moment Slatekit relaxed she shot off, stumbling behind Duskkit, her eyes wide and filled with moisture, barely even able to process her fathers scolding him. Redkit rubbed at her neck and sat just behind her brother, peering anxiously around him at Slatekit as if he was about to launch himself at her again. Redkit kept an ear towards her father's words, drinking in his words as if she had not had a drop of moisture on her tongue for moons. They were the start of a new dawn.

Hissing at his father's scornful words, Slatekit didn't feel bad at all for his actions. If he was a rat, so be it. He would be the strongest rat any of these weakling cats had ever seen, including his disdainful father. Giving his fluffy fur a shake, he turned his gaze to the distance as his father spoke. Faced with a decision... what decision could they possibly be faced with? "The future, obviously," he huffed and looked down to his paws as his tail lashed back and forth. The past got you no where and who ever dwelt in the past was a mouse-brain.

Dawnkit's expression soured when Lichenmask reacted to Slatekit with a blow. She was more conflicted than Burntkit, both disliking the method of punishment but being relieved that the two would stop screwing around. She shoved her doubts out of her mind, thinking, 'Slatekit's dumb anyway. I better not act like him or I'll get hit next. Dawnkit gulped at the thought, but her ears perked when Lichenmask addressed them all again. Her little claws clicked against the ground in frustration. Sometimes, all her father did was look at them in disgust and speak in riddles like a loon! She exhaled slightly through her nose in exasperation. He was powerful and wise, but why couldn't he just say it straight? Who else was she, except Dawnkit?

The tortoiseshell kit traded glances with Duskkit. She liked him the most; he was least prone to saying stupid things. Still, she didn't know what to say in response. Dawnkit couldn't tell what Lichenmask wanted to hear from them. Slatekit and Burntkit both seemed convinced by their answers, but she wasn't so sure. Something vague about destinies flitted through her mind. Something about their blood and a heavy burden. It was all too complex for her young mind, and it was upsetting and humbling at the same time. A question formed in her thoughts but she was hesitant to ask. Finally, she meowed quietly, "What's wrong with our blood?"
