Hunting Hearts (Closed)

Hillpaw had no idea how he would have ever lived if he had been born into a different clan. Raised away from strength and honor would have been absolutely horrible. How did the other clans stand it? In addition to good morals, RiverClan had fish. Fish were the best food ever, and he doubted he could ever survive without them, let alone on a diet of rabbits. So while hunting was a tedious chore, it improved his strength and gave him fish. Plus, it helped the clan to survive. Lose win win, was how he thought of it. That was why he wasn’t to upset that he was on a hunting patrol. Flurrypaw was ridiculously gorgeous and very loyal, and Tawnyfang was tough and loyal as well. Both she-cats were clanmates he respected.
“Let’s get to hunting already!” Hillpaw insisted, shooting towards the river the moment their patrol was out of camp. The cold water on his paws was refreshing from the sun’s heat, and he could already see fish swimming about.

Dewshine’s training was really starting to pay off. Flurrypaw found she was no longer nearly as scared of water as she used to be when she first started her training, and she knew it wouldn’t be long before she began behaving like a proper RiverClan cat. She was thrilled to be testing out her tolerance for water with a fishing patrol, but more importantly she was excited to spend time with the incredibly handsome tom Hillpaw. It wasn’t that she was too shy to approach him, she just wanted to focus on overcoming her fear of water first and foremost, but now that she could fish with ease she could focus on the more important aspects in life: finding the perfect mate and having lots and lots of kits so that RiverClan can thrive.

She purred rather dreamily as she followed Hillpaw into the shallow water, not even flinching this time at the initial coolness or wetness swirling around her beautifully groomed paws. She looked over at him and shot him a flirtatious wink. ”Let’s you and I catch twice as much fish as Tawnyfang, then we can share our catch later on.”

"That should be easy if you have half as much skill as personality. I can't wait to feat on our victory together," Hillpaw replied, expression knowing smirk. He could easily tell that Flurrypaw was trying to flirt with him, and he loved it. While he never even think far enough into the future to imagine settling down and having kits, being hit on by a beautiful she-cat wasn't something he would complain about. Only really half listening to Tawnyfang's directions, he was already searching the river for fish, pleased that the warrior saw it as a challenge. Losing was not his forte. Blue eyes scanning the river, he saw a carp coming his way. Remembering what he had been taught, he ignored his instinct to pounce on it right where it was. Estimating its path, he slashed his unsheathed claws right where he expected the fish to go. It basically swam right into his claws, getting itself hooked and quickly killed. Stupid fish. It was no match for the intelligence of even the youngest RiverClan apprentice. To be fair, he was very talented for his age. Looking to the other apprentice, he smiled. "I already have more than anyone else here."

Flurrypaw smiled and settled down next to Hillpaw, so close that her fluffy white pelt gently brushed his. She looked down at the water, feeling much more serene looking into her own reflection and through the beautifully clean and clear surface at the hundreds of tiny pebbles resting on the bottom. While she could still see her reflection, she couldn't see her own shadow, so the fish wouldn't notice her until it was too late. She lifted up a paw, unsheathing her claws, and once she saw the silver body of a large fish she swiped down, breaking through the surface and hooking the fish up in her claws. She tossed it to shore, pounced on it with graceful agility, and sharply nipped the back of its neck to kill it. It was a quick, clean catch. "And now we are tied!"

Tawnyfang glanced at the apprentice's for a moment and noticed that they were flirting. Blinking a few times, she decided a settle a bit  more upstream, wanting to give them space. Mostly for her sake, anyway; watching two apprentices share affection for each other  made her nervous, as pathetic as it sounded. Sighing, she instead focused on hunting; it was a good distraction and would ensure the prey pile remained full. Tail tip twitching, she waited until a silver body swam into view. Without wasting any time, her paw struck out with excellent speed and batted the fish out of the water. With a quick bite from her fang, she ended its life.

“We’ll probably have three hours times as many fish as Tawnyfang at this rate!” Hillpaw laughed, then noticed that Tawnyfang had made a catch. Well, now he would have to catch more for his words to be true. Both his pride and a stange need to impress Flurrypaw motivated him as he searched the river for fish. Before long, his blue eyes caught the sight of the quickly moving body of a perch. The small fish was certainly very fast, but it was no match for a mighty RiverClan warrior! Sending his claws flying at it from upstream, he flung the striped fish onto the bank of the river. After watching it flop about pathetically for a few moments, he lunged for it and broke its spine with his jaws, killing it. That was my oddly satisfying.

Flurrypaw watched as Hillpaw caught his second fish, and she purred with arched eyes. He was definitely an impressive cat, that was for certain. She imagined she and the strong and powerful apprentice would be a truly beautiful couple, maybe even closer than Snowblossom and Lakewhisper. "Wow, you're so talented, and so swift and agile," she swooned with a purr. "RiverClan really must be the greatest Clan in the forest with a cat like you."

She turned back to the river, waiting for the next chance for her to scoop out her second fish. She spotted one darting towards the surface to feast on the little bugs buzzing too close to the water, and she lashed out a paw as quickly as she could. Once again, she managed to scoop out a rather sizable fish, and she pounced on it before finishing it off with a bite to the neck.

Starclan, would they ever stop flirting. Tawnyfang's tail twitched uncomfortably as she once again glanced over at the two apprentices, heat rising to her pelt when she noticed Flurrypaw swooning over Hillpaw. Shouldn't they be focusing more on serving their clan instead of dabbling with love? That's what Torrentstorm and her did, put their clan first until they were loyal warriors of Riverclan. She choked softly to herself, immediately taking that back; no, no, that was incorrect. Since they were kits, her brother had something for Hailsong. He could see it in the way he spoke, the way he looked at her...she didn't understand it, really. How could cats find love like that, in the blink of an eye? She hadn't a clue.

Clearing her throat, she diverted her attention back to the water and desperately tried to ignore the courting apprentices nearby. Watching intently, the slim body of a fish soon came into view. Just as quickly as she had done before, her paw cut through the water and soon, a fish was flailing helplesdly on land. With a quick bite to the neck, another catch was added to her slowly growing pile.
