Children of Night, Bringers of Light [CLOSED] Empty
PostSubject: Children of Night, Bringers of Light [CLOSED]   Children of Night, Bringers of Light [CLOSED] EmptyWed Jun 06, 2018 5:11 am

It was the thick of night. Heathers and grasses dyed gray with starlight rippled in the ever slight nighttime breeze. Mice and rabbits scurried silently in the shrub and through their tunnels. Cold starlight gleamed downwards in a moonless sky. The moors were silent as to be. Deep in these highlands, there was a sandy shallow, surrounded by a scraggly ring of gorse. Inside countless cats were sprawled out. Some of them curled around tiny kits with delicate care. Some laid with blood-stained paws and pelts beriddled with small scars. All of them were fast asleep.

Twistedtail was one of these cats. She was sleeping near the gorse wall in full view of the stars. The older warrior was curled up into a slumbering ball, her crooked tail resting over her forelimbs. At one moment she was as deep in sleep as her clanmates, the next her green eyes were wide open. She swore she heard something far off in the distance. What it was, she couldn’t remember. She stood up and did a little stretch. When she was done she did a quick look around to see if anyone else was awake. No one else was, strangely. Where could the noise have come from if there were no cat around to make it? She quietly padded out of the shallow she called home and paused on the ridge. She could hear it again. It was most certainly the faint mews of a kitten, though far off. She immediately started off in that direction at a run. What cat would leave kits out in the open like this?

”T-Twistedtail!” Twistedtail’s leaf green eyes widened she almost crashed into another cat. Upon further inspection she found it was Pigeonstorm. The dark gray tom was almost invisible against the night sky and moonwashed plains. ”O-oh thunk Starclan!” the tom stuttered with his broken jaw. ”T-there is sum k-k-kits and... and... on t-the moor-“ Twistedtail stopped him with a wave of her crooked black tail. ”Wait, what? The grey warrior in front of her sighed with frustration. “J-just fullow me, and you will see.” With that the scarred grey tom turned and sprinted back to where he came from without waiting for the Siamese she-cat behind him.

Twistedtail ran after Pigeonstorm. After some time, she could smell the scent of death in the air. ‘This can’t be good,’ she thought. As they continued and as the mewing got louder she saw the Lone Stump, sitting on the crest of a hill. She always avoided that place. It was where her mother died and where she gave birth to her forbidden— and now dead—kits Echopaw and Heathershade. But it wasn’t just the Lone Stump. There was something lying over it and around it, and...

“Oh no.”

The she-cats black paws skidded to a halt. The air was thick with the stench of death. A gray tabby she-cat was bad touch over the rotting stump. Her green eyes had the look of death and her mouth was stuck open in a silent scream. Her sides were stained a sickly red. But that wasn’t the end of it. Curled up by the dead queen’s feet were two kits. They were less than a moon old, probably not even into their first week of existence. Their cries and squeals as the tried to clamber on to their dead mother were too heartbreaking. “I-I said that there w-were kits,” Pigeonstorm said in a shaky voice. “I just didn’t know that... oh, Starclan.” She looked down at the two kits and their long passed mother. “Can they understand us yet? Are their eyes open? Do they know what happened to their mother?”

PostSubject: Re: Children of Night, Bringers of Light [CLOSED]   Children of Night, Bringers of Light [CLOSED] EmptyWed Jun 06, 2018 12:24 pm

The night had been a rush of events that were impossible to understand as a kit as young as him. It seemed to have been one after another, and they all happened so fast that Blackkit couldn’t keep his freshly opened eyes on what was happening. All he remembered was his mother quickly setting him and his sister down, rather roughly on that note, like she was in a rush. From then the tom curled into a ball to stay warm, his short pelt not doing him any favors with the cold night breeze drifting over the moor, and he attempted to sleep. If he slept then maybe when he awoke his mother would be there with them and she would keep them warm, but this was not the case.

He found himself unable to sleep, as screams and yowls filled his tiny black ears. Sounds he distantly recognized as his mother. Whimpering and mewing in discontent and fear, this tiny kit backed against the stump in which the kits were placed against, trying to recede away from the situation in front of them. And slowly his eyelids opened to reveal his eyes, the first time they had opened all the way. They had slightly opened a couple times, but this was new to him. His first sight though...it would’ve been a horrible sight to see if Blackkit would’ve understood what was happening. In the dark he couldn’t make out much, just the blurry form of his grey tabby mother swiping and biting at a shape that blended into the dark. He could hear the snarls and screeches of his mother, but had no comprehension of what was happening. Pushing himself closer and closer to the stump, the tom watched the scenario get closer and closer to him and his sister, though he still could not make out the creature near his mother. The sounds of this battle terrified the young kit, but after what seemed like a lifetime, it was over as fast as it had started.

Blackkit’s mewling hadn’t ceased since the fear had crept over him, but now they were in desperation for his mother’s warmth. Following her smell, though there was something stronger than her scent covering it, he was clueless to the fact that it was death, he tried to find her until he bumped into what he recognized as her shape. Trying to climb up her, trying to get to her warmth, he used thorn sharp claws to try and climb atop her but yowled loudly when he was greeted by a moist substance. And when he released her pelt from his claws and rolled back off of her to the hard ground, he was covered in it. Blood. His mother’s blood. Blackkit’s white pelt was now red with the blood covering him, and now even colder than ever as the wind hit his wet pelt.

Now he headbutted his mother, clearly upset whilst being cold and now hungry, pawing her and anything to acquire her attention. “Momma. Momma. Momma!” In between each yowl he bumped his mother’s, now cold, body, desperate for her warmth. His ears pricked as he heard sounds of other creatures, but these sounding like more cats. Whether they were cats or not, the small tom shrank into his mother’s body in an attempt to hide from the new creatures in front of him. “Momma…

ooc;; I played it as he opened his eyes that night, if you would like me to change anything let me know and I can do that! :)

"Mama?" Frostkit squeaked. She was the smallest of the litter and shivering hard. Her tail tip was turning numb and her eyes weren't open yet. She felt a sharp hunger pain and desperately kneaded her mother's cold fur. She butted her mother's stomach, but there was no milk. Frostkit wailed in hunger and cold.

"Blackkit? Are we going to die?" mewed Frostkit, shrinking closer into her mother's freezing body. She blinked and opened her blue-green eyes. She looked down to see her pale coat covered in red. Her mother was covered in it too. Frostkit began to lick her mother's fur. She shuddered as wind hit her fur. Frostkit squeaked and shivered, her whole tail numb now.

She looked at the brown shape and hid behind it, hoping to be sheltered from the wind. Frostkit curled up, shaking from hunger and cold. She couldn't see Blackkit, but thought he was okay. She sat up again and wailed. Her tail was so cold! She looked at it,and squealed in alarm that it looked a little blue.

OOC: oof this is way overdue

I just realized how hard of a challenge it’s going to be roleplaying Littlekit, Pigeonstorm, and Twistedtail at once.

littlekit’s pov

The timespan of the events that led up to this moment were short, but to the tiny grey tabby shivering at the roots of a rotten stump, each second were a hundred moons. Not too long ago she was lying piled up with her siblings, deep in slumber. Then jaws coming from a warmth that she recognized as her mother quickly picked her and her sibling up, and then there was a jostling sensation. Perhaps it has to do with the fact it was night, or possibly the fact her eyes weren’t opened yet, but she had no idea where they were going. After a sudden stop she and two other bodies she knew as her littermates were dropped roughly at the foot of a stump. The shorthair attempted to curl up around the roots for warmth, but the dead plant gave no heat. After waiting for what seemed like eternity the kit heard a noise. Her mother. Hisses and screeches. New sounds that she had no words for, noises that terrified her very being. She opened her mouth into a wail. She cried for help.

But nobody came.

She kneaded the ground below her with soft white paws in anxiety. She had never felt anxiety before, nor fear, but here it was, thrumming through her soul. The tabby mewled for warmth, for shelter. The hard-cutting gale cut to her bones and made her shiver. Once the cold seeped in she instinctively fluffed her fur out in a vain attempt to get warm. Suddenly, a large object flumped downwards, almost crushing Littlekit in the process.

And that was the moment she first opened her eyes.

Clear baby blue eyes with blooms of turquoise, large and innocent. And staring straight at her dead mother. The large queen’s tabby body lied so close she could touch it with her nose. Dulling green eyes looked at her with a dead gaze. Her sides were stained a crimson red, which started to seep into the surrounding ground. To a kit as young as her, she didn’t know that her mother was dead, or that it was blood that was pooling at her snow-white paws. She slowly crawled towards the limp body and tried to stuff herself between the dead she-cat’s forelimb and chest, where she can coo and cuddle her closely. She let out an defiant squeak as she simply tumbled away, covered in a sticky coating of red. She heard the presence of other cats but didn’t pay any attention to them. Littlekit wanted her mother to get up and play with them again.

pigeonstorm’s pov

The sight of the bloodied mother was sickening to Pigeonstorm. He had seen dead bodies too many times to count when he was under that a tyrant Bear, but it didn’t make it any less painful. He had watched as Bear died to the claws of the ton’s own brother. How he himself nearly died as Rockthorn ripped out his jaw and raked his sides, and when he foolishly launched himself at that powerful spirit The Mist, only to be torn to shreds. This was how his daughter Cherryblossom died, a bloodied mother who wandered too far from safety, from the safety of him and Annabelle’s home and into the dark wood chasing some Thunderclan tom. And he didn’t want to see anymore death, especially from a kit. The Warrior Code forbade that.

“T-Twistedtail, you g-go gut the kits out of the c-cold, and I move tuh body out of the w-way. Okay?” Without waiting for an answer he immediately set to work, scrunching up his nose as he rolled the cold body away from the kits.

twistedtail’s pov

To Twistedtail, it seemed this Stump was cursed to whoever laid down by it. Her adoptive mother had came to rest by this stump, and then she died. She had collapsed here from exhaustion one day after trying to conceal her illegal pregnancy with that Shadowclan tom Spucethorn, and then she gave birth. When she and Rippedstar were just denmates and best friends, this was where she gave up on chasing him to get him to come back after he fled the clan, where she begged and cried for him to return, and where he turned a blind eye and ran into the woods. And here it was, claiming another cat into it’s trap.

Upon hearing Pigeonstorm’s reply the she-cat nodded. She didn’t like being bossed around much, but this wasn’t something simple like an issue over who gets to eat the fattest hare. This was the life and death issue of kits. She gently swept them away from their mother’s body with a sweep of her long twisted tail, drawing them close to her. Her maternal instinct began to kick in as she looked into their baby blue eyes. It had been so long since she cared for kits. “It’s okay. You’re safe now,” she softly murmured as she began to lick the blood off of their fluffy coats. Her eyes widened slightly as she noticed one of the kit’s tails seemed awfully stiff. “Great Starclan, little one! I’ll have to bring you to Goosepaw when we get back.”

Frostkit looked at the big cats. She wailed as one pulled her from Mama and ran back to her. Then she placed a paw on Mama and realized that she was cold. "Mama?" Frostit wailed. She curled next to her then stood up shakily. She looked up and saw Littlekit and Blackkit by one of the cats. She was being nice and trying to get the red stuff off of them. Frostkit padded over slowly and collapsed at the cat's paws, her freezing tail swept beside her face. As a warm tounge was cleaning her fur, She relaxed a little. "Who are you....." Frostkit mewed, growing weaker from hunger and cold. She tried to stand up but fell, her legs collapsing under her. "Mama......" She wailed, her voice and body very weak now.

The chill of the night air had consumed the small kit, seeping down into his bones and overtaking his thoughts. Shivering not only at the freezing state of his body, but also fear. None of the recent events made sense in the tom’s mind, as he had no comprehension of death. No comprehension of the fact that his mother had been killed, and that the liquid staining his white pelt red was dripping from the tabby queen beside him. In addition to all of that, two unknown figures had appeared, and his terror grew and grew. Shaking, nearly violently, pressed against the large cold figure was how he tried to find safety. He searched for a spot to push, or nip, or claw to make his mother get up and help her kits. Little did he know that was not going to happen.

Suddenly, he wailed loudly as Blackkit felt himself being swept away from his mother, swinging wildly to attempt to grab onto her familiar body and hold himself there. But it was no use. After merely a few swings, the tom gave into the tail pulling him and his siblings away from the body of their mother. Feeling warmth now near, he looked up into the larger she-cat’s eyes, still unsure of every event that had been happening. All he knew was now he was close to warmth, even if it wasn’t with his mother, and he was being cleaned of that sticky, cold liquid that had covered him. Slowly, but surely, he gave into this turn of events, curling up near the bigger cat to obtain as much warmth as possible.

Frostkit felt her breathing slow but fought hard to keep herself alive. She stood up, her legs about to collapse under her. She slowly made her way back to Mama, having no idea she was dead and couldn't help her. She collapsed on the cold tabby fur and looked up to see a cat coming closer to Mama and her. She tried to run from the other cat but when she tried to stand, she fell on the other cat's paws, panting. The world spun and she closed her eyes. "Help....." Frostkit mewed, her voice almost a whisper. She curled up near the cat's paws. She was too weak to care what happened next. She fell into a deep, troubled sleep.
