Duckpuddle looked down at the two apprentices that decided to pad over, and a small smile appeared on her brown muzzle. However, the voice of her anxiety at the back of her mind was telling her that this was a terrible idea. The last time that she had led a hunting patrol that consisted of apprentices, she had failed to protect them. Darkspirit, who had been named Darkpaw at the time, had died. The she-cat couldn't help but blame herself for it whenever she thought about it. These were Jaystream's kits. Jaystream as in the deputy of RiverClan. If anything were to happen to them, then he'd probably end up blaming her.
What if she got exiled?
What if she got executed?
Trying to hide back a shiver of fear, the brown warrior flicked her tail.
"Of course you two can come. Let's get going."
As she led the two of them out into the territory, she made a silent promise to try and keep an eye on both them and her prey while they were hunting. Nothing would happen... not today. Luck couldn't be that cruel to her.
"Alright. We should all aim for three pieces of prey, but if you end up being quick and catching more, then that just means more prey to bring home to the Clan. Try to stay close to me. You don't have to be right beside me the entire time, but don't branch off too far. Anything could happen, and I don't want you two to get hurt."
With that, the RiverClanner instantly spotted a frog hopping around near the river. Silently yet swiftly, the she-cat made her way towards the creature so that she could make an attempt to kill it. The size was enough to feed a whole litter of kits, and maybe even their mother, too. Hoping that she wouldn't end up messing up this catch, Duckpuddle sprang towards the creature with her claws outstretched. The frog seemed to be too quick for her. The RiverClanner ended up landing on the spot right as the creature hopped away, and she sank her claws into the dirt so that she wouldn't fall straight into the river.
Great. Now, she had missed a frog, and she had quite possibly scared away all the fish because of her ungraceful landing that had cast her shadow on the water. Feeling heat begin to warm her entire face, Duckpuddle avoided the gazes of the other apprentices. Her anxiety, like the cold talons of an eagle, gripped her throat and began to choke her. Miraculously, she managed to hide everything she felt.
