Blooming Hazel - Closed

The sun has already risen half-way up the sky by the time Leopardclaw was done sending out and assigning the day's patrols, and once the cats gathered around the Highrock had dispersed the golden spotted deputy turned his weary paws towards the warrior's den.  He had basically just woken up, but these last few sunrises he couldn't seem to be able to retain any energy, and his body cried out constantly for sleep and relief.  Alas though, his rest was usually broke by terrorizing dreams, filled with flowing blood and the cries of his beloved family, yowling for him to rescue them from their pain.  He had woken up in a cold sweat too many times now to count, and even as his paws directed him towards his comfortable nest, his knew deep in his mind that he wouldn't be able to stay there long.  Either he would be woken by that, or by one of his clanmates needing or reporting something.  

With a long sigh, Leopardclaw hung his head and padded back towards the Highrock, before spotting someone out of the corner of his eyes.  Hazelpaw.  A twinge of guilt automatically struck his chest at the sight of the young tabby apprentice; thanks do his numerous duties and...current predicament he had severely neglected her training, opting to send her out with other cat's patrols or training parties.  He was free now though, and needed to keep himself busy, so he didn't hesitate long before he trotted across the clearing to greet her with a tense half smile.  "Hazelpaw, how about a hunting patrol?  We can go up along the SkyClan border, patrols keep reporting squirrel scent near there."

"Oh! Um... y-yes, of course!" Hazelpaw mumbled, jumping at Leopardclaw's words. Even though he was her mentor, she hadn't trained much with him yet, and she was always shy around any cat. "Squirrels!" she repeated nervously, cursing herself for sounding stupid. When she became a warrior, everything would be simpler. She wouldn't have to be with other cats on patrol, for the most part, and she could go hunt by herself. She wouldn't be expected to attend training sessions and hunting practice - the only problem was that she had to survive her warrior ceremony, where the whole Clan would be looking at her. Sighing, she pushed her thoughts aside and fell into step behind Leopardclaw.

Despite everything that was weighing on his mind, Leopardclaw couldn't help but smile at his apprentice's remark before leading the way out of camp, and out into the forest towards the SkyClan border.  He lifted his muzzle high, scenting the air for any prey scent.  Squirrel or not, the clan needed food.

Hazelpaw nodded, not wanting to say anything else that would make her sound ridiculous. She followed Leopardclaw in silence until he stopped, so she trotted a short distance away to hunt. She quickly spotted a squirrel. Squirrels, she thought. What mouse-brains. She dropped into a crouch and stalked it carefully, pouncing at just the right distance. She killed the squirrel with a quick bite to the neck and scraped dirt over it before turning to find her next quarry.

Leopardclaw hesitated before going after one of the prey scents that littered the area to watch Hazelpaw sneak up on a squirrel, and gave her an approving nod as she killed it with a swift bite.  Turning away, the spotted deputy chose to follow the scent of a bird that was very close-by, placing his paws down carefully on the slushy ground so as to not make any sound.  Soon enough his quarry was in sight; a jay, it's blue feathers contrasting against the muddy earth as it pecked around in a patch of roots.  Flattening himself into a hunting crouch, Leopardclaw carefully crept up behind the bird, and launched himself forward with a quick spring.  Pinning the fairly large bird, he snapped it's neck with one sharp bite, and the bird hung limp in his jaws.

Hazelpaw dropped silently into a hunting crouch as she spotted a small, scrawny rabbit beside a bush. She narrowed her eyes as she stalked it, each pawstep barely stirring the air. When she was close enough, the apprentice pushed off the ground and landed on the rabbit, killing it with a quick bite.
