Despite the light dusting of snow that clung to the brittle grasses of the moor, several meager shoots of green were just barely visible through the snow, giving hope to the much awaited appearance of Newleaf. And with the constant snow, freezing weather, and lack of decent prey, it couldn't come soon enough. Shaking away the clumps of snow that now resided between her toes, Brindlewhisker found her gaze drifting down towards the tiny green stem that was just barely managing to break through the partially frozen snow. Apprentices were sort of like grass- they didn't appear for the longest time, but when they did they were constantly underpaw.

And boy was Brightpaw underpaw. He came bounding up to his mentor and was curiously wandering around her, wondering what she was looking at. "Whatcha doin' whatcha doin' whatcha doin'"? he asked. The snow on his paws was being thrown into the air, coating both of the cats with a light dusting. He shook it off and looked sheepishly at Brindlewhisker. S-sorry Brindlewhisker."

Brindlewhisker's gaze lifted from the small shoots of fresh grasses at the sound of pawsteps, her whiskers twitching slightly as she was greeted with the sight of an eager Brightpaw. The Deputy let out a short mrrow of amusement as she watched the young tom bounce about, although her mouth twisting wryly as she ended up being sprayed with a light dusting of snow. "I was just enjoying a bit of piece and quiet," Brindlewhisker mewed, "But now that you're here, I suppose we should move on with today's duties."

Brightpaw's whiskers twitched in excitement and curiosity. "What're we gonna do?" he asked, tilting his head slightly. Were they going to scout out enemy territory? Collide with an enemy patrol and duke it out? His head spun with all the crazy fantasies that he wanted to happen.

"I'm afraid we're not doing anything terribly exciting," Brindlewhisker hummed, reluctantly rising to her full height and shaking away the light coating of snow that still clung to her fur, "We're just going to work on your hunting skills for now." She decided, flicking her tail to beckon Brightpaw along. Carefully avoiding the precious fresh growth, the Deputy began to venture deeper into the territory, absently keeping an eye on the eager Brightpaw as she did so.

Brightpaw nodded, immediately turning his nose to the air and began sniffing. Some recent rabbit scents were near, but they had scattered since their arrival. Picking out one to follow, he assumed the stalking position and snuck along, eventually spotting it. The rabbit was old and slow, an easy target for an apprentice. After getting a safe distance away from it, he charged, chasing it down. He pounced onto the smaller creature and landed on top of it, albeit just barely. He quickly ended its life with a bite the neck. He picked up the fresh-kill in his mouth and brought it back over to his mentor with pride.

"Well done! That's quite an impressive first attempt." Brindlewhisker praised, giving Brightpaw a gentle prod between the ribs as he halted in front of her. Pushing past the young tom and following a fairly fresh scent trail, the Deputy came upon a young rabbit lingering outside a snow-heavy warren. Dropping into a neat crouch and observing the young rabbit for several long heartbeats, it seemed like a lifetime before she lunged. Ignoring the panicked squeal of the small creature, Brindlewhisker successfully ran down and neatly killed the rabbit within moments. Grasping the skinny creature and padding back to Brightpaw, her voice was muffled as she spoke once more, "Are you ready to continue?"
