Training for Swirlpaw (Closed)

Russetpelt poked his head into the apprentices’ den. ”Wake up, Swirlpaw. It’s time to train.”
He sat outside waiting for his new apprentice. They’d be learning how to hunt in the trees today. Climbing and Huntington in trees was one of SkyClan’s specialties and something every apprentice has to learn.

Swirlpaw woke and stretched. Today she would train with her new mentor. She slowly walked out of the apprentice den and looked around the corner making sure no one was there. She was still really shy and was glad that her mentor was a cat who knew her. She smiled at him a little. "what..will..we..be..doing..?" she asked softly.

”You’ll have to fully wake up for this lesson. I’ll be teaching you to climb, jump from tree to tree, and hunt in the trees. We may not be able to cover it all today, but we can try!” Russetpelt told the black and white she-cat. ”Go grab yourself a quick meal from the fresh-kill pile, then we can head out.”

She nodded and grabbed a mouse. She ate it then went back to russetpelt smiling. She waited until he said they where leaving.

Russetpelt grinned once his apprentice returned from her morning meal. ”Alrighty, lets go.”
He padded out of camp, glancing back to make sure Swirlpaw was following. He decided they would go to the place where his old mentor, Tinglegs, had brought him when he was first learning to hunt back when he was Russetpaw. ”Before we take on the trees, allow me to show you how to hunt on the ground first,” the red-brown warrior said. ”When you are stalking, be sure to step lightly, and watch out for leaves and twigs, or anything that could give you away. Keep your tail low, but not too low so it doesn’t swish up any leaves and make noise. Then, measure you distance between you and your target, so that you don’t overshoot you leap, or undershoot you leap.” The young warrior showed Swirlpaw the stalk and stance. Now he would show the young apprentice how to really catch something.

He opened his mouth, tasting the ear, and pricked his ears towards some rustling. He detected a squirrel. He dropped into the hunting crouch again, and just like how he showed before, crept up on the little furry varmint.
Carefully avoiding leaves, and trying hard to keep his tail still, he managed to lung at the squirrel, killing it with a swipe and a bite. He dropped the limp rodent by a tree and kicked on dirt over it. ”Now you try. See what you can smell and hear, and once you’ve targeted something, do what I’ve just taught you.”

swirlpaw watched in wonder and amazement as he caught the prey. she got in the same position he did and stalked a prey. when she felt close enough she pounced but the prey heard her and dodged. it ran off with swirlpaw still in the dirt. she shook her self and looked sadly at russetpelt.

”That’s alright! It took me two or three times before I caught my first prey. Why don’t you try again?” Russetpelt suggested. He could remember feeling so frustrated with himself after he had missed his prey for the third time. But after his third try, he was on a roll with hunting. It wasn’t long after he was catching much harder prey and Hunting in the trees.

Swirlpaw nodded and caught the scent of mouse. She crept up on the little creature and this time pounced with out it hearing her. She killed it in one bite and brought it to russetpelt smiling. .I..caught..it.."she said through  a mouthful of fur.

Russetpelt purred and nodded as his apprentice caught her first prey. "Wonderful!"
He noticed Swirlpaw seemed a little... not very... open? She was very shy, basically.
Russetpelt switched his attention to an oak tree. "Here, let me show you how to climb."
He padded up to it, dug his claws into his bark, and hauled himself up the trunk. Reaching forward, and pulling himself upwards, and repeated that until he got onto a branch. "Be sure to dig your claws deep into the bark, and pull yourself up with all your strength. Its best to take a quick break on a branch whenever you need too. Then you can continue higher. But since this is only your first time climb, just climb a couple branches higher than me."

Swirlpaw looked up as he climbed. She got really nervous and scared. "umm.o..OK.." she said and started to climb the tree. Half way up to russetpelt she all most fell and got scared. She regained her balance and started to climb again. When she was a branch higher than russetpelt she looked down and climbed to the branch. She was too scared to move.

”Great job! And don’t be scared. Use your tail to help you balance and you should be fine.” Russetpelt glanced at another oak tree. A blackbird sat perched on a branch. The warrior glanced back at Swirlpaw. ”Now I will show you how to hunt in a tree. Sometimes you have to jump to a different tree. Just find a good branch, or maybe two branches close to each other, and leap to them. Make sure your claws are extended as soon as you jump, and dig with deep into the bark when you land,” he explained.
The red-brown tom glanced at the black bird again to make sure it wasn’t going anywhere, then looked back at his apprentice. ”Catching prey in trees isn’t much different than land hunting when it comes to stalking and pouncing. Creep up on your prey, lightly stepping on each branch. When you get close enough, pounce! Oh and be sure to shift your position to get a good leap, since it’s easy to get a little lopsided when pouncing in trees.”

Russetpelt lunged himself onto a large branch in the other tree. He eyed the blackbird, crouching low, and carefully placing his paws on the branches as he stepped. Once he seemed to be close enough, he leaped at the bird, swiftly slashing it with his claws. He brought it back to the tree where Swirlpaw sat, and placed the limp prey carefully in a crevice between two small branches. ”Now you try. In fact, I think I see a sparrow in that maple tree next to us.” he pointed his tail to a maple next to them where, sure enough, a sparrow was perched.
