Sageleaf was stressed to put it simply. Between the events of the gathering, and her less than settling medicine cat ceremony, she had been on edge. Of course, because she would never let anyone know that she was internally a wreck, the she-cat had become irritable. Normally, her lack of patience was reserved for apprentices and warriors acting like mousebrains. But, as of late, it had translated into snapping at a kit and a couple of grumpy elders. She felt awful. The combination of her usual unhappiness with her position, the rise of the dark forest, and Starclan's less than comforting vision had transformed her into something she hated. There was no way she could change the future. Beetlewing had warned her of that in what time they had trained together. Starclan would only ever attempt to prepare them for the events that were to happen, but they could never be changed. This was why very few cats knew of what had been shared with her. They too would be less than comforted by the thought of the moors running red. That image had burned itself into the forefront of her memory as a reminder of what was to come.

And this was why she was standing before the clan deputy, struggling to find the right words to say. There was no way they could talk in camp. As much as she knew Ashstar needed to know of what she had seen, Sageleaf found herself fighting telling the leader for fear of worrying her. Brindlewhisker was the best place to start. The she-cat had taken her father's place after his treacherous acts against a Riverclan apprentice. However, the medicine cat had never held any sort of disdain for her, unlike her warrior brother. Before Beetlewing, Brindlewhisker had begun her training as a warrior. If there was any cat she looked up to a respected, it was most certainly Brindlewhisker. The two had become rather close in their short time together. There was no doubt that Sageleaf would eventually be the medicine cat serving under Brindlewhisker's future leadership. Their relational bond would last a long time. Yet, now, she stood there tongue tied and desperately searching for a simple lie to get the busy she-cat out of camp.

"Brindlewhisker... I-uh- I... do you have some free time? I could use some help with collecting some... roots." As the last word left her maw, Sageleaf's ears heated up with embarrassment. Never in her life had the young she-cat had trouble with knowing what to say. This was a first. Her paws shuffled awkwardly. While it wasn't still entirely a lie, it felt wrong to not share the whole intent of their journey into the territory. Sageleaf felt like a kit once more under the gaze of her former mentor. What made it worse was the fact that she was supposed to be a full medicine cat now. Asking the deputy for help collecting precious supplies for the clan shouldn't be this difficult. Especially since it was Brindlewhisker. She looked up at the other cat and attempted a smile, which came off as more of a grimace than anything.

Of the Future and the Past [Closed] Empty
PostSubject: Re: Of the Future and the Past [Closed]   Of the Future and the Past [Closed] EmptyThu 24 Aug 2017 - 21:18

Laying sprawled out in the sun of the day was one of the best ways for Brindlewhisker to help wash away all the new aches and pains she had picked up during the chaos of the Gathering- she didn't enjoy all the various herbs and poppyseeds that she had been given in an attempt to further speed her healing process. Plus they often made her feel groggy or suffer from nausea at inconvenient times and it was rarely worth the hassle and waste of resources. After dealing with Goldenflame's death and the Tribe's apparent unknowing betrayal of the Clans, she could use all the rest she could get. But it was at times like this, whenever the rest of the Clan left her alone and unbothered, that her thoughts began to stray to places that they normally wouldn't. Thoughts that she would never have time for during the day or during her precious moments of sleep. Brindlewhisker would often find herself thinking things such as Swoop's dying words, The Mist saving her Clan from the fire before turning on them, Dawnlight and Goldenflame, Dewtuft, or even Sageleaf.

She had only ever bore two sons of her own blood yet Sageleaf was like the daughter she had never been able to conceive but somehow fortunate enough to look after like she was. She had always wanted a daughter too- they were the ones who took care of their mothers when they grew old while their sons went off to fight in battle after battle and war after war. It was this very bond between them that had clued her into Sageleaf's obviously distressed behavior and left her worrying- perhaps the events of the Gathering had been too much for the young Medicine Cat who was already beneath too much stress? Did another Medicine Cat share secretive worrisome news? Or perhaps a message from StarClan? Brindlewhisker found herself unable to answer any of her own questions and was forced to resign and simply watch Sageleaf's troublesome behavior with a heavy heart.

So whenever Sageleaf finally decided to approach her about whatever was bothering her, Brindlewhisker was ecstatic...until the Medicine Cat started talking about roots. Roots. Gather roots? Were roots actually ever even used in the healing process? But then again what did she know about the healing process when all she did was occasionally get patched back up? Despite all of the confused thoughts racing in her mind, she managed to keep her face a mask of neutrality to make sure that Sageleaf didn't catch onto her onslaught of disappointment. "Roots?" She echoed with a barely tangible hint of curiosity, "I don't mind helping you, I just don't know very many good places to search for them." She continued, although this time she rose to her paws as she spoke and gave herself a brisk shake as she did so, her body language contrasting the somewhat despondent words.

Sageleaf's tail twitched awkwardly when the deputy responded with a confused and less than enthusiastic tone. However, it felt as if half of the weight in her chest was lifted as the deputy agreed anyways. She brightened and meowed quickly, "It's okay I know where we can go. There's a lot in the tunnels. Most of the other clans dig them up but we have the advantage with tunnels..." The medicine cat trailed off, realizing in her nervousness she had begun to ramble about stuff that Brindlewhisker more than likely did not really care to hear. After shutting up, she turned on her heels to pad, almost sprint, to the camp entrance. The combination of finally being able to talk with her former mentor, along with the current anxiety, quickened her step. It was only a moment before she was racing across the moors. Urgency drove her forwards. The sooner they could talk about all of this the better.

Since there were no distractions, they made their way quickly to the tunnels. Not only could she actually get some good roots here, but it would be a great place for a private conversation. Privacy was hard to come by in such an open territory. Sageleaf stared into the apparently endless, dark tunnel mouth that stood before her. It wasn't incredibly large, maybe a little less than a tail-length. The tunnels were meant for skinny Windclan cats. There was something chilling about the pressing darkness. Even if she knew of all the things these passages had to offer, she had never been in her herself. It was certainly intimidating, but the she-cat took and deep breath and stepped into the dirt trails. She glanced over her shoulder to make sure Brindlewhisker was following. Her whiskers brushed against the walls, guiding her a fair distance in. Roots hung from overhead. Even in the dark, it was easy for her to pick out the different ones.

"This should be good." Sageleaf meowed, stopping finally. They had reached a patch where a good variety seemed to be growing overhead. Even better, there was no way any cat would be in earshot from this deep in. Her nose brushed the roof of the tunnel, searching for the right kinds. After a couple of moments, the medicine cat knew exactly what to get. That meant it was time to explain to the clueless deputy how to handle this. Brindlewhisker was a very smart cat, but this specific task was out of her element. A brief purr almost bubbled up in the younger cat's throat. For once, she was the one teaching her old mentor. It was a refreshing change. She made sure to pass on all she knew from Beetlewing, "Okay, so you need to make sure you use your teeth and claws closest to the top of the root. None of this will kill you, but ingesting to much could mean bellyache. You also don't want to yank. Loosening the dirt could mean a cave-in, which would not be good for us."

Putting most her weight on her hind legs, the medicine cat reached up to quickly demonstrate. She used her tail to point out which ones they needed to the deputy. Together, the pair would be able to gather quite the stock to bring back to camp. After the gathering, everything was necessary. There was no doubt she would be going out for leaves sometime soon. However, this was the priority right now, for more reasons than one. Her and Brindlewhisker needed to talk. Some cat needed to know about the blood-soaked image that seemed to haunt her. If there was anyone she was comfortable sharing with, it was the cat she looked up to. But, something held her back from immediately speaking up about it. It felt strange to randomly bring up the omen she had held onto for the past couple sunrises. So, she held her tongue as they plucked the roots from the earthy ceiling.

"The tunnels?" Brindlewhisker echoed, although before she had anymore time to question just why they had to go down into the cold and foul-smelling tunnels, Sageleaf was practically sprinting towards the entrance. A short huff of protest escaped the Deputy's mouth as she started off after her former apprentice- normally she needed to stretch before she did any sort of strenuous running like this or else she'd pull something. Swallowing down any further complaints, she quickly closed the gap between herself and the Medicine Cat as they quickly made their way to the nearest tunnel that apparently held these much-needed 'roots'. She hardly had time to notice that the tunnel Sageleaf had selected for their little herb-gathering expedition was conveniently located a sizable distance away from any other patrol routes.

Slipping down after Sageleaf with an internal wince, Brindlewhisker began to quietly pad after the young Medicine Cat, feeling her chest tighten ever-so-slightly as the damp tunnel walls slowly began to press down around her menacingly. Hopefully these roots were desperately needed if they were going through this much effort for them. Despite the fact that she had ventured into the tunnels on numerous occasions and how she had lead expeditions into the Mothermouth, she was never quite comfortable with the total darkness and cramped feeling that accompanied the tunnels. She'd heard too many stories from the Elders who knew cats who had perished within the StarClan-forsaken tunnels going after prey or by some other unfortunate idea. However, before she had any time to fully succumb to her panicked and uncomfortable feelings, Sageleaf halted their little expedition.

"If you say so." Brindlewhisker answered doubtfully, her pupils flaring as her gaze lifted to the ceiling to observe the tangled mat of roots that hung from above- even in the darkness the stringy outline of the roots were incredibly prominent. The pungent scent of the roots were almost enough to mask the dank and rotten smell of earth that filled the tunnel. Almost. Swallowing another sigh, Brindlewhisker focused her attention on watching Sageleaf's motions and instructions carefully, not willing to even think about the risk of a cave-in; being in the tunnels was an uncomfortable enough experience for her, but the thought of choking on dry dirt was enough to make her ready to bolt. However, once she began to follow her former apprentice's motions, she began to calm down a bit more- having busy work helped clear her head a bit.

"Call me mad," Brindlewhisker began softly, sitting back on her hind legs as she continued to carefully follow Sageleaf's example, "But I have a feeling that an apprentice or two could of easily helped you with this task. So why did you really need my help?" She questioned in a soft whisper, feeling the urge to keep her voice quiet due to the hushed atmosphere that filled the tunnel. Using diligent forepaws, the Deputy began to gently pull at a designated root, wincing slightly as it eventually came free with a slight spray of loose earth.

Sageleaf's blood ran cold as the deputy asked for the truth. Apparently, it had been that obvious. Her mind raced again, trying to find how to word this. Eyes staring at the dirt floor, the medicine cat's feet shuffled awkwardly. As she glanced up to attempt to open her mouth, the first thing they settled on was Brindlewhisker ripping a root from the earth. As dirt scattered, panic rose in her chest. Without thinking, her paw flashed out to tap the deputy on the head. Her voice was low as she hissed urgently, "Were you not listening? That is exactly how you kill us!" The medicine cat had hoped that they could come down here to get away. This section was fairly stable, but pulling away all the roots would not help their case. Sageleaf sighed and grumbled an apology before quickly demonstrating again.

"You're right, though..." She began once she was able to speak comfortably. Her eyes glanced at Brindlewhisker to gauge her face and make sure she was still doing things properly before speaking, "Starclan has send me an omen about the clan. I'm afraid nothing good is coming for us, Brindlewhisker. I'm not sure what to do. They've never spoken to me like this before. Without Beetlewing, I'm not sure what to do... I don't know what this means..." Words trailed off into the darkness of the tunnel. Sageleaf felt them drift off without a clear answer. Even if her former mentor had ideas, there was no guarantee that they would be the right ones. Has Brindlewhisker ever spoken with Starclan? Did she know? Maybe it would be best to wait until the next medicine cat meeting?

Sageleaf's heart raced as she waited for some sort of response. She had not even shared any details yet. What terrified her the most was sharing the idea that she had some terrible fear Slatethroat was somehow involved in everything. The way Gorsefeather had mentioned his name with such a strange tone before everything had descended into blood. A chill sent her fur on end. If she were to share that much with Brindlewhisker, her brother could be targeted. She was torn internally between what it could possibly mean for her clan and what this could mean for the kin. For now, nothing on the matter left her maw. Her paws froze to the ground as she waited for a response. The root collection was currently a long forgotten memory.

Shaking the dirt free from her head, Brindlewhisker hardly had time to regain her bearings before the other she-cat beside her was frantically scolding her and promptly thwacking her paw at her. A soft snort of laughter escaped her mouth after Sageleaf's little blow to her head, her head shaking slightly at the look on the Medicine Cat's face. "Relax, it's been a mild season this Greenleaf- there hasn't been enough rain for the stronger tunnels like this to become completely unsteady." She chided softly, amusement evident in her words, although she dutifully noted the younger she-cat's complaint and made a note to be more careful in the ever so exciting duty of root pulling. However, Sageleaf's next quiet words made her blood run cold within her veins.

Whipping around to study Sageleaf with an understandably frightened expression, Brindlewhisker did her best to hold her tongue as her former apprentice relayed what she saw, her previously amused behavior dying miserably. Nothing good coming for them? Her entire life had been littered with strife after strife and clash after clash and now StarClan was presenting them with...this? They had just barely survived the battle with RiverClan all those moons ago and now they were facing another enemy of some sort? Unbelievable. fugg u starclan stop this. Swallowing tightly and forcing herself to regain her composure, Brindlewhisker remained quiet for several painfully long heartbeats as she struggled to process Sageleaf's words.

"What did they say exactly?" Brindlewhisker finally questioned softly, burning curiosity evident in her sharp gaze as she spoke. Although this was an issue that was probably more Ashstar's specialty, perhaps they could work out a more plausible justification to this apparent omen before approaching her. The dull task of gathering roots was quickly abandoned as the Deputy turned to look at Sageleaf intently, obvious apprehension visible in her tense shoulders and solemn expression.

"Not much unfortunately..." Sageleaf mumbled, her gaze fixing on a spot in the dark behind her deputy. She had not forgotten Gorsefeather's ominous warning, and the idea of his involvement still gnawed at her belly. There was something happening and no doubt Slatethroat played a big part in it. But, she could not bring herself to place her brother under suspect. There was no telling what would happen to him if Brindlewhisker and Ashstar knew that her brother was somehow involved in the omen that damned their clan. A shudder ran down her spine as she remembered the chilling tone that the deceased medicine cat had spoken in. Worse still was the image of the crimson tide of blood as it flowed over the hills. Her claws dung into the ground and she took a deep breath as she collected her thoughts.

"They showed me our territory... blood swept over the moorlands. And that was it. Nothing more. They didn't tell me anything, Brindlewhisker. I don't know what it means." As she shared her fears alone, her voice began to tremble slightly. The thought of whatever was coming scared her half to death. Not only did it involve her clan, but more specifically her brother. None of that could mean any good. She returned her stare to her paws after a moment and they shuffled awkwardly against the ground. Now her former mentor knew of the trouble that had plagued her mind for a few sunsets now. It was all in the open now.

Blood drenched moorland? And nothing more? Not any sort of single word of warning? The only thing worse than Starclan's apparently cruelty was their wicked amusement in being incredibly vague.

"I see." Is all Brindlewhisker quietly murmured, her face drawn with an intense reservation and displeasure, suddenly looking much older than she actually was. Feeling her shoulders draw in as she gazed at the ground, the Deputy continued to remain silent as Sageleaf's words played over and over in her whirling head. Why did they believe that a cat who was still practically a kit, a kit who barely even had a mentor at that, could interpret a wordless and incredibly foreboding omen like this? "Just the moor.." She whispered to herself, feeling her ears fall flat against her skull as she continued to gaze at the dark, damp tunnel floor beneath her paws in a withdrawn manner. What good was an omen if Starclan wasn't even kind enough to show them a mere glimpse of what they were facing? She was surprised at the amount of anger and frustration that was bubbling heatedly beneath her fur and it took a good moment of steely willing to keep herself in check.

Perhaps it was due to her previous inhibitions about entering the tunnel mixed with her rapidly mounting feels of anger, despair, and fear, but the dark walls of the tunnel slowly began to press in all around her.  A panicky fluttering began to beat deep within Brindlewhisker's chest as her head quickly lifted to stare at the wall in astonishment as she suddenly found herself unable to draw a proper breath. All she could smell and taste was rotting grass, foul mud, and the stale scent of all the other animals that had likely died in the tunnels, while all she could hear was her former apprentice's words. "Tell Ashstar about this," Brindlewhisker suddenly sighed with uncharacteristic sharpness, "She speaks to Starclan regularly- she'll be of more help." She managed to offer up the practically worthless advice before whirling around and abandoning the tunnels, the roots she had pulled promptly trampled in her hasty exit. She was just the Deputy- a newly appointed one at that! Speaking to Starclan and interpreting whatever omens they threw down was far outside of her jurisdiction.
