Let's Not Rush Into Things [Closed]

Flamestrike shook away the grogginess from his head. Sleep hadn't come easy that night, as was usual. The nightmares stole away an attempts for a peaceful sleep he so longed for. The orange warrior only wanted escape from this reality. Between Bear and the loss of his nephew, everything was unbelievably numbing. However, life had to go on. Honeydrop had been the only thing to distract him.  Since they had returned after the battle, Flamestrike had simply done what was asked of him. He heaved himself to his feet and went to pad over to the apprentice's den. While his stomach rumbled with a hunger he'd been ignoring, that would have to wait until later. Rushpaw's training had certainly been neglected. Flamestrike had almost forgotten he had been given an apprentice. Just another thing the warrior needed to work on. Leopardstar probably thought it was a mistake to give a rogue an apprentice with how far behind the younger cat probably was.

A barely audible sigh escaped his chest. Training was the last thing he wanted to do today. The last time he had spent much time around younger cats had been Hazeflight's litter; none of that had ended well. Of course, the loss of Barkkit was another strike too. Let's hope I don't mess this one up, He thought bitterly. His flame orange tail flicked back and forth as he walked through the young night sky. The sun was barely finished setting and it only intensified his pelt color. Once he had made it over to the apprentice's den, his head poked through to look over the barely moving lumps of fur. Apprentices did not yet have the responsibility of rising so early. He missed those days. Carefully, his long legs made their way over the sleeping frame's and to Rushpaw's.

"Wake up. Its time to train." He meowed flatly as he prodded the apprentice. Flamestrike then turned to wait at the entrance. Hopefully, the young cat wouldn't take long.

Immediately, Rushpaw woke up and burst out of the apprentice den.  "Training?  Okay."  Yes!  I'm one step closer to becoming a warrior!

The side of Flamestrike's mouth twitched slightly into what could have once possibly been a smile. Any chance of a smile had been had been drastically diminished by recent events. Normally, the younger tom's enthusiasm would have greatly amused him. Today, his whiskers barely twitched. He walked quickly through the camp exit. The orange tom didn't even bother to glance to see if his apprentice was close behind. Even with my long legs, that kit has enough energy to keep up, He rationalized, pushing away a spark of care. His chest was too hallow for the normal feelings.

"Show me your best hunting crouch." A raspy, flat-toned meow broke from his chest. They wouldn't bother with borders. Given how long Rushpaw had been an apprentice, he was sure the younger cat had seen them at least once. Even with an inattentive mentor, it would be impossible for an apprentice to simply be left in camp all the time. However, Flamestrike was still here to teach. Hunting seemed like that best place to start. After doing the usual border run, Hazeflight had started out with stalking techniques. First hunting, then fighting, He noted internally with a small nod. Grimly, he realized he certainly had fighting experience to share now.

Rushpaw crouched down, tail down, ready to pounce.

"Good." He complimented without much enthusiasm. It wasn't a bad attempt for their first round. His tail twitched with a slight annoyance. The patience he one would have had with an apprentice was long gone. Flamestrike pushed back his impatience to instruct the young tom, "Make sure your tail doesn't drag. Keep your weight even. And show me a pounce." The warrior instructed simply.

Rushpaw lifted his tail a little bit, kept his weight even, and pounced.

Flamestrike nodded his approval. His ear flicked towards the direction of a soft sound rustling through the undergrowth. A frog, He figured out, scenting the air. With a flick of his tail towards it, he signaled for Rushpaw to attempt to catch it. The orange tom's eyes narrowed to slits as he watched with interest.

Rushpaw saw the frog, hopping away from him.  As he got closer, he pounced. Got it! he thought with the limp frog in his paws.

"Good." Flamestrike nodded his approval. There would have been a time in which the apprentice's skill would have impressed and overjoyed him, but that was now lost to the orange warrior. His green eyes blinked and he sighed lightly. Training a young cat was going to demand a lot of his now frail patience, especially since all the tom wanted to do was curl up in his nest and die. He flicked his tail towards a patch of marshy earth, "Bury it. We will come back later." With that, he disappeared further into the forest.
