Ryepaw's Assessment

Hazefur sat by the gorse entrance, waiting for her son. He needed an assessment, but Ashstar had been busy lately and asked her for help with it. She honestly looked forward to assessing Ryepaw and she knew he would most likely be as well.

Limping towards his mother, Ryepaw gave a simple nod to his mother, wondering why Ashstar wasn't here to take him on a patrol. Probably just busy with other leader business, he reassured himself, not minding at all that he got to spend time with Hazefur. Looking up to the grey and white she-cat, he titled his head, curious as to what she had planned for the day. Though still a smaller and weaker than other cats, he'd still been growing stronger everyday and wondered when he'd be appointed his warrior name. Hopefully sometime soon.

Hazefur smiled down at Ryepaw as he approached. "I'm sure you are looking forward to your assessment?" She asked, getting to her paws. "Because today is the day, let's go on and head out!" The she-cat mewed in a cheery tone, turning and leading the way out of the tunnel.

Listening to his mother, Ryepaw's heart fluttered when she mentioned his assessment. He was actually going to become a warrior? Was this really happening? A small smile grew on his crooked muzzle, and giving a small nod, followed his mother as they headed out of the camp. The grey and white tom still didn't enjoy leaving the camp, but if it meant he would get his warrior name, then so be it.

Hazefur smiled, "come long then," she mewed softly, pushing through the other end of the tunnel. The pair padded through the territory until eventually Hazefur had lead Ryepaw to the little shallow dip in the moor that was a great place to train, or in this case complete an assessment. She sat down, waiting for Ryepaw to join her.

"So, I want to see you catch at least two rabbits." She smiled, "I know you can do it."

Following slightly behind Hazefur, the two cats arrived at a small dip in the land and upon catching up to her, titled his head to the side in a curious sort of way. Catch two rabbits seemed easy enough, but for someone like him, he had his doubts, but none the less, he knew that he needed to at least try. Giving a nod to his mother, the white and grey tom opened his jaw and limped away from her, scenting out prey. Although in many ways he was admittedly a weird cat, his sense of smell was one of the best in the clan and he had to thank StarClan for that.

Creeping as silently as he could through the tall grass, the absence of his mother sent a shiver down his spine. Did he really just leave her? What if something happened?

Lost in thought, his head started to spin from the overwhelming emotions, but the sound of something rustling in the nearby grass snapped him back to his task. Sure enough, a small rabbit sat nibbling on some moor grass, oblivious to the cat that stood a cat-length or two away. Crouching down, Ryepaw peered through the shrubbery and lowered his hackles, trying to recall everything that he'd been taught. Eagerness to catch the prey and bring it to his mother made the apprentice itch with excitement and after a few moments of waiting, he used all the strength he had in his three legs to pounce.

Taking the rabbit by surprise, it let out a squeal and turned around to dart off, but it'd acted too late. Jumping onto the piece of possible prey, Ryepaw let out a growl of annoyance as he dug his claws into its side. Having a weak jaw also put him at a disadvantage, and when he bit down onto the rabbit's neck, it took a few seconds to struggle before it stopped breathing.

Spitting out the odd yet somewhat satisfying taste of blood that clung to his saliva, he looked down to his kill. It was a messy kill, but at least he'd gotten something.

Burying the rabbit, Ryepaw padded away from the area and opened his jaw once more, looking for any other signs of prey.

After a few heartbeats Hazefur got to her paws, following Ryepaw's scent trail before eventually spotting him. She crouched behind a clump of taller grasses, watching as he used his sense of smell to track down and kill a rabbit. It was in fact a sloppy kill, but the fact that he had gotten something successfully so quick sent a shiver of pride down the she-cats spine.

Making his was slowly but surely about the territory, Ryepaw soon spotted another rabbit and decided to give hunting it a try.

Crouching down once more, he stalked as close as he could towards the rabbit. Bunching up his hind legs, the apprentice decided to try and use a new tactic he'd been working on for hunting purposes. Pouncing, he headbutted the rabbit's side, knocking the wind out of it. Sprawling out onto the ground and scrambling to get up, the he was ready, and before it was able to get up, made the killing blow.

Sitting down an feeling a little tired, Ryepaw waited for Hazefur to show up and hoped that she approved of his hunt.

After a moment of watching her son attack and successfully kill another rabbit, she emerged from her hiding place. "Nice catches! I'd say this was a successful hunt," she purred. "Now, let's patrol the borders before we head back to camp." She suggested, but before waiting for an answer she turned and began to lead the way toward the closest border, knowing Ryepaw would quickly follow.

Glad that his mother seemed to approve of his work, Ryepaw stood up and followed the she-cat, somewhat excited. He'd actually made it this far and before he knew it, he'd be a warrior! Well, hopefully.

Hazefur lead him through the territory, eventually making it to a border. She marked it and waited for him to do the same. She glanced over at Ryepaw before speaking, "now, let's head back to camp, I'd say you've done wonderfully on your assessment." She purred, "Ashstar will be proud, you'll be a warrior in no time." The warrior finished, then turned and began to lead her son away from the freshly marked border.

With a shy smile, Ryepaw followed his mother back to camp, his paws itching with excitement and nervousness. This was really happening and although he was somewhat scared for how his future might be, he couldn't help but be a bit excited and anxious. All of his hard work had really paid off, hadn't it?
