Poplarpaw's Hunting Patrol

Swiftheart was only newly appointed and already has an apprentice, Poplarpaw. She would train him to be a loyal warrior. She hoped he would never stray from RiverClan. She stuck her head into the apprentice den. "Poplarpaw, we're going on a hunting patrol. We should try to catch lots of prey." she said. Green-leaf is normally the best time to teach hunting, but if she waited that long, the apprentice would end up waiting longer than others like herself.

Poplarpaw flicked his ear at the sound of a voice calling for him, he lifted his head and blinked a few times before realizing it was his mentor trying to get his attention. "Oh, I'll be right out!" He chimed, a sudden wave of excitement rippling through his pelt at the mention of his first patrol out with his mentor.

Swiftheart nodded and stepped out. When Poplarpaw got out, the two head out. When they got into the territory, she turned to her apprentice. "Okay, Poplarpaw. What do you smell?" she asked.

Poplarpaw lifted his muzzle in the air, taking in the scents around him. Definitely a type of bird, he thought, and glanced to his side. "Smells like duck, mallard perhaps." He suggested, pretty confident in his answer.

Swiftheart lifted her head. She turned her ears around to pick up the sound of the waterfowl. They're usually noisy. She finally heard it squacking away. She pointed her tail to that direction. She got down and stalked it. She saw it. Twolegs were throwing some chunk of light brown web. The prey gulped it down. The twolegs retreated. She turned to Poplarpaw. "See if you can catch it. Before it retreats to the water." she said.

Poplarpaw flicked his ears in the direction of the prey, watching as the two-legs blundered away. His answer was a simple nod, and in moments he was stalking away through the reeds.

The apprentice shuffled his way quietly toward the unsuspecting duck, watching as it began to turn and head back for the water. Oh no you don't he thought, and once he had found himself close enough, the brown tabby tom shot from his hiding place, stride quick. He landed a blow on the prey, and it let out a squawk of surprise. Before it could react, Poplarpaw bite down hard on it's neck, hearing a slight pop noise.

He backed away from his prey, taking in it's mangled feathers before gingerly picking it up and heading back over to Swiftheart.

Swiftheart smiled and nodded. Any type of bird is great for leaf bare, not only for prey, but they also have feathers for warmth. She saw another waterfowl on the ground, she was about to catch it, but all of a sudden, a twoleg kit shrieked in delight and ran to it. The waterfowl was startled and ran back to the water. She stopped smiling. 'Stupid twoleg kits! Why do they get excited over the tiniest things?! Even our kits have more self control than that!' she thought. She doesn't usually think and act like this, but she just wants as much prey as possible. "They should really apprentice their young." she whispered to hide her thoughts. She suddenly scented another thing, another waterfowl, probably the one the kit startled. She spotted it. She crept out. She looked around, thankfully, the twoleg kit didn't notice it, it was busy running around. She looked back at the duck. She hesitated, then ran, claws sheathed to stay silent. Her claws didn't unsheathe until she leaped for it. Her teeth bit into it's neck. The duck let out a terrified and surprised squawk. After a few seconds, that squawk died out. She brought the prey back and set it next to the other one. No other prey was out, the rest of the waterfowl stayed in. There wasn't scent of prey. "I can't scent any more prey, and the other ducks are to frightened to set foot on land, I think we should head back."

Poplarpaw watched as his mentor tracked down another duck, and slowly shook his head as the mouse-brained two-leg kit chased it off. "I agree," he mewed quietly, then watched as Swiftheart's attention was taken again by another bird.

He nodded in agreement when she came back with the second bird. There certainly wasn't anymore ducks considering the racket the two-leg kit was causing.
