Leafbare's Blessing [Open Birth Topic]

Moonlight was resting on her nest with a smile. This was her second time inside the nursery, and her big belly was more than enough for any cat to know why. Thanks the experience she earned with her first litter she finally knew what she was supposed to expect from this one and even if she wasn’t an expert she was clearly calmer this time thanks to it. Her mind was drifting to her kits over and over again as she looked the white wonderland bathed in sunlight right outside the warm den. Part of her wished that the kits would inherit their father’s long fur instead of her short one, knowing how much it would help them during this terribly cold season, but that immediately made her wonder what pelt colors would their kits have? Would they be big or small? Would any of them have a disability like Cherrymist?

Questions after questions ran through her mind as she looked at the slowly falling snowflakes that looked like tiny stars from her position in the nursery as soon as the sunlight got reflected on them. However, her time of meditation and wondering came to an abrupt halt when she felt the first contraction, and she knew perfectly what that meant “Oceanlight! Rabbitpaw! Tinylegs!” Dear StarClan, why she didn’t ask for the stick earlier that day? She had a feeling that this would happen, but she just shrugged it off as nervousness and now she was regretting it, as she would need to wait for the Ocenlight or Rabbitpaw to bring it to her “T-the kits are coming!”.

Laying outside of the warrior's den, Tinylegs let out a content sigh. Besides the somewhat annoying cold weather, life couldn't have been better. Clan life for SkyClan had been pretty peaceful and trying to contain his excitement shifted his thoughts to Moonlight. His beautiful and wonderful mate was close to kitting and the small tom was just barely able to hold in his emotions. Would the kits look more like him or her? What personalities, features, what would they like, dislike? Would Moonlight make it through kitting? Would all of them be healthy?

Overwhelmed with thoughts and questions, Moonlight's yowl snapped him out of his trance and shooting his head up, looked to the nursery. Did she just call his name?

The second meow was a bit more panicked and Tinylegs knew exactly what it meant. The kits were coming!

As fast as his little legs could take him, the small white tom raced to the nursery and skidded to a halt in front of his mate, thankful that he didn't accidentally trip over someone or a kit. "The kits are coming?" he meowed, an excited edge to his voice. Being their second litter, Tinylegs knew what to expect but even so, he was about ready to burst with joy.

Rabbitpaw quickly jolted awake from her casual nap out in the camp as she heard her name cry out from the nursery. The voice sounded familiar, and with it coming out of the nursery, that could only mean one thing. "H-Hold on!" she cried in response, leaping to her paws and running to the medicine den. Grabbing what she needed, she ran into the nursery, pushing others out of the way as she did so. "Moonlight! You're doing great!" she mewed, trying to stay optimistic. "Here, take this stick. Tinylegs can you... uh, can you go grab some wet moss for me?" It was strange telling her elders what to do, but it was part of her job. Besides, moss was always good right? It was kind of her polite way of asking him to move so that she could do what she needed in the small space of the nursery.

Getting right to work, Rabbitpaw pressed gently on Moonlight's stomach, helping the movement of the kits even if just a little. After feeling them, they were certainly ready. "Okay Moonlight, when you're ready, push!"

Moonlight smiled with relief as Tinylegs and Rabbitpaw rushed in. However, her relief was cut short by another contraction, causing her to lower ear ears and claw at the soft nest where she had been resting until then. She accepted the stick Rabbitpaw was offering to her as soon as she could reach it, holding it tightly between her teeth and pushing as soon as the Medicine cat apprentice told her that she was good to go.

A small gray-and-white she-kit dropped onto the soft mossy ground as she was abruptly pushed from her mother.  The she-kit's eyes and ears were sealed shut, and her nose could only catch faint scents, one of them being milk. The kit began to squirm helplessly, letting out tiny mewls, trying to find where the tantalizing smell was coming from.  The she-kit's wet fur clung to her skin, and she began to shiver as a crisp leaf-bare wind swept in through the nursery entrance.  The breeze blew away the weak scent of food, rendering the small kit completely lost.  She began to squeal.

A small white and silver kit fell to the moss, he was over welled with the smells of this new place, he started to meow loudly from being wet and cold, he was not happy and started to squirm everywhere.

The third to fall out was a tiny tabby with a white chest. She squirmed around the ground trying to find food, then began suckling.

Trying not to get in Rabbitpaw's way, he scooted over and nudged his mate's head, letting out a purr. "You're doing great, just a little longer," he meowed softly. The tom turned his gaze to the first kit. She was beautiful. Soon enough, two more kits were brought into the world and Tinylegs let out a meow of happiness. "They're wonderful," he added, giving Moodlight a lick on the shoulder, flicking his tail back and forth in nervousness and excitement.

Oceanlight rushed in. She saw beautiful kits were already born. She gave a nod of gratitude to Rabbitpaw. "Don't lick the kits, since it's Leafbare. The wetness will make them cold. she said. She used some soft leaves to clean the kits. Thankfully, the leaves weren't dead, They felt nice to touch. She smiled at them and said, "Welcome to the clan, little ones.".

The small she-kit began to squeal louder when she felt an unfamiliar texture rub against her fur; but soon she relaxed.  The wet was mostly gone from her coat, and she felt much warmer.  Sniffing the air once again, she retraced the scent of her mother's milk and crawled toward her warmth.  Finally curled in the curve of Moonlight's body, she began to suckle next to her sister.

It was an instant relief to see Oceanlight run in behind Rabbitpaw. With the look she was given, Rabbitpaw knew she had done something right. It was so nice to have that reassurance. With a smile, Rabbitpaw backed out of the way to let the real medicine cat do her job. However, she looked around the gathered cats to Moonlight. "Congratulations, Moonlight! They're... They're gorgeous!" she purred.

The tabby kitten continued suckling from hunger, ignoring the loud sounds. She shivered slightly in the wetness.

Moonlight panted and dropped the stick, which now had deep marks from her teeth. She turned to look at her newborn kits with a smile, nuzzling them softly while trying to not get in the way of the medicine cats. It was really hard for her to not lick them in an attempt to clean them like her instinct told her to do, but if Oceanlight was telling them to not do it she knew it was for a good reason.

As soon as her kits were dry and the medicine cats took a step back, she curled around her kits, purring softly before turning to look at Oceanlight and Rabbitpaw “Thank you” Her mind was foggy with exhaustion and her eyelids were growing heavy, but there was one more thing she had to do before allowing herself to fall asleep, and for that she turned to look at Tinylegs “How should we name them?”.

One of the larger kits curled around her mother tightly. Trying to shelter herself from the cold winter air as she got comfortable she let out a content meow.

Giving a nod to Oceanlight and glad the she-cat came to help, Tinylegs turned his attention back to Moonlight, happy purrs emitting from deep within his throat. Upon Moonlight's question, the small tom turned his gaze to the kits. They were all so innocent. Most of the kits had him and their mother's coloring, so thinking for a few moments on names, he decided on what he thought was best. "How about Pansykit, Cloudkit, Whitekit, and... Cloverkit?" he meowed with a smile, giving Moonlight a lick on her forehead.
