Cheating Death

Reedstar silently padded through the tall grass and reeds, ears bricked and eyes alert. It's around here somewhere... The morning seemed peaceful enough, for all his stress. One could hear the trickling of a nearby stream and the twittering of cheery birds, oblivious to the predator hiding away in the shadows. He had broken off from the main hunting patrol when he caught the scent of a fox, but the trail ended here.

The fox's stink had been too fresh and recent for his liking. Maybe I should go back for help... Foxes were sly and dangerous. It would steal their prey and, if it got bold, would steal their kits as well. Reedstar decided against fetching the patrol. More likely than not, he'd end up wasting his time on this chase when what the Clan needed most was freshkill. It's gone. he told himself. Leafbare would be upon them soon enough. He needed to head back to camp.

Just then, there a quiet rustling in the grass. Reedstar didn't dare call out as he cautiously looked around him for the source. Had it just been his imagination? Was there someone there? Something? He unsheathed his claws and got into a defensive stance, his mind running wild.

Stormpaw watched the water, following the patrol. She grunted quietly in annoyance. Either she still couldn't figure out how to spot fish without scaring them or the fish along the stream were all hiding. She couldn't seem to focus. Meanwhile her sister, Hailpaw, who's white fur stood out against the reeds like a raven on snow, seemed completely focused and occasionally lashed a paw into the water, scooping out a fish. But the fish always got away. Her problem more seemed to be actually catching the slippery prey.

However, being unfocused allowed the silver tabby to notice something else. She poked her sister with a paw, spooking a little. Hailpaw looked at her, confused.
"Where's Reedstar?" Stormpaw mewed.
