Mapleface picked her way gingerly through the boulders, casting a look behind at her brother. "Hurry up, we have rocks to explore!"

"I see absolutely no point in this. We go through this territory every day and now you want to explore? And explore rocks of all things?" Thrushstripe complained as he trudged through the rocky terrain. The solid ground was hurting his paws as he continued behind Mapleface. Why did she had to drag him out here? Yeah, border patrols were important, but they weren't right at the border. They were aimlessly wandering through the middle of the territory. With a heavy sigh, he shook his head. He didn't understand the she-cat. He didn't really think he ever would, but hey. You can't choose family.

Although, the longer he moved, the more of a strange feeling he was getting. It wasn't normal, that was for sure. It felt like something was off, but he couldn't put his paw on it. But not even a few moments later, his thoughts were confirmed. In the scarce brush of the rough terrain, something moved. He couldn't exactly figure out what it was as he tried sniffing the air only to find that they were the ones upwind. He couldn't smell it and he couldn't see it, but it moved. "Mapleface did you see that?" he asked nervously as he looked around to see if he could catch any kind of glimpse of the other animal. Was it another cat? He could chase off rogues, but what if it was a fox or a badger? He desperately hoped it wasn't a badger. He had never seen one but the stories were terrifying...

Dead Hearts Empty
PostSubject: Re: Dead Hearts   Dead Hearts EmptySun 22 Sep 2013 - 21:09

Mapleface paused and perked her ears. "No, I don-" She started, turning around. A bush quivered again, and red, snarling fox stepped out in between Mapleface and Thrushstripe. Mapleface froze, her calico fur standing up along the spine. The horrid smelling creature swung his head around from side to side, smirking and growling its foxish ways. It must have decided her brother looked more tasty because it slowly started to creep towards the tom.

She was scared. More scared then she ever have in her life. The fox was advancing, and even though her brother was strong, there was no way he would be able to take it on his own. Slowly, details started to enter the female's mind. The fox was skinny; it must have not eaten in a while. She wasn't that surprised, this area in the territory wasn't too plentiful with prey. Secondly, she noticed how close the fox was getting to Thrushstripe.

Memories of her and Thrushstripe crossed her mind. He was always the timid, but stronger one. He was there for her, yet she had treated him horribly. It took less than a heartbeat for her to decide. Time slowed as she dashed next to the fox.

It hardly moved as the fox tensed up, about to lunge forward.

Mapleface didn't even think as she bunched her legs, a few tail-lengths away from the fox's head, ready to leap.

Time moved in molasses as the fox lunged forward, as well as Mapleface. Long, sharp fox teeth met cat flesh as Mapleface dived right in its path towards Thrushstripe. However, the fox wasn't choosy. It latched its killing bite into Mapleface's soft cheek and the middle of her eye. A long, deep, and pain filled caterwaul escaped her lungs, and in surprise the fox thrashed its head to the side.

Flesh ripped away from the right side of her face as she flew through the air. Blood started to gush out of the hole where her eye used to be and from the half of her face that was now lost. However, her cry was cut short as her body collided with a rock. A large crack split through the air and she now lay motionless at the base of the rock, blood pooling everywhere.

It seemed like hours to Mapleface, but only seconds had passed.

Dead Hearts Empty
PostSubject: Re: Dead Hearts   Dead Hearts EmptySun 22 Sep 2013 - 22:05

Poor Thrushstripe didn't even have time to react. Before he knew it, the horrific animal was dashing out of the brush and lunging straight for him. All he could do was push his ears back flat on his head and watch with wide eyes has he was about to meet his doom. There was no other way around it. He couldn't outrun that attack. He'd end still being dinner. It really didn't take long for him to think this one through as the fox's jaws came closer and closer to his face. He quickly sucked in a sharp breath before another flash dove past his head. Instantly he closed his eyes, just waiting with adrenaline pumping through every vein in his body for the fox to chomp down on him. But he instantly stopped as he heard the agony of his sister then a loud crack! of her head meeting the rock. Flashing his eyes open and turning to see what had happened, he couldn't believe his eyes. There was blood everywhere, especially around the now crumpled body of Mapleface.

"No!" He yowled as soon as his eyes saw his sister. No, she couldn't be dead. Not yet. That fox couldn't have killed her... could it? It almost killed him--there was no doubt about that. Instantly fury built up inside of him. Who did this fox think it was? It had no right to be here, especially when it came to hurting Mapleface. He wasn't going to stand for it. Clenching his jaw and unsheathing his claws, he used up all of his strength to target and jump at the fox, aiming straight for its eyes. "No one messes with my sister!" he screamed furiously as the foul creature turned towards him only to get a face full of powerful claws as Thrushstripe clung to the beast's face, slashing away and biting anything he could get his claws on, and the more he clawed, the more fur and flesh he could feel ripping underneath his paws. The thing was that it he felt no shame for it. Instead, he felt empowered. There was no remorse or mercy--just pride and... what was that? Joy? He was happy he was causing this pain? Yep. No second thoughts about it.

As the fox howled in pain, it twisted and whirled around hoping to knock off Thrushstripe. It was only after a good long time that the thing finally succeeded in throwing the warrior onto the ground with a thud but instantly it took off. Thrushstripe was positive the creature was now blind and it was nearly impossible to fight what you couldn't see. Slowly getting up to his feet while trying to ignore the pounding ache in his side from how he landed on the hard ground, he stood up to see the drops of blood the fox had left behind as it fled back to its home wherever it was. Taking deep breaths until he knew it was gone for good, he quickly turned to see Mapleface still lying there lifeless it seemed next to the rock that had knocked her unconscious in the first place.

"Mapleface!" Thrushstripe shouted as he rushed to his sister's side. "Mapleface-- Oh dear Starclan..." It took everything within him not to vomit everything he had eaten earlier that day when he saw just what kind of shape the she-cat was in. The shredded flesh peeled back off of her face, the twisted jaw that didn't even look like it was even a jaw anymore, and not to mention the dark, bloody place where her right eye was supposed to be. Almost everything about her was covered blood. Thrushstripe quickly backed up as to make sure that he could address the situation before jumping into anything stupid. But Mapleface desperately needed help. As he studied her for just a second, he could see that she was still breathing, but just barely. Relief washed over him as he tried to figure out how he could help her before taking her back to camp... which as this point was devastatingly far. "Okay, Mapleface.. Just-Just hang in there. I'll help you. I swear it..." His voice trailed off as he began frantically looking around for anything that could help. Oh what was it that medicine cats used for wounds to stop bleeding? The tom had only been hurt a couple of times.. they used.. OH! Cobwebs! Without a second thought, he rushed to find all of the cobwebs he could, which wasn't a whole lot, but it was better than nothing. Quickly getting back to the young warrior, he did as best as he could to patch up her injuries before hoping she was possibly awake.

"Mapleface! Mapleface can you hear me?" He asked desperately, hoping she would at least open her eyes-- or eye in this case-- just for her to acknowledge that he was by her side.

Dead Hearts Empty
PostSubject: Re: Dead Hearts   Dead Hearts EmptyMon 23 Sep 2013 - 15:19

It was dark in Mapleface’s head. She was walking in her flat, empty world again; the same one from the dream she had received the other night. Except this time, she was running, and yowling. Hot breath billow against her back haunches, pushing her to keep running. A snarl, as well as a shriek from her sounded and she spun around. It was still bare black, except this time she saw the fox and Thrushstripe. She was so far away, and the fox kept moving towards her brother. She crouched again. The she-cat went to leap, but before she could the fox was in front of her, less than a whisker-length away from her face even though it had been several tail-lengths away heartbeats ago. They stood there, nose to nose, both of their breaths rushed and almost angry.

“Okay, Mapleface… Just-Just hang in there. I’ll help you. I swear it…” The fox yowled. This surprised Mapleface. Confused, she took a step back. She stared at the creature, confused. “Mapleface! Mapleface, can you hear me?” the fox barked again. This was strange. So strange. She took another step back, brushing up against the rock. She squeezed her eyes shut, wanting this all to fade away.

Mapleface let out a small moan. It was more like a gurgle of blood coming from her crooked jaw. She moved slightly--just a twitch of her tail-- and that felt okay. However, she flicked her ear next, and that hurt. She could vaguely feel something on her face and Thrushstripe there. She tried to talk, but only a gurgle of noises came out. Mapleface moved her back legs. Those were just fine. But her face hurt. It really, really hurt. She was so tired too. She let out another gurgle, relaxing against the rock. Her face hurt so much and she couldn’t see anything. It was still all black yet she could tell she was awake. What is wrong with me? What happened?

Dead Hearts Empty
PostSubject: Re: Dead Hearts   Dead Hearts EmptyMon 23 Sep 2013 - 16:21

"Oh, thank you, thank you..." He breathed when he saw her body move just barely. Thank Starclan she was still able to hear him. They hadn't taken her away just yet, and he was going to make sure she was going to stay here with them. "Alright it's time to get you back to camp. Mallowroot can help you. I know he can." Taking a second so see just how he should pick her up, he quickly decided that the best way was to just try to carry her on his back if at all possible. He wasn't going to drag her all the way back and it would help him walk more efficiently even with the added weight. Sighing deeply, he tried to forget the horrifying injuries she had sustained and he tried to forget about the blood pooling around her body as he carefully nudged his head underneath her. When he was sure she would be balanced enough, he quickly lifted her up, pushing her onto his back. Instantly he could feel the warmth of the blood sticking to his fur and to be completely honest, it grossed him out. But he had no time to think about that. His first priority was to get Mapleface to camp safely... to keep her alive.

"You're going to be okay," He kept repeating as he slowly began to walk out of the rocky territory and back into the long grass of the marsh. Thankfully he wouldn't have to deal with the stones digging into his pads, but with each step he couldn't help but worry about the she-cat on his back. He felt like he needed to run. He needed to run as fast as he could to get to camp in enough time, but at the same time, he knew that if he wasn't careful enough, he could very easily end up hurting her. It was awful though. Each step seemed heavier. He had never had to deal with carrying a clan mate back before and it was taking its toll. He grew slower and slower to the point that his feet were sinking in the marshy mud, the stamina he needed to walk being used up to pull his paws out. It was so difficult but soon he found the thickets that bordered the camp and guarded the entrance. Oh thank Starclan...
