Mintpaw's Assessment

Stormstar sat there humming a small tune to himself as he waited near the middle of the moor for his apprentice. Today, they were going to do the assessment.

She had been alerted that Stormstar was waiting for her in the moor. She quickly made her way out there. She saw the tall figure out towards the middle. "What's on the agenda today?" She looked at the leader with large green eyes.

Turning to face his apprentice, Stormstar smiled. "Something that is long overdue. Your assessment. Now, the rules are simple. By the time the sun-sets, I want you to have caught about four pieces of prey. I'll be following you, but don't look for me. Just focus on the hunt. When you get four pieces of prey, you can head back to camp. I'll be waiting for you there most likely."

Before her mentor was done, Mintpaw was off. Soon enough she caught the scent of mouse and pressed herself low to the ground. Her tail hovered in the air. Launching herself at the small piece of prey. Landing on it with all fours she trapped it and then picked it up with her mouth.

Before her mentor was done, Mintpaw was off. Soon enough she caught the scent of mouse and pressed herself low to the ground. Her tail hovered in the air. Launching herself at the small piece of prey. Landing on it with all fours she trapped it and then picked it up with her mouth. Burrying it quickly and then off to try and get something else. The moor spread out in front of her as she took off after an already running rabbit. Ducking behind a large patch of tail grass she hoped it would stop, and luckily it did. Jumping at it, the stupid thing moved again and kept moving. Mintpaw stuck her head up in the air and her wet nose caught so many different smells but none of which interested her to persue. Sitting in a hunter's crouch behind the patch of grass she waited. Yet another field mouse made its way into her scent range. Seeing nothing else to do or to go after she set off at a pace that carried to almost to the rodent. This mouse was far from a regular one. The small shiny black and beady eyes searched the ground for food and involenteerily looking and sniffing the air to make sure there were no predators. Thank StarClan Mintpaw was downwind of the small creature. Potruding from her hiding spot the apprentice landed awkwardly on the mouse and it ran off. Oddly enough a squirrel, probably came across the Thunderpath, came into view. Mintpaw took off after it but the roddent was lost up a tree. Although Mintpaw was infact a feline climbing wasn't in her genes.

Stormstar let out a small huff. Mintpaw was doing somewhat terrible right now, but then again, she had a lot of time to hunt. His eyes flickered to the sky. It was almost sun-high, and she had until sunset to hunt. He hopped that she would get her three pieces of prey in time, as he wanted to make her a warrior already. He pulled himself from his train of thoughts to see that Mintpaw was nowhere to be found. "Mouse-dung!" he muttered as he made his way out of the bush he was hiding in, trying to locate her. This was going to be a fun assessment.

Letting out a quiet but irritated huff, Mintpaw wasn't in the mood for any of this. She wanted to catch her pieces of prey and get done. But as StarClan would have it, that wasn't at all how it was going to be. Rolling her eyes she set off once more. Catching sight of a rabbit she hid in another tuft of grass. Her green eyes were locked onto the furry creature. Taking a deep breathe, Mintpaw pounced and landed on it with all fours cleanly, killing and burrying it she was off one more time. Wandering back towards the basically single tree in the WindClan territory she was going to attempt to climb it. As she was about to push her way up the squirrel came into view, on the ground. Diving backwards she covered herself quickly and she got in her position. Again took a deep breathe, her muscles bunched up and jumped. A small sqeuak sounded from the tree-dweller being crushed under the cat's weight. And there's number three, Mintpaw thought happily to herself. Sniffing the air to make sure there were no easy prey around, she caught the smell of yet another mouse. Tracking it, the silly little thing sat out in the open with no cover and Mintpaw killed it quickly. Gathering her prey she laid it out and took a look at it. "Thank you StarClan." Mintpaw bowed her head and began trying to figure out how to carry it all.

Stormstar let out a small huff as he came over the crest of a hill. His eyes landed on Mintpaw, and it didn't take long for him to realize that she had completed. He was about to head back to camp before glancing sideways at her. It would be hard for her to bring her prey to the camp, wouldn't it? Shrugging, the tom raced down the hill to his apprentice, his eyes shining. "Good job, Mintpaw!" he meowed, acting like he had totally seen the whole thing and hadn't lost her. "I'll help you take these to the camp. I think it is time for you to get your warrior name soon."

With two mice in her maw, she saw a cat racing down the hill. Dropping the mice a ridge of fur stood instantly as she prepared herself for the larger cat. Feeling stupid, as it was only her mentor, she settled down and nodded. When Stormstar told her that her warrior ceremony was due soon, she held back a shrill of excitement.

Letting out a small chuckle, Stormstar grabbed the rabbit and the squirrels as they were the larger pieces of prey, and flicked his tail as he turned and started to trot away, purring.

Keeping up a good pace, Mintpaw shared the almost silence of trip back to camp.
