The year was 2022. Scientists discovered glowing objects in space. They at first thought they were only passing comets, but they soon realized they were way more complicated. This was when the first one hit.
An explosion of lava and fire exploded as the "comet" hit. It flooded the streets of a small town. It burned down houses, and eventually the town needed to be evacuated. And this was only one.
Soon, hundreds started raining. Thousands. Lava flooded city after city. It would never harden, either. The atmosphere, it got warmer and warmer. The lava stayed lava, and more people died. More places burned.
A group of people from Hartford, Connecticut, soon saw dozens heading for their city. But instead of waiting for certain death, they did something about it. They build bunkers, able to withstand extreme heat, underground, and took shelter in them. They had put these bunkers away from Hartford, in a wood called Ender's Forest, in hopes of getting more time. They did. They had finished the bunker 10 hours before the heated comets struck the city. Everyone who stayed behind died.
They were not gotten by the rescue team. Anywhere not covered in lava was not a valid landing area. When they did make landing areas, everyone was gone. They had gone to the Protection Agency of America. It was a tall building able to withstand this type of stuff. The survivors in the forest were alone.
The farmers planted crops in the underground bunker. They rounded up the few surviving animals and bred them. Trees were planted so that oxygen wouldn't run out. Shops. Huts. Houses. The community in the large underground cave system grew and grew and grew. They mined. They prospered. They built to keep alive.
The soldiers, or the UPA (Underground Protection Agency), were assigned as the police of the place. Soon, they nicknamed the massive bunker Eden, as a sarcastic dubbing of "paradise". Soon, bridges were built up to the surface. That was the first glimpse they saw of the world. It was a wasteland, full of lava, fire, and death. Skeletal figures sat on dry patches. Dead trees stood slanted in pools of seering lava. It was horrible.
Without knowledge if anyone else even existed, they continued to thrive. They continued to live.
It has been a year since the incident. Welcome to the community of Eden.
