Hunting Time for Sagepaw!

Shadowstar, after thinking over what she was going to do with Sagepaw now that Greyfeather couldn't exactly train him due to her kits, padded out of her den and I to the warm morning air. Taking a nice deep breath, she made her way to the apprentice's den. "Sagepaw!" She called. "Rise and shine."

Sagepaw near jumped out of the den, his excitement for his training actually showing, which may or may not have been because it was to be taken over by his favorite warrior. "Yes, Shadowstar!" He shouted happily, a smile on his face, he landed in front of the black she-cat.

Seeing the exhilarated apprentice suddenly made the leader smile and only share in his excitement. "Today, you will be learning how to hunt! Are you up for the challenge?"

Sagepaw gave a short nod and sat down patiently, a clear smile on his face.

"Well then let's go!" She mewed as she darted put through the entrance of the camp towards the middle of the territory. "See if you can keep up!"

Sagepaw jumped on his feet and ran to his mentor's side, though found it difficult to keep up with her long strides with his small body, but he managed with quicker pace. "Where- ... are- ... we going?" he asked in-between breathes, though he wasn't tired or wheezing, he just was trying to concentraite. (I cannot spell today Dx)

Shadowstar finally stopped in the middle of the territory where the marshy grass grew the tallest. "We are stopping right here. The tall grass is dangerous without a pokemon can be used to conceal yourself better so that your prey won't spot you or smell you as easily as if you were in open territory," She mewed to her apprentice softly.

Sagepaw tried to peek are her from over the tall grass, "But then wouldn't it be hard for to us to find the prey too?" He questioned and padded around, going to the edge of the grass and peering down into some of the marsh's ponds. He leaned down close to inspect it, seeing small shapes swimming in the water.
His green eyes suddenly grew huge in amazement and curiosity. "Shadowstar! Come look!" He gasped, calling to his mentor. "There are little fish in the water - except they have heads. And some have little legs, like frogs! They're so tiny...!" Sagepaw bent down to get closer, digging his paws into the damp mud and roots to get a closer look. He had mistakenly gotten to close and his nose touched the water, sending a ripple through the water and scaring a lot of the strange creatures away.
"Aw.." He said in mild disappointment.

Shadowstar laughed at Sagepaw's curiousness. "Those will grow to be frogs," she mewed as she padded to the puddle to watch them swim away. "But getting back on the subject, in order to find our prey, we use our noses. Our sense of smell is stronger than theirs so that we can spot them before they spot us."

Sagepaw stood back up and turned around to face the leader, his mind trying to figure out how little fish turned into frogs, but he quickly pushed the thought away and saved it for later. He nodded and took in a deep breathe, opening his mouth so he could get a stronger scent. "I think there's a frog over there... A big one." He whispered, as if they had to be sneaky all of a sudden. He pointed with his tail to an area in the tall grass behind Shadowstar.

"Okay, well let's find out," she mewed in a hushed tone as she dropped into a hunting crouch. "First lesson: the crouch. Now you want to always be light on your feet; keep your weight up, but you want to be low in the grass. This keeps you unseen and unheard therefore your prey won't know you are coming. Next you want to make sure that you are downwind so that the breeze doesn't carry your scent to where your prey can smell it." Thankfully, just at that moment, a small breeze blew right into their face, proving that they were lucky enough to already be downwind.

Sagepaw nodded and paused a moment to check the wind. "So... The wind is blowing twords us.. So that means that the scent of the frog is coming our way, but our scent is blowing the other way... right?" He really didn't expect an answer. He had simply figured the whole thing out aloud quietly to make sure he'd remember it.
The apprentice then got down, keeping his belly a bit away from the ground and standing on the tips of his toes. His tail was lashing in excitement. "Like this?"

Shadowstar studied the apprentice quietly before giving him a nod of approval. "Perfect," she replied. "Now we quietly crawl towards the frog." She slowly took on small step through the grass, hardly making any noise at all. "Like this," she told him.

Sagepaw nodded and crept forward in a stalk, trying not to freak out when his paw sunk into the mud mistakenly, but quickly regained himself. He smiled and looked up to Shadowstar, but said nothing.

The leader looked back at Sagepaw, quite proud of his accomplishments today. "You're sling great," she said with happiness in the tone of her voice. "Now, the last thing you need to do is get close enough to the frog, and when you think you can reach it in one bound, you pounce and kill it, usually with a quick bite or a blow to the head."
