24 Hours

By WCC Admin, Rain

24 Hours ~ Written by Rain O7n2iu

In the middle of the United States, a mansion stands, placed strategically five miles from any other civilization. It was built for the purpose of game shows, competitions, large sleepovers, or anything any business or other parties were willing to pay for. Two administrators of a small site have decided to invite their members for a 24 hour lock-in. However, when something goes wrong, their patience for each other may be put to the test. . .

~Prologue~

The Set-Up

A dust cloud trailed a blue Ford Fiesta as it drove down a gravel road. The road wound through some fields, which soon gave way to a thin forest. As it went deeper, the trees got thicker. In her car, the driver slowed down, peering up out of the windshield, attempting to see further down the road. What she was looking for became evident as the trees suddenly receded, revealing a large house. The girl shrunk back, looking skeptical.

She slowed to a stop just beside the house, and turned the vehicle off. Still looking as if she were having second thoughts, she climbed out and shut the door behind her. The girl walked around the back of her car, opening the trunk to take out a duffel bag. She slung it over her shoulder, then closed and locked the car.

Her brown hair, drawn up in a ponytail, swung as she walked carefully to the front door. She hesitated, glancing around her. It did not seem right, but perhaps she was wrong. Finally, she knocked. She was not left waiting long; the door was thrown open by a teenage boy.

“Chi!” he cried out, a smile splitting his face.
“Hey Kisa,” she greeted, a similar smile on her face.

The boy gestured for her to enter, which she did. Kisa shut the door behind her. They hugged briefly, then turned to see the lobby.

It was nothing super fancy, but it had been modernized and updated. Directly to their left, hanging on the wall, was a portrait of a beautiful wheat field, the sun setting behind it. Ahead of them, a staircase led to the next floor, running up the wall. A closet was sunk into the wall underneath the stairs. A wide doorway opposite the staircase suggested more rooms were in that direction, as well as another wide doorway in front of them.

“Wow,” breathed Chi. “I’ve always wanted to visit a place like this.”
“Isn’t it cool?” Kisa said, grinning. “I already have most things set up, but I still need to figure out a few of the activities. Also, we need to order a lot of pizza.”
“Alright,” Chi agreed. “Anything else I should know?”
“Oh!” Kisa exclaimed, moving into the room opposite the stairs. He strode over to the coffee table, grabbed a stack of something, and approached Chi in the doorway. “Look, name tags. Just so we don’t get confused.” He handed her one that read, ‘Hello! My name is: Rain.’ Kisa already wore one that said the same sentence, but with the name ‘Jay’ in place of Rain.
“That’s smart,” Rain chuckled. She peeled the sticker off then placed it on her shirt. She looked up and smiled. “Let’s get this party started!”

~*~*

Five hours later, everything was ready. Rain and Jay had spent the majority of the day running around the house, walkie-talkies in hand, telling each other what had been done and reminding the other what was still to be done. They now sat outside on the couple of steps leading to the front door. They chatted, waiting for something to come down the dirt road. Finally, it did. It was a yellow school bus, regular sized, with about half of it filled.

The two stood up, dusted off their hands, and waited.
“Here we go,” Rain murmured.
“We can do it,” Jay muttered.

And so it began.

~Chapter 1~

We Can Survive, Right?

The big yellow bus slowed to a screeching halt at the front of the house. It rumbled in place as the driver spun the lever, opening the doors. All of the passengers got to their feet and formed a line, stepping off the vehicle one by one onto the dusty gravel. Rain and Jay stood in wait for them, smiling at all of the other people.

Once the last person had left the bus, the doors were pulled shut and the automobile roared back to life. The driver turned it around and headed back down the driveway, leaving the group standing in silence. The teens and tweens all stared at the two in front of them. Finally, the older spoke.

“Hello, members of WCC, and welcome!” Rain greeted, a smile on her face. “Jay and I are so glad all of you could make it. As for those who couldn’t, we’ll just have to go back and make them jealous they chose not to come.” She paused, glancing over at Jay. The boy began speaking to the crowd.

“The schedule is as follows,” he started. “At exactly five o’ clock, we will push the buttons to lock us in. Nobody will leave, nobody will come. Rain and I have planned several activities for the twenty-four hours we’ll all be here, and we have plenty of food to last us the day. Any questions so far?”

They were greeted with silence. Rain played with her fingers in anxiety, scanning the crowd for any faces showing doubt. When nothing happened, Rain clapped her hands together, and took half a step backwards.

“Alright, we’ll take you into the mansion now,” Rain told them. With that, she and Jay led the group towards the front door. Under her breath, the girl said, “I hope they’re not like this the whole time.” Hearing her, Jay replied, “They shouldn’t be. They all chose to come to this thing.” Rain snorted at this.

They had reached the front door. Jay held the door open as Rain took the others into the small living room area across from the stairs where the name tags sat. Once Jay had rejoined them, Rain started to speak again.

“This is the main living room,” Rain informed the group. “If there are any emergencies, or we need to regroup, we will send you guys here. There are a few other large rooms that look like this one, but this is the only one with stairs outside the door, or a view of the front yard.”

“We have name tags on the coffee table,” Jay continued for her. “All you have to do is write your username, or what people know you by on the site, in the white box. Like mine says Jay, and hers says Rain. We’ll give you a moment to do that.”

The room was filled with noise as each person rushed for a Sharpie and name tag. The activity took nearly five minutes with only two Sharpies. After it was over, the room fell silent once more. It was starting to get a little awkward; the two administrators had assumed people would be chatting already by that point. Rain bit her lip as Jay spoke once more.

“Since it’s only about four thirty, you guys can all go exploring,” Jay said. “We expect you to be in the kitchen by five thirty, which gives you an hour. Hopefully, you’ll have found the kitchen by then. Otherwise, Rain will be waiting here for anybody who has gotten lost. Any questions?” He was met with silence, and so said, “Alright, go ahead. One hour!”

The group dispersed quickly, and within a few minutes, the two were alone again. Rain collapsed in the armchair, covering her eyes with her hands.

“If this keeps up, this will be the worst waste of money ever,” she groaned, her voice muffled.

Jay sat on the edge of the coffee table.
“I’m hoping they’ll start talking to one another after this,” he told her. “They might run into each other, see the other’s name, and get excited. Who knows, anything could happen.”

“I hope that didn’t jinx it,” Rain chuckled, moving her hands away from her face.

On the west wing of the house, Sleepy strolled down the hallways, peeking into every room he passed. Not paying much attention to where he was going, he rounded a corner and bumped into somebody a few inches taller than himself. He and the other person stumbled back a couple of steps. Sleepy looked up, and immediately wanted out of that hallway.

“Hello, Sleepy,” said the girl who he had run into.

“Hello, Hope,” he replied.

“How are you liking the mansion?” she asked.

“It’s old, could use some fixing up, but it’s fine,” he answered, then fell silent. The two stood there quietly before Hope finally breathed, “Well, I guess we should keep going. See you later.” She stepped around Sleepy and disappeared. Sleepy kept going, not taking a look back.

~*~*~*

A floor above them, Shadow and Frost walked the hallways together. They laughed at the old-fashioned rooms, and made fun of the more modern ones with ridiculous décor. As they walked down a hallway, an older teenage boy was headed towards them. Both girls stopped, watching the stranger approach. Finally, he froze, a couple of feet from the pair.

“Hello,” he smiled. He leaned forward to read their name tags. “Shadow! Frost!”

At almost the same time, the girls cried out, “Snake!” They all laughed, and began talking. After a couple of minutes, Snake invited them to explore with him, to which they agreed.

~*~*~*

For the next hour, the members wandered around, creaking open doors, tiptoeing down stairs, and generally getting to know the mansion. Jay organized paper plates and cups in the kitchen in preparation for dinner and snacking. He had activated the security system the moment the clock read five. Rain sat on the armchair in the main living room, her legs pulled up on the seat with her while she dozed.

She was awoken abruptly at five thirty by a couple of people standing in the doorway looking awkward. Rubbing her eyes, the 16-year-old girl stood up.

“Has it been an hour?” Rain asked the others. They nodded silently, and she smiled. “Okay, to dinner then.” She led them down the hallway. The girl glanced back at the other name tags, and a grin broke her face. “Hello Pizza, Splotch,” she said.

The other two beamed, saying hellos to her as well.

Rain led them through the wide doorway, which took them into a larger room. A fireplace was on the wall opposite the door, while a normal-sized door (closed) stood sentry on the left wall. A piano sat to their immediate right, a bookshelf right next to it. However, there was no right wall. Instead, it was open from floor to ceiling, leading to a beautifully built kitchen.

Grey marble countertops matched nicely with near-black cupboards. A stainless steel sink was placed underneath a small window. An island stood in the center of the ring of counter, piled with snack foods. Pizza, chips, brownies, fries, dips, a vegetable platter, and many other snacks cluttered the surface. People already stood by like hungry wolves, clutching plates. Most of them hadn’t eaten since that morning, when the bus had picked them up.

Seeing Rain was in the kitchen, Jay turned to the group.
“Before you start eating, we have some rules to lay down,” he instructed. “We have a lot of food, yes, but we don’t have enough for you all to continuously eat all night. Be slow, allow others who haven’t had food yet to get food before you go back for seconds, etcetera, etcetera. Are we clear?”

Eagerly, people nodded or muttered a, “Yes.” Rain stepped forward to add, “Anything bad that happens here will affect you on WCC. Watch your behavior, please, though I trust most of you.” Seeming to be more irritated now, the group agreed quickly.

“Okay, you can eat now,” Jay said. He leapt back as people rushed for the food they wanted. He and Rain stood by, watching the group slowly pile snacks on their plates.

“Hopefully, the rest of the night will go smoothly,” Jay whispered. Rain nodded in agreement.

“We just have a lot of random games to get through,” she reminded him. He laughed.

“At least they don’t seem to be shy,” he said after a moment. “That will make the games more fun.”

“Yes,” Rain agreed. “For now, let’s just focus on the task at hand.”

Chapter 2

The Beginning of a Storm

By a quarter after six, people were generally finished eating, and stood around talking, laughing, and finally getting along. A few rooms over, Jay was placing a movie in the disc player, preparing for the next ‘activity.’ Rain noticed how most of the food was gone, but pushed that from her mind; they had more in a secret pantry. She watched everybody, waiting for the signal from Jay.

Finally, her radio beeped softly, and she cleared her throat, hoping to catch the group’s attention the first time. When nobody looked, Rain cleared her throat louder, and a few people noticed. They stared at her expectantly, but others were still talking. Exerting more energy than needed, Rain coughed harshly, making a sound that made everybody flinch and look at her. The girl winced, rubbing her throat slightly with her hand.

“Sorry,” she whispered hoarsely. Raising her voice to a near-average volume, she told them, “We’re going to go watch a movie now. Anybody who makes it to the room first wins chatbox moderator for a week.”

There was a loud clatter as each member jumped up and raced out, some going the wrong way, others going the right way. Rain followed them, still rubbing her throat softly and occasionally coughing gently. When she entered the room with a large television, she had to laugh.

Jay stood in the front, remote in hand, staring wide-eyed at all the people who had suddenly appeared in the room. Enough couches and chairs surrounded the flat-screen to fit everybody comfortably, and with some space left. People were attempting to claim that they had been the first to have a seat. Rain crossed to the front and asked Jay, “Who came in first?”

His reply was to give her a weird look, but he answered, “I saw Sleepy first.”

A cry of “Ha! I told all of you!” broke the silence. Rain looked over to see Sleepy wearing a triumphant grin before suddenly, it disappeared and he became nonreactive once more.

“Chatbox moderator for a week,” Rain informed the boy. “And with that, you get the right the abuse it, since it’s only a week. Only for kicking, though, please don’t ban people without proper reason.” Sleepy nodded, barely concealing a smile.

Jay continued to look on in semi-confused silence, but when Rain and the others turned to him expectantly, he reverted to host state.

“For your viewing pleasure this evening, we have a couple of movies ready,” he announced. “The first movie of tonight will be a little number called ‘Date Night.’ No, it is not a chick flick. I hope you enjoy it. Otherwise, you are free to roam the mansion or chat quietly in a different room. Thank you.” As he stepped away, Jay pressed a button on the remote, starting the movie.

The opening scene came onto the screen, and a hush fell over the group as the surround sound kicked in. Soon, most of them were engaged in the movie, and the admins settled down on a two-seater couch placed to the side of the circle.

~*~*~*

An hour and a half later, the movie ended, everybody making jokes about the way it finished. Rain had fallen asleep, curled up tightly on the end of the small couch. Jay stared at the screen, apparently not realizing it was over. Soon, however, the volume got to a point where he snapped out of it and stood up, stretching out his arms.

“What are we doing next?” asked Pine, an innocent smile on her face.

The teenage boy looked over at Rain, who was still not awake, and shrugged at Pine.
“She was in charge of it, but I don’t want to wake her up,” he said. “I think we were going to play some board game like Life.”

“Oh, that sounds fun!” piped up Splotch. “I call being the green car!”

People began calling out colors that they wanted to be. Jay tried getting their attention, and finally yelled, “Hey!” before anybody looked back to him.
“We’ll need to split into teams,” he informed the group. “There are only about seven colors, and we have around fifteen people. Everybody pick a partner so we can get started.”

Again, a clamor filled the room. Rain stirred and blinked slowly awake. Within a couple of minutes, each person had a partner. The pairs were Sleepy and Ebony, Pine and Snake, Moss and Badger, Hope and May, and Splotch and Dew. Jay nodded, turning to get the board game from behind him. He set it on the floor, opened the box, and began pulling out the pieces. Soon, each person was grabbing what they could to put the board together correctly.

After a much shorter time than it normally took, everybody sat in a tight circle around the board, all of the cars piled up at the starting point. The number wheel lay in the middle, waiting for somebody to spin it.

“You guys can go in order from oldest to youngest,” Jay said, sitting on the couch just behind the group. “And try to keep the game as clean as possible.”

There was a collective laugh as the first group went. Ebony and Sleepy advanced six spaces on the college path. Within a matter of minutes, the game was rolling, and everybody was watching, anticipating what would come next.

~*~*~*

An hour later, the group was in an uproar, yelling things at their partners and at the other players. Three cars were within five spaces of the finish, and the members seemed to have forgotten that the way to win was by how much money they ended with. Jay and Rain leaned over the group, trying to see the board over peoples’ heads.

A general hush fell over the circle. Pine spun the wheel, and everybody seemed to hold their breath as it slowed, the numbers going by in a blur. The girl and Snake egged it on silently, begging for a number greater than three. Finally, it stopped, and the pair groaned while everybody else laughed. It had landed on 1.

Within the next ten minutes, every group had finished, and each was counting up their profit. In the end, each group stated what they had received. Coming in last were May and Hope with barely one hundred thousand dollars. In first place was Sleepy and Ebony, with over two million and a half.

“That was intense,” blinked Rain, her smile growing larger.

“Yeah,” Jay agreed. He opened his mouth to keep talking, but a large boom sounded, and sudden darkness enveloped the room. Before they could react, the lights came back on, leaving people in a stunned silence. Rain glanced over at Jay, her hazel eyes wide.

“What if the power goes out permanently?” whispered May loudly. Nobody said anything; they all looked instead to the administrators. Jay coughed weakly, and then told them, “We can just start another movie. If it does go out, there isn’t anything we can do about it.”

He and Rain knew something else bad about the power going out, but neither said a word about it. Instead, they put in another movie, hoping for the best.
